Part 2: THE MAN WHO PRETENDED TO BE MY HUSBAND HAD JUST ASKED ME FOR FIVE BILLION DOLLARS

Daniel came home at eight twenty that night.

I heard his car stop in front of the house, then the front door opening, followed by his confident footsteps crossing the foyer.

I was still sitting at the dining table.

I hadn’t turned on all the lights.

Only the lamp above us was glowing.

In front of me were three things:

the box containing the bracelet he had bought me,

a closed folder,

and a glass of wine I hadn’t touched.

“Bella?”

Daniel appeared with a smile.

For one moment, I looked at him as though he were a stranger.

Maybe because, finally, he was.

He walked over and placed the jewelry box in front of me.

“I told you I’d make it up to you for being away.”

Then he leaned down to kiss me.

I turned my face slightly away.

His lips brushed my cheek instead.

Daniel paused.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

I opened the box.

Inside was a diamond bracelet.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Exactly the kind of gift Daniel always gave me after disappearing for several days.

Before, I would have thought it was love.

Now I only saw it as an investment meant to keep the woman he believed he controlled satisfied.

“Do you like it?”

“Very much.”

His expression relaxed.

He sat across from me and poured himself some wine.

“I have good news.”

I looked at him.

“So do I.”

For a second, he seemed surprised.

“You first, or me?”

“You.”

Daniel took a sip.

“We got one last chance to save Whitmore Technologies.”

There it was.

The real reason for dinner.

“How much do you need?”

I asked so naturally that his eyes lit up.

He tried to hide it.

“I didn’t want to talk about money the moment I got home.”

A lie.

Daniel had probably been preparing this conversation for years.

“We’re partners,” he continued. “What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine.”

The irony almost made me laugh.

“Of course.”

Daniel took my hand.

“We need liquidity for a few months. Once the company recovers, I’ll pay you back.”

“How much?”

He hesitated for barely a second.

“Five billion.”

I didn’t look away.

Five billion dollars.

My father had not even been dead for a year.

And Daniel had already decided what to do with one-third of his legacy.

“That’s a lot of money.”

“I know.”

He squeezed my fingers gently.

“But I’m not asking a stranger. I’m asking my wife.

Wife.

That word sounded almost obscene now.

I slowly withdrew my hand.

“What if I told you I discovered something about my inheritance today?”

Daniel tensed.

Only slightly.

Anyone else might not have noticed.

I did.

“What did you discover?”

“My father left a special clause.”

I watched his fingers tighten around the wineglass.

“What clause?”

I smiled.

“Daniel, you look nervous.”

“I’m not nervous.”

Too fast.

And suddenly I understood something.

He already knew that clause existed.

My father had stated that the fortune would be shared between me and my legal spouse.

Daniel knew the terms of the will.

That was why he needed a fake wedding with me.

And a real marriage with Emily.

But I still didn’t understand why.

“My lawyer says the inheritance has already been released,” I said.

Daniel seemed to breathe easier.

“That’s fantastic.”

“All fifteen billion.”

His smile vanished for a fraction of a second.

“All fifteen?”

“I thought some of the assets would take months to clear.”

That answer confirmed my suspicions.

He knew far too much.

“It happened faster than expected.”

Daniel stood and walked around the table.

He placed his hands on my shoulders.

“Bella, this changes everything.”

I looked at him.

“For whom?”

He laughed.

“For us.”

Then he pulled out his phone.

“We can make the transfer tomorrow. I’ll prepare the finance team tonight.”

He didn’t even ask whether I agreed.

Six years.

That was what I had been to Daniel Whitmore.

A bank account that had not matured yet.

“There’s something else,” I said.

Daniel put his phone away.

“What?”

I pushed the folder toward him.

For the first time since arriving home, his smile disappeared completely.

He didn’t open it.

He only stared at it.

“What is that?”

“Open it.”

“Bella…”

“Open it.”

His eyes rose to mine.

For one second, I saw the real Daniel.

Not the loving husband.

Not my childhood friend.

Not the boy who had stood in the rain for me when we were thirteen.

I saw a man calculating risk.

Finally, he opened the folder.

The first page wasn’t the lawsuit.

I had decided to save that surprise.

It was simply a certified copy proving that our supposed marriage had never been legally registered.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Silence.

Then he turned the page.

A certified copy of the marriage certificate between Daniel Whitmore and Emily Carter.

Date:

three days after our wedding.

All the color drained from his face.

“Bella…”

“Yes?”

“I can explain.”

I laughed.

I couldn’t help it.

“I’ve apparently been waiting six years for an explanation without even knowing it.”

Daniel closed the folder.

“This isn’t what it looks like.”

“Then tell me what it looks like.”

He stood.

“Emily and I had to get married for legal reasons.”

“How romantic.”

“It wasn’t romantic!”

His voice rose for the first time.

And that was when I realized he was truly afraid.

“It was a business decision,” he said. “There were shares, trusts, family agreements… You wouldn’t understand.”

I remained still.

“Try me.”

Daniel walked toward the window.

“My father was ill. There was a condition involving control of Whitmore Technologies. I needed to be legally married to someone approved by the family board.”

“And Emily was approved?”

He didn’t answer.

“And I wasn’t?”

Silence.

That hurt more than I expected.

Daniel turned back toward me.

“I chose you.”

“No. You organized a ceremony for me.”

My voice remained calm.

You gave her the marriage.

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“Bella, none of this changes our life.”

“It changes everything.”

“No!”

He slammed his palm against the table.

The wineglass shook.

“You’re the woman I live with. You’re the one my family knows. You’re the one everyone recognizes as Mrs. Whitmore.”

I stared at him.

“But Emily is your wife.”

He couldn’t deny it.

Then I asked:

“Did you sleep with her?”

Daniel went pale.

I didn’t need to hear the answer.

I had seen enough at the airport.

“Bella…”

I stood.

“This conversation is over.”

I started toward the stairs.

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

Not violently.

Desperately.

“Wait.”

I pulled free.

“Don’t ever touch me again.”

Something changed in his expression.

“Did you already receive the money?”

There it was again.

Not, “Are you leaving me?”

Not, “Do you still love me?”

The money.

“Yes.”

“What account is it in?”

I stared at him for several seconds.

“One you don’t have access to.”

Daniel took a step back.

And then something happened that I didn’t expect.

He immediately pulled out his phone.

He typed a message.

“Who are you texting?”

“No one.”

He put the phone away.

Too late.

I had seen the name on the screen.

Emily.

Thirty seconds later, my own phone vibrated.

It was my lawyer.

I opened the message.

“Isabella, don’t sign anything. We just discovered something serious about Whitmore Technologies.”

Another message appeared beneath it.

“Your father investigated Daniel before he died.”

My heart seemed to stop.

Then came a third message.

A photograph.

My father was entering a hotel six months before his death.

Emily Carter stood in front of him.

But Emily wasn’t the terrifying part.

It was the man standing beside her.

I recognized him immediately.

He was the lawyer who had arranged my fake wedding six years ago.

My phone vibrated one final time.

“Isabella, your father left a recording about Daniel. I just listened to the first thirty seconds.”

Then another sentence appeared.

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Your fake marriage was not the beginning of the plan.”

“Daniel Whitmore had been preparing it long before he ever met you.”
