Part 2: The Secret Maya Was Terrified I’d Find

Maya suddenly froze in my arms.

“Daddy, please don’t look.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I followed her gaze toward the swimming pool.

Several black bags were visible beneath the cloudy water.

I immediately looked away and carried Maya toward the fence.

“Okay. I won’t.”

That was when the back door opened.

Julian stepped onto the patio.

He stopped when he saw the broken cage.

Then he saw Maya in my arms.

“What are you doing here?”

I didn’t answer.

I moved toward the fence.

Julian stepped in front of me.

“You’re trespassing.”

“And you locked my daughter in a cage.”

His expression changed.

“She was being punished.”

Maya tightened her arms around my neck.

I felt her trembling.

“Move.”

“You don’t understand what happened.”

“I don’t need to.”

Then Maya whispered something that made Julian go pale.

“Daddy, Mom tried to stop him.”

I stared at her.

“Where is your mother?”

Julian immediately interrupted.

“Elena left.”

Maya shook her head.

“No.”

Julian looked at her sharply.

“Maya.”

She buried her face against my shoulder.

That was enough.

I backed away and called emergency services.

Julian didn’t try to stop me anymore.

Instead, he looked toward the pool.

And that frightened me more than anything else.

Within minutes, sirens filled the street.

Police officers entered the backyard while paramedics examined Maya.

I stayed beside her.

One officer approached the pool.

Maya grabbed my hand.

“Please.”

“You don’t have to look, sweetheart.”

Investigators began removing the bags.

I kept my eyes on Maya.

Then an officer called out:

“These aren’t bodies.”

I turned despite myself.

The bags contained clothing.

Documents.

Broken phones.

Family photographs.

And several boxes filled with Elena’s personal belongings.

Julian had apparently been trying to destroy evidence.

But evidence of what?

Then investigators opened the final bag.

Inside was Elena’s purse.

Her identification was still there.

So were her car keys.

She hadn’t simply left.

Julian was taken aside for questioning.

I crouched beside Maya.

“Sweetheart, where is Mom?”

She stared at the house.

“There’s another room.”

My stomach tightened.

“What room?”

“The one under the garage.”

Police searched the property.

Behind a shelving unit, they discovered a concealed door leading downstairs.

Maya wasn’t allowed near it.

Neither was I.

We waited in an ambulance outside.

Nearly twenty minutes later, an officer came running out.

“Elena’s alive.”

I closed my eyes.

Maya started crying.

Her mother was taken to the hospital weak and frightened, but alive.

Julian was arrested.

I thought that was the end.

I was wrong.

That night, while Maya slept beside me at the hospital, Elena asked to speak with me alone.

She looked exhausted.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Julian didn’t start doing this because of me.”

She looked through the glass toward our daughter.

“He was trying to find something Maya saw.”

My blood went cold.

“What did she see?”

Elena reached beneath her blanket and handed me a tiny memory card.

“I managed to hide this before he locked me downstairs.”

“What’s on it?”

“I don’t know. Maya recorded it.”

I inserted the card into my laptop.

There was only one video.

The timestamp was from three weeks earlier.

I pressed play.

The footage showed Julian standing beside the pool at night, speaking with another man.

The camera shook because Maya was filming from an upstairs window.

Then the second man turned toward the light.

I stopped the video.

My entire body went numb.

I knew him.

He was my attorney.

The same attorney handling my custody case.

And then, from the laptop speakers, I heard him tell Julian:

“Once Daniel loses custody permanently, nobody will believe anything Maya says.”

I looked toward my sleeping daughter.

Suddenly I understood.

The cage had never been the beginning.

Someone had been planning to take Maya away from me long before she stopped answering my calls.
