Part 2: The Jade Pendant Summoned the Family Julian Feared Most

The red light on the jade pendant stopped blinking.

Marcus stared at it.

“What did you activate?”

I closed my fingers around the pendant.

“A Sterling emergency beacon.”

His expression changed instantly.

“How long?”

I barely managed to answer.

“Once activated, it sends my location to three people.”

“Who?”

“My father.”

“My brother.”

“And the head of Sterling security.”

Marcus looked toward the basement door.

Then he made a decision.

He stood.

“I’m taking you upstairs.”

I shook my head.

“Julian ordered—”

“I don’t care anymore.”

Those words had barely left his mouth when the door opened.

Julian stood there.

Isabella was behind him.

She wore a pale silk dress and an expression of practiced concern.

Julian looked from Marcus to the pendant in my hand.

His face changed.

“What is that?”

I smiled faintly.

“You recognize it?”

For the first time that evening, Julian looked uncertain.

Isabella stepped forward.

“Julian, she’s obviously trying to frighten you.”

But he wasn’t listening.

He knew exactly what the jade meant.

Years earlier, when we married, my father had placed that pendant in Julian’s hand before giving it to me.

He had said:

“If Amelia ever sends the emergency signal, I will assume she is unable to protect herself.”

Julian had laughed then.

Tonight, he remembered.

He turned sharply toward Marcus.

“Give it to me.”

Marcus did not move.

Julian’s voice hardened.

“That is an order.”

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Julian.

“No, sir.”

Silence.

Isabella’s eyes widened.

Julian took a step forward.

Before he could say anything else, the lights throughout the mansion flickered.

Then the security system sounded.

Not an alarm.

A notification.

The front gates had opened.

Julian pulled out his phone.

His expression became rigid.

Six black vehicles had entered the property.

Behind them came an ambulance.

And two unmarked cars.

Isabella whispered:

“Who are they?”

I looked at Julian.

“My family.”

Three minutes later, footsteps filled the hallway above us.

Heavy.

Fast.

Controlled.

Then a voice I had not heard in six years thundered through the house.

“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?”

My eyes burned.

Dad.

Julian went pale.

The basement door swung open.

Richard Sterling entered first.

At sixty-two, my father still carried the kind of authority that made executives stand when he entered a room.

But when he saw me, none of that remained.

He became simply my father.

His face broke.

“Amelia.”

Behind him came my older brother, Nathan.

He took one look at Julian.

Then stopped.

Not because he was afraid.

Because two Sterling security officers caught his arms before he could reach him.

Dad knelt beside me.

“Call the medical team.”

Julian immediately said:

“There’s been a misunderstanding.”

My father slowly turned his head.

“A misunderstanding?”

“Amelia attacked Isabella.”

“I didn’t.”

My voice was weak, but the room became silent.

Isabella looked at me sharply.

I continued.

“She whispered that Julian would always choose her.”

Then I looked directly at my husband.

“She dropped herself onto the floor.”

Julian frowned.

“Stop lying.”

Marcus suddenly spoke.

“She’s telling the truth.”

Everyone looked at him.

Isabella’s face changed.

Marcus continued:

“The west dining room has security cameras.”

Julian stared at him.

“What?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Mr. Grant ordered those cameras installed last month after the jewelry theft.”

Isabella went still.

I understood immediately.

The dinner had been recorded.

Nathan pulled out his phone.

“Get the footage.”

Isabella stepped backward.

“No.”

That single word told us everything.

Julian looked at her.

“Bella?”

She forced a smile.

“The camera angle probably won’t show anything clearly.”

Nathan raised an eyebrow.

“You seem very sure about that.”

Minutes later, one of the security officers returned with a tablet.

The footage played.

There I was standing near the dining table.

Isabella approached me.

She leaned close.

Then, without me touching her…

she deliberately stepped backward and dropped to the floor.

Nobody spoke.

Julian stared at the screen.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

His face emptied.

“Bella…”

Isabella started crying immediately.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“She hates me!”

“She didn’t touch you.”

“It was only supposed to make you defend me!”

Nathan laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You nearly destroyed my sister over a performance.”

Julian looked at me.

For the first time, something resembling panic appeared in his eyes.

“Amelia…”

I turned away.

My father stood.

“Save your explanations.”

He looked toward the officers standing behind him.

“My daughter leaves this house tonight.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You can’t take my wife.”

Dad looked at him.

“Watch me.”

Then he handed Julian a document.

Julian unfolded it.

His hands stopped moving.

“What is this?”

“A notice from Sterling Capital.”

My father’s voice became ice cold.

“Six years ago, my family provided emergency financing that prevented Grant Group from collapsing.”

Julian looked up.

Dad continued.

“The agreement contained a morality and misconduct clause.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning if a Grant executive committed serious misconduct against a Sterling family beneficiary, our voting proxy and debt protections could be activated immediately.”

Isabella whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Nathan answered.

“It means Julian may lose control of Grant Group before sunrise.”

Julian’s face changed completely.

But my father wasn’t finished.

He placed another envelope on the table.

“And Amelia filed something with our family attorney two years ago.”

I looked at him, confused.

Then I remembered.

A sealed instruction.

Something I had signed during one of the worst periods of my marriage and nearly forgotten.

Julian opened it.

His eyes widened.

Nathan read the heading aloud.

“Conditional Revocation of Marital Asset Access.”

Julian stared at me.

“You planned to leave?”

I met his eyes.

“No.”

I paused.

“I planned to protect myself in case I ever needed to.”

That seemed to hurt him more.

The medical team prepared to take me upstairs.

As they moved me toward the door, Julian called my name.

I stopped.

He stood alone now.

Isabella several feet behind him.

No confidence.

No authority.

No certainty that tomorrow would still belong to him.

“Amelia,” he said quietly, “I was wrong.”

I looked back.

“You weren’t wrong.”

His eyes tightened.

“You made a choice.”

Then Marcus appeared beside my father.

“Mr. Sterling.”

He held something in his hand.

A phone.

Not mine.

Isabella’s.

“We found this near the dining room.”

Isabella immediately moved toward him.

“That’s private.”

Nathan took the phone first.

The screen was still unlocked.

One conversation was open.

Hundreds of messages.

Between Isabella…

and someone saved under a single letter.

J.

Nathan scrolled.

Then his expression changed.

“Dad.”

My father read the messages.

His face hardened.

“What?”

I asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Nathan turned the screen toward Julian.

A message sent by Isabella three weeks earlier read:

AMELIA STILL HASN’T SIGNED OVER HER STERLING SHARES. ONCE JULIAN BELIEVES SHE’S UNSTABLE, WE CAN FORCE THE TRUSTEE CHANGE.

Julian looked at Isabella.

“What Sterling shares?”

My father became very still.

Isabella’s face lost all color.

And that was when I realized Julian had never known the real reason Isabella had returned.

She wasn’t trying to steal my husband.

She had been trying to get control of something even Julian didn’t know I owned.
