Part 2: The Arrest Exposed a Bigger Betrayal

The moment the handcuffs closed around Adrian’s wrists, Bella stopped crying.

That was the first thing I noticed.

One second, tears were running down her cheeks.

The next, her expression became strangely blank.

Too controlled.

Military Police Captain Marcus Hale approached me.

“Commander Sterling, both individuals are secured.”

“Separate them.”

Adrian immediately turned toward me.

“Claire, enough.”

I looked at him.

“You still think this is about our marriage?”

His jaw tightened.

“Bella made a stupid mistake wearing my coat. I brought her here. Punish me if you have to, but don’t destroy her career because you’re angry with me.”

Bella lowered her head again.

Perfect timing.

I almost admired her performance.

Then one of the security officers approached.

“Commander, we found something.”

He handed me a laminated access card.

I looked at the name.

BELLA SUÁREZ.

Below it was printed:

SPECIAL OPERATIONS BRIGADE — LEVEL FOUR CLEARANCE.

Everyone around us went silent.

Bella’s face finally changed.

I lifted the card.

“Where did this come from?”

The officer answered.

“Inside her handbag.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

I looked at him carefully.

“You didn’t give her this?”

“Of course not.”

For the first time that morning, I believed him.

Because Adrian wasn’t acting offended.

He looked genuinely confused.

I turned the card over.

The authorization code printed on the back belonged to my office.

My personal command authorization.

My stomach tightened.

Only three people had access to that code.

Me.

My operations chief.

And Adrian.

I looked at my husband.

He understood immediately.

“Claire, I swear—”

“Take them inside.”

“Claire!”

I ignored him.

Bella suddenly struggled against the officer holding her.

“Commander Sterling, wait!”

I stopped.

Her eyes were no longer soft.

No tears.

No trembling voice.

“There’s an explanation.”

“Excellent.”

I smiled faintly.

“You can give it during questioning.”

Her face went white.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian sat in one interrogation room.

Bella sat three doors away.

I watched both security feeds from the command center.

Captain Hale stood beside me.

“Her clearance card is sophisticated.”

“Fake?”

He shook his head.

“That’s the problem.”

He enlarged the verification report.

“The system recognizes it as genuine.”

I stared at the screen.

“Impossible.”

“It was created twelve days ago.”

“Whose authorization?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then turned the monitor toward me.

My name appeared on the screen.

CLAIRE STERLING.

I felt something colder than jealousy settle inside me.

Someone had used my credentials.

And they hadn’t used them to steal money.

They had used them to create access to one of the most restricted sections of my brigade.

I immediately ordered an audit.

Within an hour, we discovered something worse.

Bella’s card had been used three times.

All after midnight.

All while I was away.

And every entry happened during nights Adrian had claimed he was working late at headquarters.

I entered his interrogation room carrying the report.

Adrian looked exhausted.

His wrists were free now, but two guards remained outside.

I placed the papers in front of him.

“Explain this.”

He read the first page.

His expression changed.

Then the second.

“That’s impossible.”

“Bella entered my restricted archive three times.”

“I didn’t know.”

“The dates match your night shifts.”

He looked up sharply.

“Claire, I never brought her here.”

“You brought her here today.”

“Today, yes. Before that, no.”

I studied him.

“Then how did she get inside?”

He was silent.

I pushed another document toward him.

“Her card was authorized using my credentials.”

Adrian stared at the signature.

Then he whispered:

“Oh, no.”

That reaction caught my attention.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.”

He stood abruptly.

“Where’s Bella?”

“Sit down.”

“Claire, where is she?”

My voice hardened.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because three weeks ago, she asked me about your grandfather.”

I froze.

“My grandfather?”

Adrian nodded.

“She said she was preparing a commemorative performance about decorated officers from the region. She wanted old photographs, service records, speeches…”

“My grandfather’s files aren’t theatrical material.”

“I know that now.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I gave her access to some family archives.”

Anger rose inside me.

“You gave her military documents?”

“No. Family documents.”

“Which ones?”

Adrian hesitated.

That hesitation answered me before he spoke.

“Adrian.”

“There was a sealed envelope.”

I stared at him.

“What envelope?”

“It belonged to General Sterling.”

My grandfather.

A man whose name alone could make an entire room of senior officers stand straighter.

“He left instructions that it should only be opened if something happened inside this brigade.”

My heartbeat changed.

“Why did your family have it?”

“My grandfather was entrusted with it.”

Old General Pierce.

The man whose memorial ceremony we were supposed to attend today.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Claire, I think Bella wasn’t interested in me.”

I almost laughed.

“That would be the first intelligent thing you’ve said today.”

“I’m serious.”

He looked directly at me.

“I think she used me to get close to you.”

Before I could answer, an alarm sounded from the hallway.

Marcus burst through the door.

“Commander.”

His expression was grim.

“Bella’s interrogation room is empty.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The camera feed was looped.”

My blood ran cold.

“She never left the room.”

“She did.”

Marcus handed me his radio.

“And she didn’t run toward the exit.”

“Where did she go?”

He looked at me.

“Restricted Archive Seven.”

My grandfather’s archive.

I turned and ran.

By the time we reached the corridor, the security door was already open.

No forced entry.

No damaged lock.

Bella had simply walked inside.

We entered with the guards.

The archive was silent.

One cabinet stood open.

A sealed metal box lay on the floor.

Empty.

Adrian stopped behind me.

“That was it.”

I turned.

“The envelope?”

He nodded.

Marcus checked the terminal.

Then his expression changed.

“Commander, someone accessed one additional file.”

“Which file?”

He slowly faced me.

“Your personnel record.”

I frowned.

“Why would Bella need that?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

He handed me the screen.

At the bottom of my classified record was a section I had never seen before.

A sealed directive issued twenty-seven years ago.

Before I had even entered the military.

Before Adrian and I had ever met.

The document contained only one visible line:

IF CLAIRE STERLING ASSUMES COMMAND OF SPECIAL BRANCH, ACTIVATE PIERCE PROTOCOL.

Adrian read it over my shoulder.

His face lost all color.

I looked at him.

“What is the Pierce Protocol?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he stared toward the open archive door.

Then whispered:

“Claire… my grandfather didn’t leave that order to protect the brigade.”

A pause.

“He left it to protect you.”
