Part 2 — The Choice He Never Expected

I looked at Ethan kneeling in front of me.

The man who had always spoken with confidence.

The man who controlled meetings, negotiations, and every situation around him.

Now he was looking at me as if I were the one thing he couldn’t control anymore.

And maybe that was exactly what frightened him.

—Laura…

His voice was low.

—Please think again.

I looked away.

Three months ago, if he had knelt like this, I would have cried.

I would have forgiven him.

I would have searched for excuses.

Maybe he was confused.

Maybe Chloe manipulated him.

Maybe our marriage could still be saved.

But that woman was gone.

The woman who waited for him to come home.

The woman who checked her phone every night hoping for his message.

The woman who believed that love meant enduring everything.

She disappeared the moment she read:

“Between her and me, there is only responsibility left.”

I looked back at him.

—Ethan, do you know what hurt me the most?

He swallowed.

—What?

—Not that you fell in love with someone else.

His expression changed.

—Laura…

—People change. Feelings change. I understand that.

I touched my belly gently.

—What I cannot accept is that you stayed beside me while secretly planning your next life.

Silence.

—You held me when I was sick.

—You told me you loved me.

—You watched our child grow inside me.

My voice remained calm.

—And at the same time, you told another woman that I was only a responsibility.

Ethan lowered his head.

For the first time, he had nothing to defend himself with.

That afternoon, Ethan followed me home.

He didn’t argue.

He didn’t shout.

He simply walked behind me like someone afraid that if he moved too far away, I would disappear.

When we entered the apartment, he looked around.

The home that we had built together.

The photographs.

The books.

The small baby clothes I had folded dozens of times.

Everything was still there.

Except the marriage.

—Laura…

I didn’t answer.

He picked up a tiny blue sweater from the table.

The one we bought during our first baby shopping trip.

His fingers trembled.

—I was happy when we bought this.

I looked at him.

—Were you?

He froze.

Because he knew the answer.

A happy man doesn’t secretly plan to leave.

Three days later, Ethan went to see Chloe.

I knew because his assistant accidentally called me.

She apologized immediately.

—Mrs. Hale, I’m sorry. I thought I was calling Mr. Hale.

I didn’t ask why.

I already knew.

But I was curious about one thing.

What would Ethan say to the woman he almost destroyed his marriage for?

Chloe waited for him in a cafe.

She looked confident.

Beautiful.

Certain that she had already won.

—Ethan, you finally came.

He sat across from her.

His expression was different.

Not the gentle look from the video.

Not the protective look she loved.

Cold.

Tired.

—Why did you ask me to come?

Chloe blinked.

—What do you mean?

—You knew I was married.

Silence.

—You knew Laura was pregnant.

Another silence.

—And you still chose to continue.

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

—Ethan, I love you.

He closed his eyes.

Years ago, those words would have moved him.

Now they only exhausted him.

—Do you know what Laura did?

Chloe looked confused.

—She protected me.

—She protected my reputation.

—She cleaned up every scandal I created.

His voice became quieter.

—And I repaid her by making her feel replaceable.

Chloe’s face changed.

—Are you saying you chose her?

Ethan looked at her.

For a long time.

Then he answered:

—No.

A pause.

—I chose the person I should have chosen from the beginning.

But it was already too late.

When Ethan returned home that night, I was gone.

Not completely.

I left the furniture.

The memories.

The things that belonged to both of us.

But I took my documents.

My savings.

My clothes.

And the last piece of myself that still belonged to him.

On the table was a letter.

Ethan opened it with shaking hands.

It only had a few lines.

“Ethan.”

“I don’t hate you.”

“But I no longer trust you.”

“A marriage cannot survive when one person is always waiting for the other person to decide whether they are worth keeping.”

“I hope one day you understand that losing someone is not the moment they leave.”

“It is the moment they stop waiting.”

Six months later, Ethan saw me again.

I was standing outside a hospital.

Not alone.

I was holding my baby.

Our baby.

He stopped.

His eyes immediately filled.

—Laura…

I looked at him.

The same man.

The same face.

But no longer the center of my world.

—He’s beautiful.

I looked down at my son.

—Yes.

Ethan stepped closer.

—Can I…

He couldn’t finish.

I understood.

After everything, even asking felt difficult.

I thought for a moment.

Then I handed him the baby.

Not because we were together.

Not because I forgave everything.

Because he was still the father.

He held our son carefully.

His hands shook.

And tears finally fell.

—I’m sorry.

I heard the apology.

But this time…

I didn’t need it.

Because I had already healed without it.

A year later, Ethan finalized the divorce.

He gave up his position at the company and moved away.

Some people said he lost everything.

But I knew the truth.

He didn’t lose everything because I left.

He lost everything because he had something precious…

and believed it would always stay.

As for me?

I built a new life.

A life where my happiness did not depend on whether someone chose me.

Because the greatest lesson Ethan Hale taught me was this:

Never beg someone to stay.

The person who truly loves you will never make you feel like a choice.
