PART 2: The Woman Who Returned For My Fiancé Lost More Than She Expected

Sophia stood at the entrance of my house.

White coat.

Red eyes.

A fragile expression that looked carefully practiced.

And her hand was still holding Adrian’s sleeve.

The same sleeve that appeared in Chloe’s video.

The same sleeve that had started all those rumors.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian finally said:

“Claire, Sophia just returned from abroad. She has nowhere to stay right now.”

I looked at him.

Not at her.

At him.

Because what mattered was not that Sophia came back.

What mattered was whether Adrian would choose to make space for her.

“I understand.”

My answer was calm.

Too calm.

Sophia looked surprised.

She probably expected anger.

A confrontation.

A jealous fiancée.

Instead, I simply picked up my soup bowl again.

Adrian frowned.

“That’s it?”

I looked at him.

“What else should I say?”

“She needs help.”

“I know.”

“She has been through a difficult divorce.”

“I know.”

“Then…”

He stopped.

Because even he didn’t know what argument he was trying to make.

Sophia lowered her head.

“Claire, I really don’t want to cause trouble between you and Adrian.”

That sentence.

Everyone knew what it meant.

A person who truly didn’t want trouble would never say it.

She continued softly:

“I can stay in a hotel.”

Adrian immediately replied:

“No need.”

Three words.

Simple.

Automatic.

But enough.

I noticed.

Sophia noticed too.

“Stay in the guest room.”

Adrian said.

I smiled.

“Of course.”

Sophia looked at me.

Maybe she was disappointed.

Maybe she wanted me to refuse.

But I didn’t.

Because I suddenly understood something.

A woman who fights for a man who doesn’t choose her has already lost.

I wanted to see something else.

I wanted to know who Adrian Bennett would choose when nobody forced him.

That night, Adrian came into our bedroom late.

I was reading documents from work.

“You’re angry.”

I didn’t look up.

“No.”

“You always say that when you’re angry.”

I closed the folder.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“Do you still love Sophia?”

The room became silent.

A question I had never asked before.

Because I had always believed that some questions only created pain.

But sometimes…

Not asking creates even more.

Adrian looked away.

“She is my past.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He stayed quiet.

After several seconds, he said:

“No.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“You believe me?”

I smiled slightly.

“I believe your answer.”

“But?”

“But I don’t know if your actions will say the same thing.”

The next morning, Sophia appeared at breakfast.

She wore a simple dress.

The kind of simple that was obviously expensive.

She sat beside Adrian naturally.

Too naturally.

Like she had been sitting there for years.

“Adrian, do you remember when we used to eat breakfast before school?”

She laughed.

“You always stole my toast.”

Adrian smiled.

A real smile.

For the first time in a long time…

I saw the expression everyone talked about.

The expression people said belonged to Sophia.

I lowered my eyes.

Not because I was hurt.

Because I was observing.

Years in business had taught me something:

The most dangerous people were not those who showed their intentions.

They were those who made everyone else reveal theirs.

At noon, my assistant called.

“Claire, the Harrison project partner requested another meeting.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“They want confirmation that the Bennett family alliance is stable.”

I understood immediately.

Sophia’s return was no longer just gossip.

It was becoming a weapon.

That afternoon, I called Adrian.

“Can we talk?”

“I’m busy.”

“With Sophia?”

Silence.

Then:

“Claire.”

His voice became colder.

“Don’t start imagining things.”

I smiled.

Interesting.

I hadn’t accused him.

But he was already defending himself.

“I need to remind you of something.”

“What?”

“Our engagement isn’t just a relationship.”

“It represents two companies.”

“I know.”

“Then control the situation.”

Another silence.

“What are you asking me to do?”

I looked out the window.

“I’m asking you to remember who is standing beside you.”

That night, something unexpected happened.

The Bennett Group’s largest investor suddenly announced they were reviewing their cooperation.

The reason?

Concerns about internal instability.

Everyone knew what that meant.

Sophia.

The rumors.

The engagement.

The uncertainty.

For the first time, Adrian looked worried.

Not about love.

About business.

He came to my office late at night.

“Claire.”

I looked up.

“What’s wrong?”

He placed the documents on my desk.

“You were right.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“About what?”

“The rumors are affecting the company.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

He stared at me.

“You knew this would happen?”

“I suspected.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I did.”

“You told me to control the situation.”

A pause.

“You didn’t listen.”

Adrian became silent.

Because he remembered.

Every warning.

Every meeting.

Every time I mentioned the risks.

And every time he dismissed them because he thought it was only about jealousy.

Then his phone rang.

Sophia.

He looked at the screen.

For some reason…

He didn’t answer.

I noticed.

He noticed that I noticed.

“Why aren’t you answering?”

Adrian put the phone down.

“It’s not important.”

I looked at him.

A strange feeling appeared in my heart.

Not happiness.

Not victory.

Just clarity.

The next day, Sophia announced something that shocked everyone.

She wanted to invest in Bennett Group.

Not as a friend.

Not as a guest.

As a partner.

Using her family’s remaining assets after the divorce.

Everyone praised her.

They called it a perfect reunion.

A powerful partnership.

A love story returning stronger than before.

But I only looked at the numbers.

And I found something.

Something nobody else saw.

Sophia’s investment wasn’t a rescue.

It was a takeover attempt.

She wasn’t returning because she had nowhere to go.

She was returning because she wanted somewhere to belong.

And that place…

was mine.

I closed the file.

Then I smiled.

Because Sophia thought she was competing with a woman who loved Adrian.

She didn’t realize…

she was competing with the person who understood his entire empire.

The woman who knew every contract.

Every weakness.

Every hidden debt.

That night, Adrian came home.

He found me waiting.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Sophia wants to stay longer.”

I nodded.

“How long?”

He hesitated.

“A month.”

I smiled.

“Fine.”

His expression changed.

“You’re not angry?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I looked directly at him.

“Because now I know exactly what she wants.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does she want?”

I picked up my coffee.

“Everything.”

And for the first time…

Adrian looked uncertain.

Because he finally realized something.

Sophia’s return was never the biggest threat to our engagement.

The biggest threat…

was that he had underestimated the woman standing beside him.

And this time…

I wasn’t going to fight for my place.

I was going to let everyone see who truly deserved it.
