PART 2: The Man Behind That Night Finally Spoke

Damian Whitmore spent three minutes staring at the statement.

Three minutes.

For the first time in eight years, I saw something I never thought I would see on his face.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not impatience.

Not that cold certainty that everything could be solved as long as he gave an order.

Fear.

Because the name behind the statement was not someone he could ignore.

Cassian Rothbury.

The man who controlled Rothbury Capital.

The man who had defeated the Whitmore family in three major acquisitions.

The man Damian’s father always warned him never to provoke.

The man who never appeared in scandals.

Never explained himself.

Never needed to.

And now…

he was asking to speak with me.

Damian looked up slowly.

—What did you do?

I almost laughed.

The question was so typical of him.

Not:

“What happened to you that night?”

Not:

“Are you okay?”

Not:

“Did someone hurt you?”

Just:

What did you do?

As if everything happening now was somehow my fault.

I looked at him calmly.

—You should ask yourself that.

His expression darkened.

—Don’t play games, Ivy.

—Games?

I pointed at my phone.

—For eight years, you decided everything about my life.

—Who mattered.

—Who deserved your attention.

—Who you would protect.

My voice became colder.

—Now you are finally discovering that there were things happening outside your control.

Damian clenched his jaw.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

His father’s name appeared.

He answered immediately.

—Dad.

The voice on the other side was furious.

Even from where I sat, I could hear it.

“What happened with Rothbury?”

Damian’s face changed.

—I’m handling it.

“You are not handling anything. Rothbury’s legal team just contacted our board.”

Silence.

Then:

“Who is Ivy Callahan to Cassian Rothbury?”

Damian looked at me.

I said nothing.

Because I didn’t know either.

Not completely.

All I knew was that six weeks ago, I woke up alone in that hotel room.

With no memory.

With no explanation.

And with a pregnancy that changed everything.

That afternoon, I went to Rothbury Capital.

I didn’t want to.

But Cassian’s lawyer had requested my presence personally.

The building was different from the Whitmore headquarters.

The Whitmore family liked showing power.

Gold decorations.

Huge halls.

Luxury everywhere.

Rothbury Capital was different.

Quiet.

Cold.

Efficient.

Like the owner himself.

The receptionist looked at me and immediately stood.

—Miss Callahan?

I nodded.

—Mr. Rothbury is waiting.

The office door opened.

And I saw him.

For the first time since that night.

Cassian Rothbury.

He stood by the window.

Tall.

Dark suit.

Expression unreadable.

But when he turned toward me…

his eyes changed.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

—You came.

My fingers tightened around my bag.

—You asked me to.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then his gaze dropped to my stomach.

A complicated emotion crossed his face.

Pain.

Regret.

Something deeper.

—I didn’t know.

I frowned.

—Didn’t know what?

He walked toward the desk.

On it was a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Hotel records.

Security footage.

Medical records.

My breath stopped.

—What is this?

Cassian looked at the documents.

—Proof of what happened that night.

I stared at him.

—You remember?

A silence.

Then he answered:

—Every second.

My hands went cold.

Because I remembered almost nothing.

Only fragments.

A voice.

A scent.

A strong arm holding me.

A feeling of safety.

Cassian looked at me.

—You were terrified.

I didn’t speak.

—You kept saying one name.

My heart sank.

—Damian?

He nodded.

—You thought I was him.

The room became silent.

I lowered my eyes.

Of course.

Of course I had.

Even when the person who came for me was someone else…

I was still searching for the man I loved.

The cruelest part wasn’t that I mistook Cassian for Damian.

It was that Damian had never been there.

Cassian continued.

—That night, I received a call from the hotel manager.

—They said a guest was unconscious and needed assistance.

I looked up.

—Why you?

His expression became colder.

—Because the hotel belonged to my company.

I nodded slowly.

—And then?

He looked away.

For the first time, his perfect control broke slightly.

—Then I found you.

—You were sick.

—You were crying.

—You kept apologizing.

My eyes burned.

I didn’t remember.

But somehow, hearing it from him hurt more.

—Why didn’t you contact me?

Cassian was silent.

Then he answered:

—Because the next morning, when you woke up, you were already terrified.

—You thought you had betrayed your fiancé.

I froze.

He continued:

—You looked at me like I was something that had destroyed your life.

My lips parted.

—So I let you go.

A bitter smile appeared.

—Maybe that was my biggest mistake.

At that moment, my phone rang.

Damian.

I almost didn’t answer.

But Cassian nodded.

—Answer.

I picked up.

Damian’s voice came immediately.

—Ivy.

He sounded different.

Less confident.

—We need to talk.

I stayed silent.

—Livia lied.

That sentence surprised me.

Not because I didn’t believe it.

But because Damian was finally saying it.

—She lied about the night.

My fingers tightened.

—And you?

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

—I made a mistake.

I closed my eyes.

A mistake.

Eight years.

A broken engagement.

A pregnancy.

A betrayal.

Everything reduced to two words.

—Damian.

My voice was calm.

—Do you know what your biggest mistake was?

He didn’t answer.

—It wasn’t leaving me alone that night.

—It wasn’t choosing Livia.

—It wasn’t even refusing to believe me.

I looked at Cassian standing across from me.

—Your biggest mistake was believing that I would always wait for you.

The line went quiet.

Then Damian whispered:

—Ivy…

But I ended the call.

For the first time in eight years…

I chose myself.

That night, the Whitmore family held an emergency meeting.

Because the news had already spread.

The mysterious pregnancy.

The hotel footage.

The Rothbury statement.

And the most terrifying rumor of all:

Cassian Rothbury had personally requested legal protection for Ivy Callahan and her unborn child.

The same man who had never publicly protected anyone.

Inside the Whitmore mansion, Damian’s mother looked at him in disbelief.

—You lost her?

Damian didn’t answer.

His father slammed the table.

—Do you understand what you did?

Damian lowered his eyes.

Because finally…

he understood.

For eight years, he thought Ivy was the woman who would always remain.

The woman who would forgive.

The woman who would wait.

But he had forgotten one thing.

A person can wait for years.

But once they stop…

they never return to the same place.

And three days later, when the paternity test results arrived…

Damian opened the envelope.

His hands were shaking.

Because the result didn’t just confirm who the father was.

It confirmed something much worse.

The child Ivy carried…

was not the only thing Cassian Rothbury had unknowingly protected that night.

Inside the report was another piece of information.

A secret about the Whitmore family.

A secret that would finally reveal why Livia had chosen that Valentine’s night…

and why Damian had been manipulated from the beginning.
