PART 2: The Man Who Saved Her Returned With the Truth

The divorce agreement was certified three days later.

When I walked out of the lawyer’s office, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Peace.

Not happiness.

Not sadness.

Just peace.

For three years, I had been trying to prove that I was worthy of Lucas Romero’s love.

But the truth was…

I was never supposed to fight for a place in someone’s heart.

Especially when that person had already given that place to someone else.

That night, Lucas came home late.

As usual.

But this time, I didn’t wait.

The living room was dark.

No warm lamp.

No dinner.

No footsteps when he opened the door.

He stopped.

Because for the first time in three years…

the house didn’t feel like his.

It felt empty.

—Isabel?

No answer.

He walked upstairs.

My things were still there.

But something was different.

The wedding photo on the bedside table was gone.

The one where I smiled beside him while he looked away.

The photo frame was replaced by a single envelope.

Lucas picked it up.

His expression changed.

Because he recognized my handwriting.

Inside was only one page.

The divorce agreement.

And a note.

“You once wrote this when you didn’t want this marriage.”

“Now I am giving you exactly what you wanted.”

Lucas stopped breathing for a second.

Because he remembered.

That night.

Three years ago.

Their wedding night.

He had been drunk.

Angry.

Forced into a marriage he didn’t choose.

He wrote those words without caring.

He never thought I would keep them.

He never thought those words would become reality.

The next morning, Lucas went directly to the legal office.

—Can this agreement still be used?

The lawyer looked through the documents.

Then looked at him.

—Commander Romero.

—This document has your signature and fingerprint.

—You acknowledged the terms yourself.

Lucas was silent.

—Your wife is only completing the procedure.

Wife.

The word sounded strange.

Because maybe soon…

she wouldn’t be.

At that moment, his phone rang.

Clara.

He answered automatically.

—Lucas…

Her voice was weak.

—I had another nightmare.

In the past, those words would make him immediately leave everything.

But this time…

he hesitated.

Only for one second.

But he noticed.

And so did Clara.

—You are not coming?

Her voice changed.

Lucas looked at the divorce papers in his hand.

Then he said:

—I have something important to handle.

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Clara asked softly:

—Is it because of Isabel?

Lucas didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know how to answer.

That afternoon, Lucas went to the hospital.

Not for Clara.

For me.

But when he arrived, he discovered I was already gone.

The nurse told him:

—Mrs. Romero was discharged this morning.

He frowned.

—Where did she go?

The nurse checked the information.

Then answered:

—Haven City.

Lucas froze.

Haven City.

The same city where Blackwood Holdings was located.

The same city where…

Adrian Blackwood lived.

He remembered the ring.

The way my face changed when I held it.

The first real emotion he had seen from me in weeks.

Not anger.

Not pain.

Something close to warmth.

And suddenly, Lucas understood.

That ring was not from him.

Someone else had saved me.

Someone else had reached me when he walked away.

Three days later.

The military district received unexpected news.

Blackwood Holdings had entered a major defense cooperation project.

The person representing the company?

Adrian Blackwood.

The same man rumored to never care about anyone.

The same man who had personally rescued a woman during the avalanche.

A woman named:

Isabel Salazar.

Lucas stared at the news report.

The photo showed Adrian standing beside me.

I was wearing a simple white dress.

No longer pale.

No longer exhausted.

No longer the woman who waited for him every night.

Adrian was looking at me.

Not like someone protecting a responsibility.

Like someone protecting something precious.

Lucas felt something painful in his chest.

Jealousy.

For the first time.

Real jealousy.

That evening, Lucas found Adrian outside a conference hall.

—You saved her.

Adrian turned.

His expression was calm.

—Yes.

Lucas clenched his fist.

—Why?

Adrian looked at him.

A faint smile appeared.

—Because she needed someone to save her.

Silence.

Then Adrian added:

—Isn’t that what a husband should do?

Those words hit harder than any accusation.

Because Lucas knew.

He had been her husband.

But when she needed him most…

he chose someone else.

Lucas found me the next day.

I was standing outside a hospital.

Not as a patient.

As a volunteer.

Helping families affected by disasters.

When I saw him, I stopped.

But I didn’t feel anything.

No pain.

No anger.

Nothing.

And that frightened him more than hatred would have.

—Isabel.

I nodded.

—Commander Romero.

The formal address made his face change.

—Don’t call me that.

—Why?

My voice was calm.

—We are not close anymore.

He looked at me.

—Can we talk?

I thought about it.

Then nodded.

—I’m sorry.

The first thing he said.

The words he had never said in three years.

I looked at him.

—For what?

His eyes lowered.

—For choosing Clara.

—For leaving you there.

—For making you believe you were not important.

I was quiet.

Then I asked:

—Lucas.

—Yes?

—If that avalanche had not happened…

—Would you have changed?

He froze.

Because he knew the answer.

No.

I smiled softly.

—That’s why it’s over.

His eyes became red.

—Isabel…

—You didn’t lose me because of Clara.

—You lost me because you never saw me.

A tear finally fell from his eyes.

The great commander.

The man everyone feared.

Standing in front of me…

unable to say anything.

Months later, the divorce was finalized.

Lucas Romero was no longer my husband.

And Adrian Blackwood…

never asked me to forget my past.

He only asked if he could be part of my future.

One year after the avalanche, I returned to the mountain where everything changed.

I touched the silver ring.

The ring that a stranger placed on my finger when I thought I would never survive.

Adrian stood beside me.

—Still keeping it?

I smiled.

—Yes.

—Why?

I looked at the mountains.

—Because it reminds me of the day I learned something.

He waited.

—The person who saves you is not always the person you love.

A pause.

—Sometimes…

—The person who saves you is the person who finally teaches you that you deserve to be saved.

Behind us, the wind passed through the valley.

And for the first time in many years…

I wasn’t waiting for anyone to choose me.

Because I had already chosen myself.
