PART 2: The Woman In The Car

When I saw the woman sitting beside my husband at the highway station, I finally understood that the lipstick mark had only been a warning.

The real betrayal had started long before that.

The parking lot of the service station was almost empty.

The rain had just stopped.

The lights above the gas pumps reflected on the wet asphalt, making everything look unreal.

I parked my car and immediately saw Ethan’s vehicle.

My heart tightened.

For nine years, that car had represented safety.

Family.

Trust.

Now it looked like evidence.

Marcus was standing near the passenger door.

The moment he saw me, his expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

“Claire…”

I walked toward him.

“Where is Ethan?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That silence hurt more than any explanation.

“Where is my husband?”

Finally, he pointed toward the convenience store.

“He went inside.”

“Alone?”

Marcus looked away.

“No.”

I followed his eyes.

Through the glass window, I saw Ethan.

He was standing near the counter.

And beside him…

was a woman.

At first, I only saw her back.

Long dark hair.

A cream-colored coat.

A familiar posture.

Then she turned slightly.

And my entire body froze.

I knew her.

Everyone in our neighborhood knew her.

Because she had been part of my life before Ethan.

Before our marriage.

Before our daughter was born.

Her name was Vanessa Cole.

My best friend from college.

The woman who had stood beside me at my wedding.

The woman who had held my hand when I gave birth.

The woman who had told me:

“Claire, you are the luckiest woman in the world. Ethan loves you so much.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Vanessa.

The lipstick wasn’t from a stranger.

It was from the person I trusted most.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I swear, Claire. I didn’t know.”

“How long?”

Marcus swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

“How long have they been together?”

He closed his eyes.

“I found out three months ago.”

Three months.

The number hit me.

Three months.

Exactly when Ethan’s business trips became more frequent.

Exactly when Vanessa started canceling our coffee dates.

Exactly when my husband began putting his phone face down.

I laughed.

Quietly.

Marcus looked at me strangely.

“Claire…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“It’s just funny.”

“What is?”

“I spent nine years worrying that I wasn’t enough.”

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“And the person who replaced me was someone who sat at my kitchen table and ate dinner with my family.”

At that moment, the convenience store door opened.

Ethan walked out.

He stopped when he saw me.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Claire?”

His voice was filled with shock.

Not shame.

Not regret.

Shock.

As if the biggest problem was that I had discovered him.

Vanessa walked out behind him.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Claire…”

I looked at her.

For a moment, I wanted to ask:

Why?

Why me?

Why my husband?

Why my home?

But I didn’t.

Because I suddenly realized something.

People who betray you always have explanations.

They always have reasons.

But none of those reasons erase what they chose to do.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Listen to me.”

I raised my hand.

“No.”

“Claire, it’s not what you think.”

I almost smiled.

That sentence.

Always that sentence.

“It isn’t?”

“No.”

He looked nervous.

“Vanessa wasn’t feeling well.”

I glanced at the soda bottle on the hood of the car.

The same bottle.

The one that exposed them.

“Then explain why she drank from my husband’s bottle.”

Silence.

Vanessa’s face became pale.

Ethan looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“And you…”

His eyes moved toward the bottle.

“You put something in it?”

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly I realized something.

Ethan wasn’t worried about Vanessa.

He wasn’t asking if she was okay.

He was worried about what I had discovered.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Claire, wait.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His expression was complicated.

“There is something else.”

My heart sank.

“What else?”

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket.

He took out his phone.

Then opened a video.

“I recorded this before calling you.”

“Why?”

“Because Ethan said something that scared me.”

The video started.

It was from inside the car.

Ethan’s voice appeared.

“Vanessa, don’t worry. Claire will never find out.”

I froze.

Then his next sentence made my blood run cold.

“After everything is transferred, we can finally stop pretending.”

Transferred?

What was he talking about?

The video continued.

Vanessa whispered:

“What about your daughter?”

A pause.

Then Ethan answered:

“She won’t lose anything.”

My hands became cold.

Because I knew my husband.

And I knew that tone.

The same calm tone he used whenever he had already made a decision.

Marcus stopped the video.

“There is more.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Claire…”

“The trip Ethan told you about wasn’t a business trip.”

My heartbeat accelerated.

“Then where did he go?”

Marcus looked at the car.

At the bottle.

At the woman who had once been my best friend.

Then he whispered:

“He went to meet a lawyer.”

“To change the beneficiary of his life insurance.”

The world became silent.

Because suddenly…

the lipstick mark no longer looked like proof of an affair.

It looked like the first clue of a much bigger plan.

And I had no idea…

that Ethan had not only been hiding Vanessa.

He had been preparing a future where I disappeared from his life completely.
