PART 2 — The Route Where We Never Met Again

The day I signed the transfer agreement, I thought I would feel pain.

I thought I would hesitate.

After all, Adrian Shaw was not just my boyfriend.

He was my partner.

My teammate.

The person who had sat beside me through thousands of hours in the cockpit.

The man who knew every fear I had.

Every dream.

Every weakness.

But when I pressed my signature onto the paper…

I felt nothing.

Only relief.

Three days later, the company announced the new assignments.

Captain Elena Bennett — T028 Western Route.

Captain Adrian Shaw — C919 Eastern Route.

Two different skies.

Two different directions.

Two completely different futures.

The operations director looked at me carefully.

“You know you may never fly together again.”

I nodded.

“That is what I want.”

He was silent.

“You are certain?”

I looked through the office window.

The runway stretched endlessly under the morning light.

“Yes.”

“I am.”

Adrian found out through the company system.

Not from me.

Because I didn’t tell him.

For five years, he had been used to knowing everything about my life.

My schedule.

My plans.

My emotions.

He believed no matter how far he walked away…

I would still be standing there.

Waiting.

That night, he came home late.

The apartment was dark.

Only the kitchen light was on.

I was packing the last of my things.

Not leaving immediately.

Just organizing.

Adrian stopped at the door.

“What are you doing?”

I didn’t turn.

“Preparing.”

“For what?”

“The new route.”

Silence.

Then:

“You accepted?”

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

“You didn’t even discuss it with me.”

I looked at him.

A strange feeling passed through me.

Because that sentence sounded so familiar.

But it wasn’t concern.

It was surprise.

Like he couldn’t believe I had made a decision without asking permission.

“You made your decision three days ago.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What decision?”

I smiled slightly.

“The one where you chose Serena.”

The room became quiet.

For the first time, Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“That’s not what happened.”

“No?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Serena and I only talked.”

I looked at him.

“Your post said otherwise.”

His face changed.

“You misunderstood.”

I laughed softly.

“Adrian.”

“When a man publicly announces that the best person was always his ex-girlfriend…”

I paused.

“What exactly should I misunderstand?”

He had no answer.

Because for once, he couldn’t explain his way out.

The next morning, I boarded my first flight as Captain Bennett.

My own crew.

My own aircraft.

My own decisions.

When I entered the cockpit, the co-pilot smiled.

“Captain Bennett.”

I nodded.

For years, I had sat beside Adrian.

Now someone else sat beside me.

And strangely…

the sky felt bigger.

Months passed.

My career changed completely.

The T028 route became one of the company’s most successful international routes.

I became known not as Adrian Shaw’s partner.

Not as the woman beside the golden captain.

But as myself.

Captain Elena Bennett.

Meanwhile, Adrian’s world became complicated.

At first, he thought it was temporary.

He thought I would eventually return.

Then he realized something.

I wasn’t angry.

I wasn’t waiting.

I had simply moved on.

One evening, after landing in another country, I received a message.

From Adrian.

“Can we talk?”

I stared at it.

Then put my phone away.

I didn’t hate him.

That was the strange part.

I didn’t hate him anymore.

Hate meant someone still had power over your emotions.

Adrian no longer did.

A week later, we met at the airport lounge.

Not as lovers.

Not as partners.

Just two pilots who had once shared the same cockpit.

He looked tired.

Older.

Different.

“Congratulations.”

“For what?”

“The promotion.”

I nodded.

“Thank you.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“I was wrong.”

I looked at him.

About what?

He lowered his eyes.

“About thinking you would always be there.”

I said nothing.

Because that was the truth.

Not Serena.

Not the bracelet.

Not the photograph.

The biggest mistake Adrian made was believing my love had no limit.

“I thought you were angry.”

He continued.

“I thought you were trying to punish me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Then why did you leave?”

I looked at the airplanes outside the window.

“Because staying meant watching you choose someone else again and again.”

His eyes became red.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“I know.”

That answer surprised him.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

I smiled sadly.

“You didn’t hurt me because you wanted to.”

“You hurt me because you stopped seeing me.”

Those words stayed between us.

Because they were true.

Serena eventually left the airline.

Not because of me.

Because Adrian finally understood something.

He had returned to his past because it felt familiar.

But familiar was not always right.

Years later, I saw Adrian again.

Aviation conference.

Different countries.

Different lives.

He was still an excellent pilot.

I was too.

We stood together for a photograph with other captains.

Someone joked:

“You two used to be the most famous pair in the company.”

We smiled.

Used to.

After the event, Adrian stopped me.

“Do you ever regret choosing another route?”

I thought about it.

The old apartment.

The old dreams.

The girl who believed love meant staying no matter what.

Then I looked at the sky.

“No.”

A pause.

“Do you?”

He smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

But regret belongs to the person who stayed behind.

Not the person who moved forward.

Adrian and I once flew the same skies.

We knew the same storms.

We dreamed of the same future.

But one day he chose to return to someone from his past.

And I chose to build a future where I would never have to compete for a place in someone’s heart.

The world is full of routes.

Some meet.

Some separate.

Some disappear forever.

Adrian flew east.

I flew west.

Two parallel lines.

Never crossing again.

And for the first time in my life…

I was exactly where I wanted to be.
