PART 2: Gabriel Thought He Had More Time… Until He Realized Emma Had Already Chosen Herself

The first thing the lawyer asked me was:

—Mrs. Fu, are you sure?

I looked at the documents in front of me.

Three years of marriage.

Three pregnancies.

Three times I had chosen him.

And now…

for the first time.

I was choosing myself.

—Yes.

My voice was calm.

—Start the divorce process.

The lawyer nodded.

Then he hesitated.

—There is something else.

I looked up.

—What?

He pushed a folder toward me.

—Regarding Sofia Jiang.

My fingers stopped.

—What about her?

He opened the file.

—Her pregnancy records.

—The estimated conception date.

—The hospital information.

I stared at the paper.

Then slowly…

my hands became cold.

Because the dates matched.

Perfectly.

Sofia’s baby was conceived when Gabriel was still telling me:

“The company is too busy.”

“I can’t come home this month.”

“Don’t pressure me about having children.”

The same period when I was sitting alone in our apartment, taking pregnancy tests, wondering if he would finally be happy.

The same period when he told me:

—Emma, let’s wait until things stabilize.

But things were never unstable for him.

Only my place in his life was.

That night, Gabriel called.

I watched his name appear on the screen.

Before…

I would answer immediately.

Even if I was angry.

Even if I was hurt.

Because I was afraid that if I didn’t pick up…

he would stop choosing me.

This time…

I let it ring.

Again.

And again.

Finally, a message arrived.

“Emma, we need to talk.”

I looked at it.

Then replied:

“Tomorrow.”

Only two words.

But Gabriel stared at them for a long time.

Because he knew.

Something had changed.

The next day, he came to the apartment.

The apartment where we had built a life.

Or at least…

where I thought we had.

He entered quietly.

His eyes immediately went toward the empty children’s room.

The room we had prepared three years ago.

The room that had never heard a baby’s cry.

He stood there for a while.

Then asked:

—You really wanted this child?

I looked at him.

The question hurt more than an accusation.

Because it meant he still didn’t know.

After everything…

he still didn’t know.

—Yes.

I answered.

—I wanted all of them.

His face changed.

—Emma…

—No.

I interrupted.

—Let me finish.

For once.

He became silent.

—Every time I got pregnant, I looked at you first.

—Not myself.

—Not the baby.

—You.

I smiled bitterly.

—Because I thought if you weren’t ready, then I had to wait.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

—That wasn’t my intention.

I nodded.

—Maybe not.

—But the result was the same.

He took a step closer.

—Sofia’s child…

I raised my hand.

Stopping him.

—I don’t want to hear about her.

That surprised him.

—Emma.

—Because this was never about Sofia.

Silence.

—You think I am leaving because another woman appeared.

I looked directly at him.

—I’m leaving because I finally understood that even when I was standing beside you…

I was still alone.

Those words hit harder than anger.

Because they were true.

Gabriel sat down.

For the first time since I knew him…

he looked lost.

Not powerful.

Not like the heir of the Fu family.

Just a man who suddenly realized he had been taking something precious for granted.

—What do you want me to do?

I almost laughed.

Because for years…

I had waited for that question.

I waited for him to ask.

But now…

it was too late.

—I wanted you to choose me before I had to leave.

He looked at me.

—Emma…

—I wanted you to protect our children before they disappeared.

—I wanted you to look at me the way you looked at her on that screen.

His expression froze.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

The tenderness.

The warmth.

The emotion.

Everything I had spent years begging for without saying it.

Three days later, the news broke.

Not about the divorce.

About Sofia.

A journalist discovered that the woman shown on the World Cup broadcast was not simply Gabriel Fu’s “old friend.”

She was the daughter of a business partner.

And the relationship between them had started long before the public knew.

The Fu family immediately went into crisis.

Because the problem wasn’t just an affair.

It was reputation.

Contracts.

Investors.

Trust.

And suddenly…

the man who had always believed he could control everything…

couldn’t control anything.

Gabriel came to find me again.

But this time…

he didn’t come with explanations.

He didn’t come with excuses.

He came tired.

—Emma.

I looked at him.

—Why are you here?

He was silent.

Then said:

—I don’t know.

That answer surprised me.

Because it was probably the first honest thing he had said in years.

—Maybe because I finally realized something.

He looked down.

—When you were with me, I always thought there would be another tomorrow.

A pause.

—Another chance.

Another conversation.

Another time to make it right.

His voice became lower.

—But you reached the point where you stopped waiting.

I said nothing.

Because he was right.

Before leaving, Gabriel asked:

—Will you let me be involved in the baby’s life?

I touched my stomach.

Then looked at him.

—If you can separate being a father from being my husband…

—yes.

His eyes reddened slightly.

—And if I want both?

I was quiet for a moment.

Then answered:

—Then you should have wanted both before.

Six months later, my son was born.

I named him Leo.

Not because of Gabriel.

Not because of the Fu family.

But because the first time I held him…

I understood something.

A child does not need a perfect story.

A child needs someone who chooses him.

Every day.

Gabriel came to the hospital.

He stood outside the room for a long time.

He didn’t enter until I nodded.

He looked at Leo.

And tears appeared in his eyes.

—He’s so small.

I smiled.

—Yes.

He reached out carefully.

Almost afraid.

—Emma…

I looked at him.

—Thank you.

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew what he meant.

Thank you for protecting him.

Thank you for not making him pay for our mistakes.

Thank you for still allowing me to be his father.

Years later, people asked me if I regretted leaving Gabriel Fu.

I always gave the same answer.

No.

Because leaving him was not the moment I lost my family.

It was the moment I stopped losing myself.

Gabriel once thought I would always wait.

That I would always forgive.

That I would always choose him.

He was wrong.

Because love can survive many things.

But it cannot survive being the only person fighting for it.

And the fourth time I became pregnant…

was the first time I finally chose my child.

And myself.
