PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED WAITING

For three days, Dominic didn’t understand what had happened.

He thought I was angry.

He thought I needed time.

He thought, like every other time, I would eventually calm down and return.

Because that was the pattern he knew.

I got hurt.

I cried.

I complained.

And then I forgave him.

But this time…

There was nothing left to forgive.

On the fourth day, Dominic came to the research institute.

Everyone knew him.

He was the perfect fiancé.

The successful businessman.

The man who always brought flowers on my birthday.

The man everyone believed was lucky to have me.

He stood outside my office holding a bouquet.

When I walked out, he smiled.

“Lucía.”

“I know you’re still upset.”

I looked at him.

No anger.

No sadness.

Just tiredness.

“Why are you here?”

His smile disappeared slightly.

“To take you home.”

I almost laughed.

“Home?”

“Yes.”

“Our home.”

I looked at the flowers in his hand.

Then at him.

“Dominic.”

“That place stopped being my home the moment you decided another woman belonged there more than me.”

His expression changed.

“Serena was only staying temporarily.”

“You keep saying that.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“Temporary for how long?”

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

That night, Dominic returned to the apartment.

Serena was sitting on the couch with the baby.

She looked exhausted.

But when she saw him, she smiled.

“Dominic.”

“You’re back.”

That simple sentence made him uncomfortable.

Because for the first time…

He noticed something.

The apartment had changed.

Not because of the baby.

Because everything that belonged to me was gone.

The books.

The paintings.

The photos.

My clothes.

Even the small plants on the balcony.

The place looked exactly like what it had become.

A home.

But not ours.

Serena noticed his expression.

“Lucía really left?”

He nodded.

Silence.

Then Serena lowered her eyes.

“Maybe I should go.”

Dominic immediately looked at her.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

She looked at him.

“You don’t want me to leave?”

He froze.

Because he suddenly realized…

For months, he had always answered for Serena.

He protected her feelings.

Her situation.

Her difficulties.

But when it came to Lucía…

He always expected understanding.

A week later, the wedding date arrived.

The venue was prepared.

The decorations were still there.

The guests arrived.

Everyone waited for the bride.

But Lucía never appeared.

Dominic stood at the entrance, his face becoming more anxious with every passing minute.

His mother whispered:

“Where is she?”

He didn’t answer.

Because for the first time…

He didn’t know where I was.

Meanwhile, I was at the airport.

A suitcase beside me.

A research acceptance letter in my hand.

The international program I had abandoned for him years ago…

Was finally waiting.

My phone vibrated.

Dominic.

I looked at the screen.

Then turned it off.

Not because I hated him.

Because I no longer needed to hear his explanation.

Three months later, Dominic found out the truth.

The apartment where he thought I had disappeared from…

Was never just an apartment.

The research institute had offered me a position abroad.

A position that would put me among the leading researchers in my field.

I had rejected it because Dominic said:

“What’s the point of building a future if we’re never together?”

I believed him.

Until he showed me that I was the only one sacrificing.

When Dominic finally saw me again, I was standing on a stage receiving an award.

My name appeared on the screen.

Not as someone’s fiancée.

Not as someone’s future wife.

Just:

Lucía Vega.

Research Director.

Independent.

Successful.

Complete.

After the ceremony, Dominic waited outside.

He looked different.

Older.

Tired.

“I was wrong.”

That was the first thing he said.

I nodded.

“I know.”

His eyes reddened.

“Can we start again?”

I looked at him.

The man I once wanted to spend my entire life with.

The man I had chosen over my own dreams.

Then I smiled.

“Dominic.”

“Do you know what the saddest thing is?”

He didn’t answer.

“I didn’t leave because Serena was there.”

“I left because when I was standing in front of you…”

“You didn’t notice I was already gone.”

Years later, Dominic still kept the wedding invitation.

The one with both our names.

He said it reminded him of the biggest mistake of his life.

But I never looked back.

Because the day I canceled that wedding…

I didn’t lose my future.

I finally recovered it.
