PART 2: I RESIGNED AS MRS. QIN, AND ADRIAN FINALLY PANICKED

Three days later, I received the monthly transfer.

100,000 yuan.

I looked at the notification for a few seconds.

Then I opened the folder on my computer.

“Mrs. Qin’s exit plan.”

Inside were three documents.

My savings.

My investments.

And the list of everything I had contributed to the Qin family during the past two years.

I smiled.

If being Mrs. Qin was a job, then I had kept perfect records.

That evening, Adrian came home unusually early.

He placed his coat on the sofa and looked at me.

“You’ve been quiet lately.”

“I’ve always been quiet.”

“No.”

He walked closer.

“You used to ask where I was.”

“I stopped.”

“You used to get jealous when Lily was around.”

“I stopped that too.”

His expression darkened.

“Why?”

I poured myself a glass of water.

“Because I’m tired.”

He stared at me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then his phone rang.

Lily.

Adrian glanced at the screen.

Normally he would answer immediately.

This time, he didn’t.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Aren’t you going to ask?”

I smiled.

“It’s your phone.”

Something in his expression changed.

He rejected the call.

Then another call came.

Again, Lily.

He rejected it a second time.

“Bella.”

“Yes?”

“Are you angry with me?”

I almost laughed.

For two years, I had been the jealous wife.

Now that I wasn’t playing the part anymore, he suddenly cared.

“No.”

“Then why do I feel like you’re leaving?”

I looked directly at him.

“Because I am.”

His face went pale.

I took an envelope from the drawer and placed it on the table.

“My resignation.”

Adrian didn’t touch it.

“What resignation?”

“From being Mrs. Qin.”

He finally picked it up.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then stopped.

“You can’t resign from a marriage.”

“I can.”

My voice remained calm.

“Your family paid me to maintain the legal status of your wife.”

“I fulfilled the contract.”

“Now I don’t want the position anymore.”

He stared at me as if I had spoken another language.

“Bella, this isn’t funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

I stood up.

“The trust can stop the monthly payment whenever it wants.”

“I don’t need it anymore.”

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“Is this because of Lily?”

“No.”

“Then what is it?”

I smiled.

“Because I finally realized something.”

“What?”

“I wasn’t your wife.”

“You were my employer.”

The silence was unbearable.

Adrian suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t leave.”

I looked down at his hand.

Then at his face.

And for the first time, his eyes weren’t cold.

They were afraid.

I gently pulled my wrist away.

“You should have thought about that before replacing me.”

I turned toward the stairs.

Behind me, Adrian suddenly said:

“Bella.”

I stopped.

“I never planned to replace you.”

I turned around.

He looked down at the resignation letter.

“Because the truth is…”

His voice became hoarse.

“I never wanted you to be my employee.”

He lifted his eyes.

“I wanted you to be my wife.”

My heart skipped.

But before I could answer, his phone rang again.

This time, it was his mother.

Adrian answered.

After only a few seconds, his expression changed completely.

“What?”

He stood frozen.

Then slowly looked at me.

“Mom said the trust has been suspended.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

He swallowed.

“Because according to the original agreement…”

His voice trembled.

“If you resign, the Qin family loses something far more valuable than a daughter-in-law.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Adrian looked at me.

“The trust was never paying you to stay married.”

“It was paying you to stay away from something.”

And suddenly…

I understood why the Qin family had been so desperate to make me Mrs. Qin.
