PART 2: THE CLAUSE THAT DESTROYED HIS EMPIRE

Daniel spent the entire flight trying to reach me.

Twenty-three missed calls.

Forty-seven messages.

I didn’t answer any of them.

For eight years, whenever Daniel called, I answered immediately.

Even if I was in a meeting.

Even if I was sick.

Even if we were arguing.

I always answered.

Because I believed that was what a wife did.

But that day, sitting in first class while my husband was still pretending to be innocent three rows behind me, I finally understood something.

A person who truly values you doesn’t need to lose you before realizing your importance.

The plane landed in San Francisco at nine in the morning.

I walked out first.

I didn’t wait for Daniel.

I didn’t look back.

The moment I stepped into the airport, my assistant was already waiting.

—Mrs. Miller.

She handed me a folder.

—Everything is ready for tomorrow’s meeting.

I nodded.

—And Daniel Miller?

She hesitated.

—He has already contacted the company. He requested a private meeting with the board members.

I smiled.

Of course.

Daniel always moved quickly when his interests were threatened.

—Let him.

My assistant looked surprised.

—Are you sure?

I opened the folder.

Inside was the acquisition contract.

The company Daniel wanted to buy.

The one he believed would make him one of the biggest names in the industry.

The one he had spent six months chasing.

The one he never knew belonged to my family.

—Yes.

I closed the folder.

—Tomorrow, I want everyone present.

That afternoon, Daniel finally found me.

He appeared outside my hotel room.

His suit was perfect.

His hair was carefully arranged.

But his eyes betrayed him.

He looked like a man who had spent hours trying to find the right words and still had no idea what to say.

—Clara.

I opened the door but didn’t invite him in.

—Brother.

His expression changed immediately.

He hated that word.

Because it reminded him of the humiliation on the plane.

—Stop calling me that.

—Why?

I tilted my head.

—You seemed very comfortable having a younger “wife” while still being married to me.

His jaw tightened.

—Sofia and I have nothing.

—Nothing?

I smiled.

—Then why was she sleeping on your legs?

Silence.

—She was tired.

—And your legs were the only available pillow?

He looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

For years, Daniel had been good at hiding things.

But only because I had always wanted to believe him.

Now I was watching him without love covering my eyes.

And the truth was obvious.

—Clara, listen to me.

His voice softened.

The same voice he used whenever he wanted me to forgive him.

—You are misunderstanding.

—Am I?

—Yes.

He stepped closer.

—Sofia is important for work.

I laughed softly.

—Funny.

—What?

—You never touched my shoulder when I worked late.

His face froze.

—You never traveled overnight with me because of a project.

—You never let me sleep on your legs because I was tired.

Every sentence made his expression darker.

Because he knew.

He knew he had spent years giving another woman the attention I begged for.

—Clara…

—Tomorrow is the acquisition meeting, right?

He stopped.

A second.

Only a second.

But enough.

—How do you know?

I smiled.

—There are many things about me that you don’t know.

His eyes narrowed.

—What does that mean?

I turned away.

—You’ll understand tomorrow.

The next morning, Daniel entered the conference room full of confidence.

The board members were already there.

Investors.

Lawyers.

Executives.

Everyone important.

He walked to the front.

Then he saw me sitting at the head of the table.

He stopped.

—Clara?

I looked at him calmly.

—Good morning, Mr. Miller.

The room became silent.

Daniel looked around.

Confused.

—Why are you here?

I placed a document on the table.

—Because this meeting concerns my company.

His face changed.

—Your company?

The lawyer beside me stood up.

—Allow me to introduce Mrs. Clara Miller, majority shareholder and final decision-maker of Northline Holdings.

Daniel went completely still.

The man who always believed he knew everything about me…

Finally realized he knew nothing.

—That’s impossible.

I looked at him.

—Why?

—You never told me.

I smiled.

—You never asked.

The room became quiet.

Then I pushed another document toward him.

His eyes fell on the title.

Professional Integrity Agreement.

His face slowly lost color.

Because he recognized his own signature.

The same document he signed months ago.

The same document he barely read because he was too busy.

The clause was highlighted.

“Any undisclosed romantic relationship between an executive and a direct subordinate will result in immediate cancellation of the acquisition process.”

Daniel’s fingers trembled.

—Clara…

I leaned back.

—You spent six months building this deal.

—You spent eight months hiding your relationship with your secretary.

—And now you understand why honesty matters.

His voice dropped.

—You planned this?

I looked at him.

—No.

A pause.

—I discovered the truth.

I closed the folder.

—The rest was your own choice.

At that moment, the conference room doors opened.

Sofia walked in.

She was smiling.

Until she saw the atmosphere.

Until she saw the documents.

Until she saw Daniel’s face.

—Daniel?

Nobody answered.

Then the lawyer spoke calmly:

—Miss Martinez, please take a seat.

—This meeting also concerns you.

For the first time, Sofia looked afraid.

And Daniel finally understood.

The woman he thought was only his wife…

Had never been powerless.

She had simply been loving him.

And now that love was gone.
