Part 2: He Came Back for His Fiancée and Found His Sister-in-Law

Ethan slowly turned around.

Adrian stood behind us in a dark coat, his expression calm.

—What did you say?

Adrian walked directly to me.

—Grace is my wife.

Ethan laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he genuinely believed his brother was joking.

Then Adrian took my hand.

My wedding ring caught the hotel lights.

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

—When?

—Three years ago —I answered.

His face changed completely.

Three years.

Meaning I had married Adrian only a year after Ethan abandoned me.

—You married my brother?

—Yes.

—Why didn’t anyone tell me?

Adrian’s voice remained cold.

—You disappeared. Remember?

Ethan looked toward me.

—Grace, you’re seriously married?

I almost smiled.

—That’s usually what “wife” means.

He stared at Adrian.

—You knew she was supposed to marry me.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

—You left her.

—For four years!

—You say that as though four years is four afternoons.

Ethan stepped closer.

—Grace and I had an agreement.

I finally interrupted.

—No, Ethan. We had trust.

I paused.

—You destroyed it.

For the first time, he had nothing clever to say.

Adrian opened the car door for me.

Before getting inside, I looked back.

—Good night, brother-in-law.

Ethan’s face went completely white.

The next morning, Margaret called me.

Apparently Ethan had spent half the night demanding explanations.

When I arrived at the Cole mansion, he was waiting in the living room.

—Divorce him.

I actually laughed.

—Excuse me?

—You don’t love Adrian.

—And you know that how?

—Because you loved me.

Loved.

Past tense.

He hadn’t even noticed.

Then Ethan placed a small velvet box on the table.

Inside was the engagement ring he’d bought four years earlier.

—I’m ready now.

I stared at it.

—Ready for what?

—For us.

He sounded completely serious.

—I’ll marry you, Grace.

Margaret closed her eyes in embarrassment.

I pushed the box back.

—No.

Ethan froze.

Maybe that was the first time in his life he’d imagined I could reject him.

—Is this revenge?

—No.

—Then why Adrian?

Before I could answer, Adrian entered.

But he wasn’t alone.

Lena Lin walked behind him.

The same Lena Ethan had followed to Beijing.

She looked uncomfortable.

Ethan stood.

—Lena?

She placed a folder on the table.

—I think Grace deserves this.

Inside were printed messages from four years earlier.

Messages between Ethan and Lena.

But they weren’t romantic.

Not in the way everyone had assumed.

Lena had repeatedly told him not to abandon me.

One message read:

“Stop using me as your excuse. If you don’t want to get engaged, tell Grace yourself.”

Another:

“She loves you. Don’t humiliate her because you’re scared.”

Then came Ethan’s reply:

“If I tell her the truth, she’ll leave me. Better if she waits.”

My fingers tightened around the pages.

Lena looked at me.

—He came to Beijing because he wanted freedom without losing you.

Ethan’s face darkened.

—Enough.

But Lena continued.

—He believed that if everyone thought we’d chosen each other, you would be too embarrassed to move on.

I remembered the words I’d overheard.

After she had been mine, who else would dare to marry her?

It hadn’t been careless arrogance.

It had been his plan.

Ethan looked at me desperately.

—I was eighteen.

—Exactly.

I closed the folder.

—And Adrian was the man who never asked me to spend the rest of my life paying for what you did at eighteen.

Silence.

Then Ethan looked at his brother.

Something changed in his expression.

—When did you start wanting her?

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

—Before you left.

I turned toward him.

That was new to me too.

Adrian continued:

—But she loved you. So I stayed away.

Ethan laughed bitterly.

—How noble.

—No. Respectful.

That word landed harder than any insult.

Then Margaret spoke.

—There’s one more thing Ethan doesn’t know.

Everyone turned toward her.

She walked upstairs and returned with an envelope.

—Your grandfather changed the family trust before he died.

Ethan frowned.

—What does that have to do with Grace?

Margaret handed him the document.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

—This can’t be right.

Adrian remained silent.

I hadn’t seen the document either.

Margaret looked at me.

—Your marriage to Adrian wasn’t simply accepted by Grandfather Cole.

She paused.

—He had been hoping for it.

Ethan stared at her.

—Why?

Margaret’s next words silenced the room.

—Because the engagement arranged years ago between the Turner and Cole families was never legally tied to you.

Ethan’s face changed.

—What?

—It named the eldest eligible Cole heir.

Everyone looked toward Adrian.

Margaret continued:

—Your father changed the family announcement because you and Grace were already in love. Grandfather allowed it because he believed she’d be happy.

Then she looked directly at Ethan.

—After what you did, he restored the original arrangement.

I shook my head.

—Adrian never told me this.

—Because Adrian didn’t marry you for an arrangement.

Margaret placed another letter in my hands.

It was written by the late Mr. Cole shortly before my wedding.

I read the final sentence twice.

Then I looked at Adrian.

The letter didn’t discuss money.

It didn’t discuss family alliances.

It contained one warning:

“Grace must never learn what Ethan did with the Turner documents until she is ready.”

My stomach tightened.

—What Turner documents?

Adrian’s face changed.

And for the first time since Ethan returned, it wasn’t Ethan who looked frightened.

It was my husband.

Because apparently Ethan’s betrayal four years ago hadn’t begun with Lena.

It had begun with something belonging to my family.

Something Adrian had known about since before he married me.
