PART 2: The Wife He Protected, The Woman He Lost

For three days after I left the military family compound, Julián Álvarez didn’t call me.

I expected that.

Because the Julián I knew always believed that time could solve everything.

A difficult mission?

Wait.

A disagreement?

Wait.

A woman’s hurt feelings?

Wait.

He had always been certain that, after enough time passed, I would calm down and return.

Because for eight years…

I always did.

Except this time.

I didn’t.

The day I left, I took very little.

A suitcase.

My documents.

My mother’s necklace.

And the silver ring I had used the first time I proposed to him.

The same ring he never accepted.

I left everything else behind.

The photos.

The gifts.

The memories.

Even the wedding plans I had secretly prepared three different times.

Because a person can wait for love.

But nobody should have to beg to be chosen.

One week later, my former teammate called me.

—Elena, are you really not coming back?

I looked at the sea outside the apartment window.

A place far away from the military district.

A place where nobody knew my name.

—No.

She hesitated.

—But General Álvarez is looking for you.

I smiled faintly.

—He is not looking for me.

—He is looking for the person who always waited for him.

Silence.

Because even she knew it was true.

Meanwhile, Julián finally realized something was wrong.

Not when my room became empty.

Not when my clothes disappeared.

Not when my name was removed from the family housing list.

He realized it when he came home after a mission and instinctively called:

—Elena, where is my uniform?

No answer.

He opened the closet.

Half of it was empty.

Only then did he understand.

I was really gone.

That night, he called me.

I watched the screen light up.

Julián Álvarez.

Seven years ago, seeing that name would have made me smile.

That night…

I felt nothing.

The phone rang until it stopped.

Then a message arrived.

“Where are you?”

I didn’t answer.

Another one.

“Elena, don’t make things difficult.”

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even after losing me.

He still thought I was creating trouble.

The next morning, he came to find me.

He stood outside my apartment.

Still in uniform.

Still looking like the hero everyone admired.

When I opened the door, his eyes changed.

Because he finally saw it.

I wasn’t crying.

I wasn’t angry.

I wasn’t waiting.

I was simply finished.

—Why did you leave without telling me?

I looked at him.

—Would you have stopped me?

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

He would have asked me to wait.

Again.

—Elena, about Camila…

I raised my hand.

—Don’t.

His expression tightened.

—You misunderstood.

—No, Julián.

I looked at him calmly.

—I understood everything.

—You married her because you wanted to save her.

—You spent our savings because her future mattered.

—You brought her into our home because her situation was difficult.

I paused.

—But when I needed you to choose me…

I smiled.

—You said you weren’t ready.

His face became pale.

—It was only temporary.

I nodded.

—Temporary.

I repeated the word.

—Do you know what was temporary too?

He looked at me.

—My youth.

Silence.

—My patience.

—My trust.

—My belief that one day you would look at me the way you looked at her.

His hands tightened.

—That’s not fair.

I almost laughed.

—Fair?

I stepped closer.

—Julián, you asked me to wait eight years.

—You asked me to understand everything.

—Everyone’s pain.

—Everyone’s problems.

—Everyone’s future.

My voice became quieter.

—Except mine.

That afternoon, Camila called him.

I didn’t hear the conversation.

But I saw his expression change.

Concern.

Worry.

The same expression he used to have when I was sick.

When I had injuries during training.

When I stayed awake waiting for him after dangerous missions.

Except now…

that concern belonged to someone else.

And strangely…

it no longer hurt.

Three months passed.

Camila was promoted.

Her family stopped pressuring her.

The reason Julián had used to justify everything was gone.

So everyone expected him to immediately divorce her.

But nobody expected what happened next.

Because Camila refused.

At the military headquarters, everyone heard the news.

Camila had submitted a request.

She wanted to remain married to Julián.

Permanently.

The “fake marriage” that was supposed to last three years…

was now something she didn’t want to end.

When Julián confronted her, she only smiled.

—General, you saved me when nobody else did.

—How can I forget that?

He frowned.

—Camila, we agreed from the beginning.

She lowered her eyes.

—You agreed.

A pause.

—I didn’t.

For the first time, Julián understood something terrifying.

He had spent years believing he was sacrificing himself for everyone.

But maybe…

he had simply been making choices without considering the people who loved him.

Seven years later, when he saw me again in that meeting room, he thought I was still the same Elena.

The woman who had proposed ninety-nine times.

The woman who waited.

The woman who forgave.

The woman who would always come back.

But he was wrong.

That woman disappeared the night she saw the marriage certificate.

After the meeting ended, Julián found me outside.

—Elena.

I stopped.

—Yes?

He looked at me for a long time.

Then asked:

—Did you ever love me?

I was silent.

Because that question would have destroyed me years ago.

Now it was easy.

—Yes.

His eyes moved slightly.

—Then why did you leave?

I smiled.

—Because loving someone doesn’t mean allowing them to keep hurting you.

He lowered his head.

The great General Álvarez.

The man thousands respected.

Standing in front of me with the one thing he couldn’t command:

The past.

—If I had chosen you back then…

I interrupted him.

—But you didn’t.

Silence.

—And that is the only answer that matters.

Before leaving, he called my name one last time.

—Elena.

I turned around.

He looked like he wanted to say something.

An apology.

A confession.

A regret.

But after seven years…

some words arrive too late.

I simply nodded.

And walked away.

Because once upon a time…

I had spent eight years trying to make Julián Álvarez choose me.

Now?

I had finally chosen myself.
