Part 2: The Man Who Thought I Would Never Move On

Adrian didn’t speak for several seconds.

Daniel stood beside me with Noah in his arms, one hand resting naturally on our son’s back.

Our son.

The words were enough to make Adrian’s expression collapse.

“So you remarried.”

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.”

“And he calls him Dad.”

Daniel’s eyes cooled.

“He doesn’t just call me that.”

“He is my son.”

Adrian looked at him sharply.

Then at me.

“You replaced everything.”

I almost laughed.

“No, Adrian.”

I lowered my voice.

“I rebuilt what you destroyed.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Marcus suddenly found the floor fascinating.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Elena, can we talk privately?”

“No.”

“Please.”

That word surprised me.

Adrian Cole had ordered people around his entire life.

He rarely asked.

He certainly never begged.

Daniel looked at me.

I nodded slightly.

He took Noah toward the garden.

Before leaving, my son waved.

“Mom, come find us!”

“I will.”

Adrian watched them disappear.

Then he whispered:

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

His jaw tightened.

“Did you ever think about coming back?”

I stared at him.

“After Lily?”

His face changed immediately.

For years, people had avoided saying her name around him.

I didn’t.

“I thought about Lily every day.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

His voice suddenly broke.

“Elena, I know I was wrong.”

Wrong.

Such a small word.

He said it as if he had missed an anniversary.

As if our daughter had not paid the price for his cruelty.

“You didn’t lose control for one second, Adrian.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You had time to stop.”

“You had time to listen.”

“You chose not to.”

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, there was something I had never seen before.

Shame.

Then he said quietly:

“Claire left me.”

I felt nothing.

“She testified during the investigation.”

That made me pause.

Adrian continued.

“She admitted Lily never trapped her on purpose.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

His face went white.

“She said the elevator malfunctioned.”

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything else.

Claire had known.

Adrian had punished our daughter over something she hadn’t even done.

And somehow, even after all these years, there was still another layer of truth waiting to hurt.

“When did you find out?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

That silence told me enough.

“Adrian.”

My voice turned cold.

“When did you find out?”

He looked away.

“Three days after the funeral.”

I stared at him.

Three days.

And he had never told me.

My hand slowly closed around my ring.

Not from grief.

From fury.

But before I could speak, Marcus suddenly approached us.

“Elena…”

He looked nervous.

“There’s something else you should know.”

Adrian snapped:

“Marcus, don’t.”

That was the moment I understood.

Whatever Adrian had hidden all these years…

Claire’s confession wasn’t the worst of it.
