Part 2: He Arrived Too Late

The morning I left for Paris, I arrived at the airport three hours early.

I wanted no dramatic goodbye.

No last conversation.

No Daniel.

But while I was waiting at the gate, Sofia called.

—Elena, Daniel knows.

My stomach tightened.

—Knows what?

—That you’re leaving.

I closed my eyes.

—How?

—Clara told him.

Of course.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel appeared.

He looked exhausted.

—You’re really leaving?

—Yes.

—For how long?

—I’m moving there.

His face changed.

—You accepted that job?

I nodded.

Daniel stared at me.

—The one you rejected because of us?

—Because of you.

That correction hurt him.

—Elena, don’t leave like this.

—I’m not leaving because of you anymore. That’s the point.

Then Clara appeared behind him.

I almost laughed.

Even at my goodbye, somehow she was there.

But this time, Clara wasn’t crying.

She looked furious.

At Daniel.

—Tell her.

Daniel immediately said:

—Clara, don’t.

I frowned.

—Tell me what?

Clara looked directly at me.

—Daniel didn’t just ask you to reject Paris because he wanted you nearby.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

—Enough.

She pulled away.

—She deserves to know.

Then Clara turned toward me.

—Six months ago, the Paris company contacted Daniel before they contacted you.

I froze.

—Why?

—Because one of their directors knew him professionally. They wanted to know whether you’d seriously consider relocating.

I looked at Daniel.

—What did you say?

He remained silent.

That silence told me everything.

Clara answered for him.

—He said no.

My chest tightened.

—You rejected my opportunity before I even knew it existed?

—Elena, listen—

—Why?

Daniel finally snapped.

—Because I knew you’d take it!

The words echoed between us.

He realized what he’d admitted.

I stared at him.

—Exactly.

His voice softened.

—I was afraid you’d leave.

—So you made sure I never had the choice.

Daniel stepped toward me.

—Later they contacted you directly anyway.

—And then you made me feel guilty until I rejected them myself.

He couldn’t deny it.

Suddenly those five years looked different.

I had believed Daniel simply failed to choose me.

But maybe he’d always wanted me exactly where I was.

Waiting.

Available.

Never moving far enough to discover I didn’t need him.

My boarding group was announced.

I picked up my suitcase.

Daniel panicked.

—Elena, please.

For years, those words would have stopped me.

Not anymore.

—Goodbye, Daniel.

I walked toward security.

Then Clara called my name.

I turned.

She held out an envelope.

—Your company sent this to Daniel months ago.

I opened it.

Inside was a printed email.

The Paris firm hadn’t merely offered me a job.

They had originally considered me for a partnership track.

And someone had responded from an address I recognized.

Daniel’s.

“Elena isn’t interested in building a career abroad. Her priorities are here.”

I looked up.

Daniel had gone pale.

But Clara wasn’t finished.

—There’s another reason I kept calling him.

She looked ashamed.

—It wasn’t because I wanted him back.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Clara continued:

—Three months ago, I discovered someone had been contacting companies pretending to represent you.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

—Companies?

Plural.

She nodded.

—Paris wasn’t the first opportunity.

I looked at Daniel.

—How many?

He said nothing.

Clara answered.

—At least four.

Four opportunities I had never heard about.

Four doors quietly closed while I sat at home believing my career simply wasn’t progressing.

Then my phone vibrated.

An email from Paris.

Welcome, Elena. Your new office is ready.

I looked at Daniel one final time.

He hadn’t only kept me waiting for five years.

He had been making sure my entire life waited with me.

I boarded the plane.

But just before switching my phone to airplane mode, Sofia sent me a photograph.

She had gone to my apartment to collect one forgotten box.

The front door was open.

Daniel was inside.

And on my desk was a folder I’d never seen before.

Sofia had photographed the label.

ELENA — OFFERS / REJECTED

Underneath were dates going back four years.

Long before Clara returned.

Long before Paris.

Long before I ever realized something was wrong.

And suddenly I understood that leaving Daniel wasn’t the end of the story.

I still had to discover exactly how much of my life he had been secretly deciding for me.
