PART 2: THE SON HE WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO KNOW

Alejandro did not move.

For a man who had faced battlefields, political pressure and enemies who wanted to destroy him…

A six-year-old boy calling another man “Dad” was the thing that finally broke his composure.

His eyes remained fixed on Nicolás.

The child who had just bitten him.

The child who had Ethan’s arms around him.

The child who looked at him without a single trace of fear.

“Your son…”

Alejandro whispered the words without realizing it.

Daniela immediately noticed the change in his expression.

She stepped closer.

“Alejandro.”

Her voice was softer than before.

“Don’t let your imagination hurt you.”

“He is not yours.”

I looked at her.

And I almost laughed.

Because seven years ago, she had taken everything from me.

And now…

She was terrified of the truth.

Ethan looked at me.

“Natalia, do you want to leave?”

I nodded.

There was no reason to stay.

Not for Alejandro.

Not for Daniela.

Not for the ghosts of a marriage that had died seven years ago.

I turned around.

But Alejandro’s voice stopped me.

“Wait.”

I didn’t look back.

“Why?”

A long silence.

Then:

“I need to know.”

I finally turned.

“Know what?”

His eyes moved to Nicolás.

“The child’s name.”

I held Ethan’s hand tighter.

“Nicolás Carter.”

Alejandro repeated it quietly.

“Nicolás…”

Then his expression changed.

Because that name reminded him of something.

Something from seven years ago.

The night I left the military district…

I had not only lost a husband.

I had lost a child.

At least…

That was what Alejandro believed.

After the fall, the doctors told me there were complications.

They told me my baby had not survived.

I left with nothing.

No child.

No marriage.

No reason to stay.

But what Alejandro never knew…

Was that the doctor who treated me was my father’s old friend.

And when he saw my condition…

He made a decision.

A decision that changed everything.

Years later, I learned the truth.

My son had survived.

The emergency records had been altered.

Someone had paid to hide the information.

Someone powerful.

Someone who didn’t want Alejandro to know.

At first, I thought it was Daniela.

But later…

I discovered there was another name on the documents.

A name I never expected.

“General.”

Ethan’s voice brought me back.

“Your past doesn’t give you the right to disturb my family.”

Alejandro looked at him.

For the first time, the two men truly faced each other.

One had my history.

The other had my present.

And the difference was obvious.

One man loved the woman I used to be.

The other protected the woman I had become.

Daniela suddenly grabbed Alejandro’s arm.

“Alejandro, we should leave.”

Her voice was nervous.

Too nervous.

I noticed.

And so did he.

Because he looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why are you afraid?”

Daniela froze.

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

His voice became colder.

“You knew something.”

The color disappeared from her face.

“About what?”

Alejandro stepped forward.

“About this child.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Nicolás looked at me.

“Mom.”

“Who is that man?”

I touched his hair.

“A person from my past.”

He thought for a moment.

Then asked:

“Did he hurt you?”

My heart tightened.

Before I could answer…

Ethan did.

“Yes.”

One word.

Simple.

Clear.

Alejandro heard it.

And for the first time…

He looked ashamed.

That night, Alejandro returned to the Valcárcel residence.

He didn’t sleep.

He searched through old files.

Medical reports.

Military records.

Everything related to the day I left.

And then…

He found something.

A hidden document.

A payment authorization.

Seven years old.

Signed by someone from his own family.

His hands began to shake.

Because the document contained only one sentence:

“Ensure Natalia never finds out the child survived.”

The next morning, Alejandro appeared at my workshop again.

But this time…

He didn’t come as a general.

He didn’t come as my ex-husband.

He came as a man who had finally discovered the truth.

“Natalia.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His voice was barely audible.

“Tell me the truth.”

“Is Nicolás my son?”

I stayed silent.

Because after seven years…

The man who once let me bleed on the ground for another woman…

Was finally asking about the son he thought was dead.

But before I could answer…

A small voice came from behind me.

“Mom.”

Nicolás was holding an old photograph.

One I had hidden for years.

He looked at Alejandro.

Then at the photo.

Then asked innocently:

“Why does this man look exactly like me?”

And in that moment…

Alejandro’s entire world collapsed.
