PART 2: THE DAUGHTER THEY SACRIFICED

Adrian Carter stared at me as if I had just spoken in another language.

“You want to go back to school?”

“Yes.”

His gaze dropped to the baby.

“And you’re saying he’s mine.”

“I’m saying my sister says he is.”

That made his expression harden.

“Your sister’s name?”

“Olivia Bennett.”

For the first time, Adrian reacted.

Barely.

But I saw it.

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re Olivia’s sister?”

“Yes.”

He turned toward one of the men behind him.

“Call Dr. Harris. Arrange a paternity test.”

Then he looked at me.

“You’ll stay until we have the result.”

I immediately shook my head.

“No.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“I didn’t come here to move from one family that gives me orders into another.”

The security guards looked horrified.

Apparently, people didn’t speak to Adrian Carter that way.

But something surprising happened.

He smiled.

Only slightly.

“Fine.”

He gave me a card.

“Stay at the Carter residence tonight. Tomorrow, after the test, you can decide what to do.”

“I don’t need your house.”

“You’re eighteen, carrying a newborn, with one backpack.”

He glanced at my worn shoes.

“You need somewhere safe.”

That annoyed me because he was right.

Three hours later, the test was completed.

The result arrived the next morning.

Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.

Adrian read the document once.

Then again.

His face became terrifyingly calm.

“Where is Olivia?”

“Abroad.”

“Does she know you brought him here?”

“Not yet.”

My phone rang at that exact moment.

Mom.

Twenty-eight missed calls.

I answered.

Her scream nearly broke the speaker.

“EMILY! WHERE DID YOU TAKE THE BABY?”

“To his father.”

Silence.

Then:

“What?”

“You heard me.”

My mother’s voice dropped.

“Come home immediately.”

“No.”

“Your sister’s reputation will be destroyed!”

I looked at Adrian.

He could hear every word.

“Then Olivia should have thought about that before having a child and leaving him behind.”

“You ungrateful girl!”

Adrian held out his hand.

“Give me the phone.”

I hesitated.

Then handed it over.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

My mother became silent instantly.

Adrian’s voice was emotionless.

“My name is Adrian Carter.”

I could almost imagine her face.

He continued:

“The child is mine.”

A long pause.

Then my mother’s tone transformed completely.

“Mr. Carter, this is actually a misunderstanding…”

“No.”

His eyes became colder.

“What I don’t understand is why my son was being forced onto an eighteen-year-old girl while his mother left the country.”

My mother tried to laugh.

“Emily exaggerates.”

I stared at the phone.

Of course.

Even now.

Adrian asked:

“Did you tell her to leave school?”

Silence.

“Did you intend to register my son as Emily’s?”

More silence.

Adrian ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

“Pack your things.”

My heart tightened.

“Why?”

“Because you’re going back to school.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“You said that was what you wanted.”

“But—”

“And my son will stay with me.”

I didn’t know what to say.

For years, whenever I asked my parents for something, there was always a condition.

Olivia first.

Money first.

Family reputation first.

Adrian simply said:

“You asked. Fine.”

That afternoon, he arranged temporary housing near my school and contacted the administration.

I had expected humiliation.

Instead, I discovered something else.

My grades were not nearly as bad as my mother claimed.

My counselor looked confused when I requested my academic records.

“Emily, you’re ranked in the upper third of your class.”

I froze.

“What?”

“You also qualified for two local scholarship programs.”

I thought she was mistaken.

My mother had repeated for years that university would be wasted on me.

That Olivia was the intelligent one.

That I should learn practical skills instead.

The counselor opened another file.

“You never submitted the scholarship applications.”

“I never saw them.”

Her expression changed.

“They were mailed to your home.”

Something inside me went cold.

That night, I confronted my mother.

This time, Adrian’s lawyer was present.

“Where are my scholarship letters?”

Mom avoided my eyes.

My father finally snapped.

“We didn’t think you would get them.”

“They said I qualified.”

“Your sister needed money for overseas preparation.”

I stared at him.

“You used my education fund for Olivia?”

Nobody answered.

That was my answer.

Then the apartment door burst open.

Olivia had returned.

She stood there dragging two suitcases, still wearing expensive clothes from abroad.

The moment she saw Adrian, her face went white.

“Adrian…”

He didn’t move.

She immediately started crying.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I was scared.”

“You left our son.”

“I had school!”

“And Emily didn’t?”

Olivia looked at me with pure hatred.

“You brought him here?”

“Yes.”

“You ruined everything!”

I almost laughed.

“No. I stopped letting you ruin everything for me.”

She lunged toward me, but my father grabbed her arm.

Then Olivia screamed something that silenced the entire room.

“You think Adrian will protect you after he learns why I had the baby?”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Olivia began laughing through her tears.

“You really don’t know?”

She looked at me.

Then at our mother.

“Tell him.”

Mom went pale.

“Olivia, shut up.”

Too late.

Olivia pointed at me.

“Mom knew who Adrian was from the beginning.”

I stopped breathing.

My mother whispered:

“Please…”

Olivia continued.

“When I got pregnant, she wanted me to keep the baby because the Carter family would pay.”

Adrian’s eyes became icy.

“But when you refused to answer my calls, Mom changed the plan.”

My stomach turned.

“What plan?”

Olivia smiled bitterly.

“To make Emily raise him until the Carter family discovered the truth.”

I stared at my mother.

She had not asked me to sacrifice myself only to protect Olivia.

She had planned to use me as bait.

Adrian’s lawyer immediately began taking notes.

My father sat down heavily.

“I didn’t know.”

Mom started crying.

“I did everything for this family.”

I finally understood something.

That sentence had controlled me my entire life.

Everything for the family.

Which always meant everything for Olivia.

Never for me.

I picked up my backpack.

My mother panicked.

“Emily, where are you going?”

“Home.”

“This is your home!”

I shook my head.

“No.”

For the first time, the word didn’t hurt.

Months later, Olivia withdrew from the university abroad and entered a custody agreement with Adrian. She was allowed to see her son, but she could no longer treat motherhood like luggage she could leave behind whenever it became inconvenient.

My parents repaid part of the money taken from my education fund after Adrian’s legal team uncovered financial records.

I refused to move back.

I enrolled in university that autumn.

On my first day, Adrian came with the baby.

He was already learning to stand, holding Adrian’s fingers with both tiny hands.

Adrian handed me an envelope.

Inside was a scholarship confirmation.

I frowned.

“Did you arrange this?”

“No.”

He almost looked offended.

“You earned it.”

My eyes burned.

Nobody had ever said those words to me before.

The baby reached toward me.

I picked him up.

Adrian asked quietly:

“Do you regret bringing him to me?”

I looked at the child.

Then at the university building behind us.

“No.”

Because the day my mother tried to force another person’s life into my arms, I finally learned to protect my own.

Olivia had always been called the daughter with a future.

I had been called the daughter who could be sacrificed.

They were wrong.

I had a future too.

I simply had to stop asking my family for permission to have one.
