Part 2: The Hospital Knew Her Name

I didn’t argue with Ethan again.

I went home and started checking documents.

The house had belonged to me before our marriage. My parents had transferred it to me years earlier.

Yet somehow, Claire and Emma had been registered there without me ever appearing in an office.

That meant someone had submitted paperwork in my name.

The next morning, I contacted the registration office and requested copies of everything.

When the clerk placed the application in front of me, my stomach dropped.

There was my name.

And beneath it—

my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

“Who submitted this?”

The clerk checked the file.

“Your husband.”

I photographed every page.

Then I called a lawyer.

But the real shock came that afternoon.

One of Ethan’s colleagues called me.

Dr. Marcus Chen.

His voice was uncomfortable.

“Olivia, about yesterday…”

“You knew Claire.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Marcus exhaled.

“Everyone in surgery knows her.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

“She used to work here as a nurse.”

That wasn’t surprising.

What he said next was.

“Ethan got her the position.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

Ethan and I had been married for five.

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

“And Emma?”

Another silence.

“Olivia, you need to ask Ethan.”

“No. I’m asking you.”

Marcus finally whispered:

“People have been wondering for years whether Emma is his daughter.”

Everything around me went quiet.

Emma was six.

I did the math once.

Then again.

Claire had been in Ethan’s life before our wedding.

And apparently after it.

That evening Ethan came home furious.

“You called Marcus?”

“I requested the registration documents too.”

His expression changed.

I placed the forged application on the table.

“Would you like to explain my signature?”

“Olivia—”

“Did you forge it?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“That’s either my signature or it isn’t.”

He looked away.

That was enough.

Then I showed him Claire’s employment dates.

His face hardened.

“Who gave you those?”

“Interesting question. Mine is simpler.”

I looked directly at him.

“Is Emma your daughter?”

Ethan froze.

For several seconds, he said absolutely nothing.

Then:

“No.”

Too slow.

“You had to think about that?”

“Because this is insane.”

“Then take a paternity test.”

His face changed again.

There it was.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

I picked up my son.

“I’ve already spoken to an attorney.”

“You’re destroying our family over gossip?”

I almost laughed.

“No, Ethan. I’m checking whether you built another family inside my house.”

He stepped toward me.

“Claire was in trouble. I helped her.”

“Then why forge my signature?”

Silence.

“Why register her daughter?”

Nothing.

“And why did your entire department know her name?”

His phone rang.

Claire.

I could see it on the screen.

Ethan immediately declined the call.

Two seconds later, she called again.

This time I answered.

“Claire?”

Nothing.

Then I heard crying.

“Olivia…”

Her voice shook.

“Please don’t believe what they’re telling you.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t—or won’t?”

She started sobbing.

Then she said something I hadn’t expected.

“Emma isn’t Ethan’s daughter.”

I looked at him.

He had gone completely pale.

“Then why is he terrified of a DNA test?”

Claire stopped crying.

For one long second, nobody spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because the test wouldn’t just tell you who Emma’s father is.”

My skin prickled.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan suddenly grabbed for the phone.

I stepped away.

“Claire, what would it tell me?”

Her breathing became uneven.

“That you need to test your son too.”

I looked down at my eight-month-old baby.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan shouted:

“Hang up!”

But Claire spoke first.

“Olivia, when you gave birth, Ethan personally arranged the bloodwork.”

I remembered.

He had insisted on using his hospital.

His department.

His colleagues.

My mouth went dry.

“Why?”

Claire whispered:

“Because Emma and your son have something in common that Ethan has spent eight months making sure you never discover.”

Then the call disconnected.

I stared at my husband.

He didn’t deny it.

He simply sank into a chair.

And that terrified me more than any confession.

I held my son tighter.

“What did you do?”

Ethan looked up.

For the first time since I’d known him, Dr. Ethan Lu looked completely defeated.

Then he whispered:

“Emma isn’t my daughter, Olivia.”

A pause.

“She’s my sister.”
