PARTE 2: THEY CALLED MY SON TRASH UNTIL THE FAMILY SEARCHING FOR HIM ARRIVED FROM BEIJING

The warning appeared again the next morning.

【Do not go near the factory on Thursday afternoon.】

【Zhao Gang approved the defective batch to meet his production target.】

【The inspection records are still in warehouse three.】

I stared at the words.

I could have ignored them.

Zhao Gang had thrown me away.

Why should I save his career?

But hundreds of workers had done nothing to me.

Some of them had once shared their lunch when I couldn’t afford mine.

So I carried Chen Xing to the factory union office.

I didn’t mention floating messages.

I simply said:

—Check warehouse three before using the steel.

The supervisor frowned.

—Who told you?

—Look first.

Two hours later, inspectors arrived.

Production was stopped.

The supposedly “defective scrap” I had bought weeks earlier had only been mislabeled.

But another batch Zhao Gang had approved for production truly failed inspection.

The documents showed that he had ignored a quality warning because he wanted to meet the quarterly target before his promotion review.

No major accident happened.

But Zhao Gang’s career still ended.

He was suspended immediately.

Three days later, the factory removed him as manager.

When he saw me at the market, his face was gray.

—You reported me.

I continued chopping meat.

—I prevented people from getting hurt.

—You wanted revenge.

I finally looked up.

—If I wanted revenge, I would have stayed silent.

He had no answer.

His problems didn’t end there.

Li Mei’s child became ill a few weeks later and needed routine blood testing.

That was when the hospital discovered something inconsistent with Zhao Gang’s blood type.

He refused to believe it.

He demanded a paternity test.

The result came back negative.

The entire Zhao family went silent.

The “precious grandson” they had used to humiliate me wasn’t biologically Zhao Gang’s child.

His mother stormed into my stall the next morning.

—You knew!

I smiled.

—How could I know?

She pointed at Chen Xing.

—It’s because of that cursed child! Ever since you picked him up, our family has had bad luck!

Chen Xing immediately hid behind me.

I put down the knife.

—Say whatever you want about me.

My voice turned cold.

—But don’t insult my son.

She stared at me.

The market had gone quiet.

For years, I had lowered my head around that woman.

Not anymore.

—Your son lost his job because of his own decision.

—His marriage failed because of his own choices.

—None of that belongs to a baby you once called trash.

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

For the first time, she left without getting the final word.

My stall grew into two.

Then three.

Within four years, I had a small restaurant.

Chen Xing grew up behind the counter.

At three, he could recognize regular customers.

At five, he calculated change faster than some employees.

At seven, he announced very seriously:

—Mom, when I’m rich, you won’t cook anymore.

I laughed.

—Then who’s going to feed you?

He thought for several seconds.

—Fine. You can cook only for me.

The floating comments still appeared occasionally.

Usually ridiculous.

【Future billionaire currently stealing braised eggs from his mother’s kitchen.】

【Historic financial genius cannot solve second-grade handwriting homework.】

I learned to ignore most of them.

Until one afternoon, everything changed.

A black car stopped outside the restaurant.

Then another.

An elderly couple stepped out with a middle-aged man.

The woman’s eyes landed on Chen Xing.

The bowl in her hand fell.

—Xingchen…

Chen Xing instinctively moved behind me.

The man accompanying them showed me an old photograph.

A newborn.

Around his ankle was a tiny silver bell.

My heart stopped.

When I found Chen Xing, that same bell had been hidden inside the torn blanket around him.

The comments appeared.

【They found him.】

【The true heir of the Gu family has returned.】

The DNA results confirmed it.

Chen Xing’s biological name was Gu Xingchen.

His father had died shortly before his birth.

His mother had been seriously injured during the chaos surrounding the child’s disappearance and had spent years searching after recovering.

The people who abandoned him had been connected to a kidnapping scheme that had already been dismantled years earlier.

His grandmother cried when she held the old silver bell.

Then she looked at me.

—Thank you for saving him.

I held Chen Xing’s hand tighter.

—Are you taking him away?

The room fell silent.

Chen Xing immediately grabbed my waist.

—I’m not going!

His grandmother’s eyes filled with tears.

She crouched in front of him.

—Nobody is taking you away from your mother.

I froze.

She looked at me.

—You raised him when we couldn’t find him.

Her voice trembled.

—Biology gives us a connection.

—It doesn’t erase seven years of motherhood.

I cried then.

Not because I was losing my son.

Because for the first time, someone with enough power to take everything from me chose not to.

Chen Xing eventually moved between both families.

He gained grandparents.

A surname.

An inheritance.

But he never stopped calling me Mom.

The Gu family invested in my restaurant business only after I agreed to formal terms.

Not charity.

Investment.

I expanded slowly.

By the time Chen Xing entered university, we had dozens of restaurants across several cities.

Zhao Gang once appeared at one of them.

He had aged badly.

He looked at the name on the building.

Then at the young man stepping out of a black car beside me.

Everyone in business already knew Gu Xingchen.

The only heir to one of the country’s largest private fortunes.

Zhao Gang whispered:

—That’s the baby?

I nodded.

He laughed bitterly.

—You were lucky.

I looked at him.

—No.

I remembered the freezing collective room.

The discarded vegetables.

The baby crying beneath cardboard.

—I simply picked up someone everyone else had decided wasn’t worth saving.

Years later, at his first major shareholder meeting, Chen Xing was asked who had influenced him most.

Reporters expected the name of some investor or businessman.

He answered without hesitation:

—My mother.

Then he added:

—She taught me that value is often hidden inside what arrogant people throw away.

I watched from the back of the room and smiled.

Zhao Gang had expelled me because I couldn’t give him a son.

He never imagined that the child I found after he threw me away would one day inherit a fortune larger than anything he had ever dreamed of

But the greatest thing Chen Xing gave me was never money.

He gave me back the family I had been told I was incapable of having
