Part 2: The Husband They Never Knew Existed

My mother’s lips parted.

“Emma… you’re married?”

“For three years.”

She stared at me as if she no longer recognized her own daughter.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

I almost laughed.

“Look at what happened tonight, Mom.”

She had no answer.

Then the restroom door opened.

Lily stood there in her wedding gown.

“What’s going on?”

Mom immediately turned toward her.

“Emma says she’s married.”

Lily blinked.

Then she laughed.

“You?”

One word.

That was all it took to remind me why I’d kept my marriage secret.

“Yes, Lily. Me.”

Her smile became suspicious.

“To whom?”

Before I could answer, music from the ballroom suddenly stopped.

A murmur spread through the hallway.

Then my phone buzzed.

I’m here.

I picked up my purse.

“Come find out.”

When we returned to the ballroom, Dad was already holding the microphone again.

“There she is!” he announced. “Our fountain survivor!”

A few people laughed.

I didn’t.

Neither did Mom this time.

Dad noticed my black dress.

“What happened? Finally decided to stop looking like a drowned bridesmaid?”

“Richard,” Mom whispered.

He ignored her.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

The room changed instantly.

Several guests stood.

Others began whispering.

A tall man in a dark tuxedo entered with two members of hotel management beside him.

My father frowned.

Lily’s new husband went pale.

I walked toward the stranger.

And for the first time that evening, I smiled.

He reached me, looked carefully at my face, then at my damp hair.

His expression hardened.

“Emma.”

“I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not.”

His hand gently touched mine.

Then he looked across the ballroom.

“Who did it?”

Silence.

Dad lowered the microphone.

“And you are?”

The man looked at him.

“Daniel Mercer.”

The name traveled through the room faster than any announcement could have.

My father’s face slowly changed.

Richard Hale had spent twenty years trying to move his construction company into luxury developments.

He knew exactly who Daniel Mercer was.

Everyone in that industry did.

Founder and CEO of Mercer International.

The company controlling several of the largest development projects on the East Coast.

And, more importantly, the man my father’s company had been trying desperately to secure a partnership with for nearly a year.

Dad stared at Daniel.

Then at me.

“No.”

Daniel took my hand.

“Yes.”

I looked directly at my father.

“Dad, meet my husband.”

Nobody laughed now.

Lily’s champagne glass stopped halfway to her lips.

Dad forced a smile.

“Emma, this isn’t the time for one of your games.”

Daniel calmly lifted his left hand.

Wedding ring.

Then he lifted mine.

Matching ring.

“We were married three years ago.”

My father looked like someone had removed the floor beneath him.

“But why would you hide something like this?”

I stared at him.

“I wasn’t hiding Daniel because I was ashamed of him.”

Pause.

“I was protecting my marriage from all of you.”

Dad’s face reddened.

“This is ridiculous.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“What happened to her dress?”

Nobody answered.

He looked toward the terrace.

Then at my wet hair.

“Emma?”

I didn’t need to say anything.

A woman near the fountain whispered:

“Her father pushed her in.”

Daniel slowly turned toward Richard.

Dad immediately laughed.

“It was a joke.”

Daniel didn’t smile.

“You pushed my wife into a fountain in front of four hundred people?”

“Don’t exaggerate. Emma has always been sensitive.”

That sentence changed Daniel’s expression completely.

He reached into his jacket and handed Dad an envelope.

“I was planning to give you this privately tomorrow.”

Richard looked confused.

“What is it?”

“The final decision regarding Hale Development’s partnership proposal.”

Dad’s fingers tightened around the envelope.

For months, that contract had been all he talked about.

He opened it.

Read the first page.

And went white.

“What does this mean?”

“It means Mercer International won’t be investing.”

Dad stared at Daniel.

“You can’t make a business decision because of some family misunderstanding.”

“I didn’t.”

Daniel’s answer was immediate.

My father froze.

Daniel continued.

“We rejected your proposal yesterday.”

“Why?”

“Because our audit found irregularities.”

The room became silent again.

Dad’s expression changed.

Not anger this time.

Fear.

I noticed it immediately.

So did Daniel.

“What irregularities?” Lily’s husband asked.

Dad snapped:

“This doesn’t concern you.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma, there’s something I haven’t told you yet.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“The audit found your name.”

I stopped breathing.

“My name?”

“On documents connected to one of your father’s companies.”

Dad suddenly moved toward us.

“That’s enough.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“What documents?” I asked.

He hesitated.

“Personal guarantees.”

I stared at my father.

“I’ve never guaranteed anything for your company.”

“I know,” Daniel said.

Dad’s face had become gray.

I remembered something.

Three years earlier, shortly before my wedding to Daniel, Dad had asked me to sign several “family trust documents.”

I’d refused.

Or at least…

I thought I had.

“Dad?”

Richard said nothing.

Then Mom whispered from behind me:

“Emma…”

I turned.

She was crying.

My heart sank.

“Mom, what do you know?”

Richard shouted:

“Diane, don’t.”

Daniel immediately looked at her.

My mother covered her mouth.

Then she said the sentence that made me forget the fountain, the laughter, and every cruel joke that had come before it.

“Your father has been using your signature for years.”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

I stared at Richard.

He wasn’t looking at me anymore.

He was looking toward the exit.

Daniel quietly took out his phone.

“Don’t leave, Richard.”

Dad stopped.

“What did you do?”

Daniel’s expression was unreadable.

“Nothing yet.”

Then two men in suits entered through the ballroom doors.

My father recognized one of them.

His shoulders dropped.

Daniel leaned toward me.

“Emma, the reason I came so quickly wasn’t only your message.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“Our investigators discovered something an hour ago.”

His hand tightened around mine.

“The documents carrying your signature weren’t created three years ago.”

I felt cold.

“They’ve been using it as recently as last month.”

I looked at my father.

Then at Lily.

And suddenly I noticed something strange.

My sister wasn’t shocked.

She was terrified.

“Lily?”

She stepped backward.

Dad immediately moved in front of her.

That was when I understood.

Whatever secret Daniel had uncovered…

My father wasn’t the only person in my family who knew about it.
