PART 2: HE CHOSE HER PREGNANCY OVER MINE—UNTIL THE TEST RESULTS DESTROYED HIS LIE

Daniel Reyes looked at the form in my hands, then at me.

“Before you sign anything, I need you to see the ultrasound.”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“I already know I’m eight weeks pregnant.”

“That isn’t what I mean.”

Something in his expression made me follow him.

Twenty minutes later, I was lying beneath a white hospital light while Daniel studied the monitor.

Then he turned the screen toward me.

I saw two small shapes.

My breath stopped.

Daniel spoke gently.

“Claire, you’re carrying twins.”

I stared at him.

“Twins?”

“Yes.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Two.

There had been two little lives inside me while Adrian stood outside Vanessa’s hospital room promising to protect their baby.

I covered my face.

Daniel immediately stepped back.

“I’m not telling you what decision to make.”

He placed the unsigned form beside me.

“But you’ve had one of the worst nights of your life. There’s no medical emergency forcing you to decide this minute.”

That sentence broke something open inside me.

For hours, everyone had been demanding decisions.

Adrian.

Vanessa.

My anger.

My humiliation.

Daniel was the first person to tell me I was allowed to stop.

So I did.

I didn’t sign.

Not because Adrian deserved another chance.

He didn’t.

I simply refused to let my husband’s betrayal make another irreversible decision for me.

I turned my phone on that afternoon.

There were sixty-three missed calls.

Adrian.

His mother.

Several hospital colleagues.

And one message from Vanessa.

Claire, I’m sorry. But Adrian and I loved each other long before you came along. Maybe some people are only meant to borrow someone else’s place for a while.

I read it twice.

Then deleted it.

My reply went to my attorney.

Proceed with the divorce.

Adrian found me that evening.

I was staying at Daniel’s sister’s apartment, because I didn’t want to return home.

Adrian stood outside the building looking as if he hadn’t slept.

“Claire.”

I didn’t invite him inside.

“Are you still pregnant?”

I looked at him.

“That is no longer information you’re entitled to.”

His face tightened.

“I’m the father.”

“You were also my husband.”

That silenced him.

“I made one mistake.”

“One?”

His eyes shifted.

That tiny movement told me everything.

I folded my arms.

“How long?”

He said nothing.

“How long have you been seeing Vanessa?”

“Since she came back.”

“A month?”

Silence.

“Adrian.”

“Five months.”

I almost laughed.

“She only came back from Paris a month ago.”

His face changed.

There it was.

Another lie.

Vanessa hadn’t “just returned.”

She had been coming back secretly for months.

Adrian looked exhausted.

“She had performances. She traveled back and forth.”

“And you traveled with her?”

He didn’t answer.

I remembered the conferences.

The emergency meetings.

The nights he supposedly slept at the office.

I felt surprisingly calm.

“Thank you.”

He frowned.

“For what?”

“For finally making this easy.”

I closed the door.

The divorce should have ended everything.

Instead, two weeks later, Vanessa came to the emergency department again.

I wasn’t treating her.

I had transferred temporarily to another unit precisely to avoid them.

But Daniel called me.

“You should probably know what happened.”

My stomach tightened.

“Is she okay?”

“She’s stable.”

“And the pregnancy?”

“Stable too.”

I exhaled.

Then Daniel added:

“But Adrian isn’t the father.”

I froze.

“What?”

Vanessa had apparently begun arguing with Adrian during an obstetric consultation.

Dates had come up.

Then another man had appeared.

Julian Laurent.

Vanessa’s former dance partner from Paris.

He hadn’t come to cause a scene.

He had come carrying prenatal documents from France.

And photographs.

And messages.

Vanessa had known Julian was the likely father before she ever returned to Adrian.

When Adrian confronted her, she finally admitted it.

She had been frightened.

Julian’s career was unstable.

Adrian was wealthy, devoted, and—most importantly—still unable to refuse her.

So she had chosen the father she preferred.

Adrian called me that night.

I answered once.

“Claire.”

His voice sounded broken.

“She lied to me.”

I stared through my apartment window.

The irony was almost unbearable.

“And?”

“The baby may not be mine.”

“And?”

Silence.

“How can you say that?”

I laughed softly.

“Because when I discovered my husband was having an affair, you told me Vanessa’s baby couldn’t handle stress.”

He stopped breathing.

“Now you’ve discovered she betrayed you, and suddenly your pain is supposed to become my emergency.”

“Claire, I made a terrible mistake.”

“No.”

I remembered my own words from weeks earlier.

“You made choices.”

He whispered:

“What about our baby?”

I closed my eyes.

“Our babies are fine.”

Silence.

Then:

“Babies?”

I almost wished I could see his face.

“Twins.”

He made a sound like he had forgotten how to breathe.

“Claire… please.”

“No.”

“I want to see them.”

“You can speak through my lawyer.”

“I’m their father.”

“And the court will protect whatever legal rights you have.”

My voice remained steady.

“But being their father does not make you my husband again.”

I ended the call.

Five months later, the divorce was final.

Vanessa returned to Paris.

Julian eventually acknowledged the child as his.

Adrian tried everything.

Flowers.

Letters.

Apologies.

He even waited outside the hospital on the day my twins were born.

I allowed him to meet them later, under arrangements made through our attorneys.

I never used the children to punish him.

But I also never allowed fatherhood to become a door back into my marriage.

That door was closed.

A year later, Adrian asked me one final time:

“If Vanessa had never returned, would we still be together?”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then shook my head.

“Probably.”

Hope briefly appeared on his face.

Until I continued.

“And that’s what frightens me.”

He stared at me.

“I would have spent my whole life loving a man I didn’t truly know.”

I picked up my children’s bag.

Vanessa hadn’t destroyed our marriage.

She had exposed it.

And that night at two in the morning, when I watched my husband carry another pregnant woman through the emergency doors, I thought I was witnessing the worst moment of my life.

I was wrong.

It was the moment the truth finally arrived.

And sometimes the truth doesn’t save your marriage.

It saves you from spending the rest of your life inside the wrong one.
