PART 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND DANIEL’S SEVEN-YEAR “TREATMENT”

Clara did not let go of my wrist until we reached the hospital.

Not the emergency room.

Not the waiting area.

Straight to the private examination room.

That alone was enough to make me nervous.

Because Clara was not the type of person who panicked easily.

I had seen her deal with serious accidents.

I had seen her remain calm while everyone else was crying.

But that night, she couldn’t even look me in the eyes.

—Sofia, I need you to answer honestly.

I nodded.

—Did Daniel ever tell you where he learned those techniques?

I froze.

I thought about it.

Seven years.

Seven years and I had never asked.

Because I trusted him.

—He said he studied some books.

Clara closed her eyes.

For a few seconds, she didn’t speak.

Then she asked:

—Did he ever tell you why he needed to do it every week?

I swallowed.

“He said my body needed maintenance.”

Clara’s expression became colder.

—Maintenance?

The word sounded strange coming from her mouth.

—Sofia, the human body is not a machine that someone adjusts whenever they want.

The doctor entered with the first examination results.

Clara immediately stood up.

—Doctor, please check everything related to previous injuries, inflammation, and unusual changes.

The doctor looked at me.

Then at Clara.

And nodded.

The waiting time felt endless.

I sat there staring at my hands.

Seven years of memories passed through my mind.

The nights Daniel brought me tea.

The mornings he kissed me goodbye.

The times he told everyone:

“My wife trusts me completely.”

Yes.

I trusted him.

That was what hurt the most.

Because if a stranger had done something strange, I would have noticed.

But it was Daniel.

The man who knew exactly how to make me lower my defenses.

Two hours later, the doctor returned.

His expression was serious.

—Mrs. Zhou, we need to discuss something.

My heart sank.

—What happened?

He looked at Clara first.

Then at me.

—There are signs that suggest repeated external manipulation over a long period of time.

My fingers tightened.

—Manipulation?

The doctor chose his words carefully.

—Certain areas show changes that should not come from normal daily activity.

Clara’s face became pale.

—Can it be caused by professional treatment?

The doctor shook his head.

—Not without proper medical supervision.

Silence filled the room.

I looked at Clara.

She didn’t need to explain.

I understood.

For seven years, every Friday night…

I had let someone touch my body believing it was care.

When I returned home, Daniel was waiting.

He smiled immediately.

—You’re back late. Did you have fun with your classmates?

I looked at him.

The same face.

The same gentle expression.

The same man who had prepared my bath hundreds of times.

But now everything felt unfamiliar.

—Daniel.

—Hmm?

—Where did you learn those adjustments?

His smile disappeared for half a second.

Only half.

But I saw it.

—What happened? Why are you asking this suddenly?

I stayed silent.

That was enough.

His expression changed.

—Did someone say something?

There it was.

Not concern.

Fear.

I sat on the sofa.

—Answer me.

Daniel sighed.

—Sofia, don’t let other people put ideas in your head.

He walked closer.

—I’ve taken care of you for seven years.

—Have you?

The question made him stop.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

—What does that mean?

I looked directly at him.

—It means I spent seven years believing I was lucky.

“And now I don’t know if I was.”

His face darkened.

—Who told you these things?

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t asking if I was okay.

He wasn’t asking if I was hurt.

He only wanted to know who had discovered it.

That night, while Daniel slept, I opened his computer.

Not because I wanted to invade his privacy.

Because I needed answers.

Seven years of trust had disappeared in one evening.

I searched through old files.

Medical articles.

Notes.

Folders.

Then I found something.

A hidden folder.

Created seven years ago.

The name was simple.

“Project S.”

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside were photos.

Documents.

And messages.

The first message was from Daniel’s mother.

The date was one month after our wedding.

“The preparation has started.”

“The sooner her body adapts, the better.”

Another message:

“Don’t let her suspect anything.”

“She trusts you.”

I stopped breathing.

Then I opened the final document.

And at the top was a name.

Not mine.

Not Daniel’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone I knew.

My mother-in-law.

I looked at the screen.

And finally understood.

Daniel had not been “adjusting” me because he loved me.

He had been following a plan.

A plan created before I even realized I was part of it.

And the last line of the document made my hands go cold:

“After seven years, she should be ready.”
