Part 2 — The Family Meeting

The Sterling family chat exploded within seconds.

Messages appeared one after another.

Arthur Sterling:
“Explain.”

Gabriel’s mother:
“Olivia, what exactly did you send?”

Gabriel’s younger brother:
“Is the pregnancy report real?”

I watched the screen quietly.

For five years, I had protected Gabriel’s reputation.

I had deleted messages.

I had hidden photographs.

I had negotiated with women who thought they could use their relationship with him to gain something.

I had cleaned every piece of dirt before it reached the Sterling family.

And today…

I simply stopped doing it.

An hour later, Arthur Sterling called me.

I answered calmly.

—Grandfather.

There was silence on the other side.

Arthur had always been cold toward me.

When Gabriel proposed, he had said:

“She is too ordinary for the Sterling family.”

He had believed I was a temporary obsession.

Someone Gabriel would eventually get tired of.

But after five years, I became the person who held together the family business.

The person who solved problems even Gabriel created.

—Olivia.

His voice was deeper than usual.

—Did Gabriel know about this pregnancy?

I looked at the divorce documents on my desk.

—Ask your grandson.

Another silence.

Then he asked:

—Do you still love him?

A strange question.

Seven years ago, I would have answered immediately.

Today…

I didn’t even need to think.

—No.

The old man became quiet.

Perhaps that answer surprised him more than the scandal.

That night, Gabriel came home.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

For the first time in years…

He looked nervous.

—Why did you send it to the family?

I was sitting by the window, drinking tea.

—Because it was good news.

His expression darkened.

—You know what this will cause.

—Yes.

—The shareholders will question me.

—Yes.

—The family will investigate.

—Yes.

He stared at me.

—Then why?

I looked at him.

—Because I was tired.

Those three words made him freeze.

—Tired of what?

I smiled.

—Of being your wife only when you needed someone to clean up after you.

His face changed.

For once, he had no answer.

—Olivia…

I interrupted him.

—Do you know what happened three years ago?

Gabriel frowned.

—What?

—When Camila first appeared.

He remained silent.

Of course he remembered.

Everyone did.

The young actress who suddenly became the face of Sterling Corporation.

The woman who appeared at every event beside him.

The woman everyone whispered about.

But nobody knew what happened afterward.

Because I handled it.

—I paid her agency to terminate the contract.

Gabriel looked shocked.

—What?

—I convinced her to leave the country.

I laughed softly.

—You thought she disappeared because she became bored with you.

His expression became complicated.

—Olivia…

—No.

I stood up.

—You never asked.

That was the truth.

He never asked what I sacrificed.

He only noticed when I stopped sacrificing.

The next morning, the Sterling family held an emergency meeting.

Everyone was there.

Arthur.

Gabriel’s parents.

The board members.

And me.

Camila arrived twenty minutes late.

She wore a simple white dress.

A perfect innocent image.

She looked at Gabriel first.

Then me.

—Mrs. Sterling.

Her voice was gentle.

—I’m sorry this happened this way.

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was still acting.

Arthur looked at Gabriel.

—Is the child yours?

Gabriel opened his mouth.

But before he answered, Camila placed a hand over her stomach.

—Yes.

The room went silent.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Then he asked:

—And Olivia?

Nobody spoke.

Gabriel looked at me.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of losing everything else.

The family.

The company.

His image.

I understood.

Even now…

I was not his first thought.

Arthur turned to me.

—What do you want?

Everyone looked surprised.

They expected tears.

A demand for revenge.

A fight.

Instead, I placed a document on the table.

—A divorce.

Gabriel’s head snapped toward me.

—Olivia.

I continued:

—No compensation.

No public scandal.

No accusations.

I only want my shares transferred back and my name removed from Sterling family records.

Arthur picked up the document.

His expression changed.

—You are giving up everything?

I shook my head.

—No.

I looked at Gabriel.

—I’m taking back everything that was mine.

The room became silent.

Because nobody knew what Gabriel had forgotten.

My father wasn’t just a businessman.

Before he died, he invested in Sterling Corporation when the company was nearly bankrupt.

The shares were transferred to me after his death.

Thirty percent.

Enough to make me one of the largest shareholders.

Gabriel had always assumed my position came from being his wife.

He never knew…

I had been protecting the company long before he asked me to.

Arthur slowly looked at Gabriel.

—You wanted to replace the woman who saved this family?

Gabriel’s face turned pale.

—That’s not what happened.

I smiled.

—Isn’t it?

That evening, Gabriel found me packing.

For once, he didn’t order me to stop.

He didn’t tell me I was overreacting.

He just stood there.

Lost.

—Was there ever a chance for me?

I paused.

A strange question.

After everything.

I looked at him.

—Yes.

His eyes lifted.

—When?

I closed the suitcase.

—Every time I forgave you.

Silence.

—Every time I waited.

Another pause.

—Every time I chose you.

His expression broke.

But it was too late.

Because the woman who loved Gabriel Sterling had already disappeared.

The woman standing in front of him now…

was the woman who finally chose herself.

Three months later, Sterling Corporation announced a new president.

Not Gabriel.

Me.

Camila left the country after the paternity results revealed that the child was not Gabriel’s.

The actress who thought she had won everything lost the one thing she wanted most.

His protection.

And Gabriel…

He stayed alone in the mansion where he once believed I would always wait.

Years later, people still asked him:

“Do you regret losing Olivia Sterling?”

He always answered the same way:

“I didn’t lose her.”

A pause.

“I was lucky enough to have her.”

“Until I wasn’t.”

Because some people only understand someone’s value…

after they stop receiving everything that person gave them for free.

And Gabriel Sterling’s biggest mistake wasn’t loving another woman.

It was believing that the woman who loved him would never learn how to live without him.
