PART 2: THE GENERAL WHO KNEELED

When I opened my eyes again…

The first thing I heard was a heartbeat monitor.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

For a moment, I didn’t know where I was.

Then I felt the weight of my stomach.

The pain.

The fear.

And I remembered.

The ocean.

The jet ski.

Adrián standing on the shore while I begged him to save our child.

My hand immediately went to my belly.

“Doctor…”

My voice was weak.

“Where is my baby?”

The doctor looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw a smile.

“Your son is safe.”

My tears fell instantly.

Not because of Adrián.

Not because of the marriage I had lost.

Because my child was alive.

When I was moved to the private military hospital, my father was already there.

General Samuel Carter.

The man everyone thought was an old retiree who spent his mornings feeding birds in the park.

He sat beside my bed.

His eyes were red.

But his voice remained firm.

“My daughter.”

“I told you.”

“You never have to face anything alone.”

I held his hand.

And for the first time in years…

I allowed myself to cry.

Three hours later…

The hospital doors opened.

Adrián Valdés entered.

But he was no longer the confident man who had taken me to that island.

His clothes were wrinkled.

His face was pale.

And his eyes…

His eyes looked like a man who had finally understood the size of his mistake.

“Natalia.”

I turned my head.

No anger.

No hatred.

Just exhaustion.

“Why are you here?”

He stopped.

Because he probably expected me to scream.

To accuse him.

To ask why he betrayed me.

But I had already spent all my tears in the ocean.

“I didn’t know.”

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t know who your family was.”

I looked at him.

“Does it matter?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the answer was obvious.

It didn’t matter.

If my father had been a farmer…

If my family had no power…

If no helicopters had arrived…

Would he have regretted it?

Or would he have just watched me disappear?

Behind him, two military officers entered.

One placed a folder on the table.

“General Carter.”

“The investigation results are complete.”

My father’s expression became cold.

“Read it.”

The officer opened the document.

“Evidence confirms that the accident was not spontaneous.”

“The jet ski system was modified.”

“The emergency controls were disabled.”

“The medication given to Mrs. Carter before the incident contained an unauthorized substance.”

The room became silent.

My eyes slowly moved toward Adrián.

His face lost all color.

“Vanessa…”

He whispered.

The officer continued:

“Miss Vanessa Torres has been detained.”

“She confessed that she planned the incident.”

“But she stated she acted under the belief that Mr. Valdés would protect her.”

Adrián stepped back.

“No.”

“That’s impossible.”

He looked at me.

“Natalia, I swear…”

I interrupted him.

“Don’t.”

Just one word.

And he stopped.

Because he finally understood.

The woman who once begged him to love her…

Was gone.

That afternoon, Vanessa was brought for questioning.

She cried.

She blamed everyone.

She blamed fear.

She blamed jealousy.

She blamed me.

“Adrián loved me!”

“He said Natalia was too dependent!”

“He said after the child was born, he would divorce her!”

Silence.

Adrián stood behind the glass.

Listening.

Hearing every word.

And realizing…

She had never loved him.

She had only loved the future he promised.

A week later…

The military court announced the decision.

Vanessa would face charges.

And Adrián…

Lost everything.

Not because my family destroyed him.

Not because my father used his influence.

But because his own choices finally reached him.

His position.

His reputation.

His honor.

Everything he valued disappeared.

The last time I saw Adrián was at the airport.

I was leaving for Canada.

The same place I once refused to go because I loved him.

Now I was going there with my son.

A new life.

A new beginning.

Adrián stood several meters away.

“Natalia.”

I stopped.

He looked older.

Much older.

“Can you forgive me?”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I answered honestly.

“I forgave you a long time ago.”

His eyes brightened slightly.

Until I continued:

“Because carrying hatred for you would mean you still mattered to me.”

His expression froze.

I touched my son’s hand.

“Nicolás doesn’t need a father who remembers him after almost losing him.”

“He needs a family that protects him before danger arrives.”

Then I walked away.

Years later…

People still talked about General Valdés.

But not because of his achievements.

They talked about the man who lost the woman who once loved him enough to die for him.

And about the woman who survived.

The woman who discovered that her greatest strength was never her powerful family.

It was herself.

Because the day Adrián threw me into the sea…

He thought he was destroying my life.

He didn’t know…

He was pushing me toward the shore where my real life was waiting.
