PART 2: The Woman He Lost

The elevator doors finally opened.

The emergency workers rushed in.

Adrián was standing outside.

The moment he saw me and Celeste walking out together, his expression changed.

First relief.

Then confusion.

Then something I had never seen in his eyes before.

Fear.

He walked quickly toward us.

“Valeria.”

I looked at him calmly.

“Adrián.”

His eyes moved between me and Celeste.

“Are you both okay?”

Celeste immediately stepped closer to him.

“I was so scared…”

Adrián wrapped an arm around her shoulders without hesitation.

The movement was familiar.

Too familiar.

Three years ago, that gesture would have broken me.

That day, it meant nothing.

I simply turned away.

“Let’s go.”

Adrián grabbed my arm.

“Wait.”

I looked down at his hand.

He released me immediately.

A trace of embarrassment crossed his face.

“Why didn’t you tell me about your father?”

The question was so ridiculous that I almost laughed.

I stared at him.

“You didn’t ask.”

His expression froze.

“I was busy with Celeste’s situation.”

“Exactly.”

My voice was quiet.

“And I was busy burying my father.”

The silence around us became uncomfortable.

Celeste lowered her head.

“Mrs. Vidal, I didn’t know…”

I looked at her.

For the first time, I didn’t feel anger.

Only exhaustion.

“You didn’t know many things.”

She bit her lip.

Adrián frowned.

“Valeria.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You always say I misunderstand.”

“You always say there are reasons.”

“You always ask me to wait.”

I took a breath.

“But you never asked me to stay.”

That night, Adrián came home late.

Not to apologize.

Not because he finally understood.

Because he had received the divorce documents.

He placed them on the table.

“You really filed.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“You didn’t even discuss this with me.”

I looked at him.

“Did you discuss leaving me alone while my father was dying?”

His face changed.

“That wasn’t my intention.”

“No.”

I smiled.

“Your intention was never to hurt me.”

“But you did.”

He sat down.

For the first time in years, he looked tired.

“Valeria, Celeste is young.”

I almost smiled.

There it was again.

Celeste.

Always Celeste.

“She needed someone.”

“And my father didn’t?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“The hospital called you.”

His eyes moved.

“What?”

“The day my father died.”

Silence.

“They called my emergency contact.”

“You were listed.”

Adrián’s face slowly turned pale.

“I…”

“You were with her.”

His breathing became heavier.

“I thought there would still be time.”

I looked at him.

“That was the difference between us.”

“You thought there would always be time.”

“I knew there wasn’t.”

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“I loved you.”

I looked at him.

Maybe years ago, those words would have destroyed me.

Now they sounded like something from another life.

“I know.”

His eyes lifted.

“Then why?”

“Because love is not just a feeling.”

I touched the divorce papers.

“It’s a choice.”

“And you chose her.”

A month later, the divorce was finalized.

No public fight.

No revenge.

No dramatic confrontation.

Just two signatures ending a marriage that had already ended long before.

I left the country.

Not because I wanted to escape.

Because I wanted to begin again.

My father’s last words before he passed were simple:

“Don’t spend your life waiting for someone who doesn’t come back.”

At the time, I cried.

Now I understood.

He wasn’t telling me to stop loving Adrián.

He was telling me to love myself too.

Three years later.

I returned as the director of a medical research foundation.

The same hospital where my father had waited for a transplant invited me to speak.

After the speech, I saw someone familiar.

Adrián.

He looked different.

Not because he had aged.

Because he no longer carried the confidence of someone who believed I would always be there.

He stood in front of me.

“Valeria.”

I nodded.

“Adrián.”

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

“I heard about your work.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m proud of you.”

I smiled slightly.

“You should have been proud when I was standing beside you.”

His expression tightened.

“I was wrong.”

“I know.”

“I regret it.”

“I know.”

He looked at me helplessly.

“Do you hate me?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

That answer surprised him.

“I don’t hate you.”

“Then what do you feel?”

I looked at the hospital behind him.

The place where I lost my father.

The place where I lost my marriage.

The place where I found myself.

“Nothing.”

Adrián lowered his eyes.

Maybe that was the cruelest answer.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Not revenge.

Nothing.

Because hatred meant there was still something left.

Later that day, I walked past the hospital garden.

The flowers were blooming.

The same flowers my father used to like.

I stopped for a moment.

And smiled.

Because I finally understood.

The woman who waited for Adrián Vidal died the day her father died.

The woman who walked away from him…

was the woman who finally learned how to live.

And that was the one person he could never get back.
