Part 2: The Father Who Arrived Too Late

When Adrian finally entered the recovery room, I was already holding Leo in my arms.

Three hours late.

Three hours after my son came into the world.

Three hours after I faced the most terrifying moment of my life without him.

He stood at the door, breathing heavily, his expensive coat still perfectly arranged.

The first thing he said wasn’t:

“Are you okay?”

It wasn’t:

“I’m sorry.”

It wasn’t even:

“Can I see my son?”

The first thing he asked was:

“Why didn’t you authorize me?”

I looked at him quietly.

After everything, that was still his biggest concern.

Not my pain.

Not our child’s birth.

Not the fact that I had gone through surgery alone.

His authority.

“The hospital said only the person I chose could make decisions.”

His expression changed.

“I’m your husband.”

I looked down at Leo.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You were.”

The word seemed to hit him harder than I expected.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

I didn’t answer.

Because Mateo’s message was still on my phone.

The transfers.

The clinic records.

The woman named Sofia Luo.

Eight months.

Eleven appointments.

Every month I sat alone in a waiting room while my husband was sitting beside another woman.

I had spent nine months wondering why he never asked about the baby’s heartbeat.

Now I knew.

He already had someone else whose pregnancy mattered more.

Adrian noticed my silence.

“Valeria, what’s wrong?”

I almost laughed.

After eight months of not noticing anything, suddenly he could see something was wrong.

“You tell me.”

His face changed.

“What?”

I handed him my phone.

Not the divorce papers.

Not the bank records.

Just the clinic payment records.

He looked.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then panic.

“Who is this?”

I watched him carefully.

“You tell me.”

“Valeria, this isn’t what you think.”

That sentence.

The oldest sentence in every betrayal.

I closed my eyes.

“You know what’s interesting?”

He stayed silent.

“For nine months, every time I asked you to come with me, you said you were busy.”

I touched Leo’s tiny hand.

“But apparently you weren’t too busy to go to eleven appointments.”

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

And that seemed to scare him more than anger would have.

“You listen to me.”

Adrian looked at me.

“I went through pregnancy alone because I thought you were working hard for our family.”

My eyes met his.

“I defended you when everyone asked why my husband never appeared.”

“I told them you were under pressure.”

“I told them you loved me.”

My voice became quieter.

“I made excuses for you.”

Adrian’s lips moved.

But nothing came out.

“Then I discovered the truth.”

He stepped forward.

“Valeria, Sofia isn’t—”

“Don’t.”

I stopped him.

“Don’t say her name like you still have the right to explain things to me.”

The room became silent.

My mother stood near the window.

She had heard everything.

Adrian looked at her.

“Mom, please explain to her.”

My mother turned around.

For the first time in years, she didn’t protect him.

“Explain what?”

Adrian froze.

“She gave birth alone because you weren’t there.”

“She almost lost her life.”

“And while she was fighting to bring your son into this world, you were paying for another woman’s medical appointments.”

“Mom—”

“No.”

My mother’s voice trembled.

“But you should know something.”

She pointed toward Leo.

“That child will grow up knowing who was there.”

Adrian looked at the baby.

Something changed in his expression.

For a moment, he looked like a frightened man.

Not an arrogant husband.

“I didn’t know.”

I stared at him.

“That is exactly the problem.”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t know when my appointments were.”

“You didn’t know when I was afraid.”

“You didn’t know when I went to the hospital.”

“You didn’t know because you never tried to know.”

My phone vibrated.

Mateo.

Another message.

We found the company records. Sofia Luo is not only connected to the medical payments. She is listed as the beneficiary of several transfers from Adrian’s private account.

I read the next line.

And my blood went cold.

The largest transfer happened three days before your delivery.

I looked up at Adrian.

He noticed my expression.

“What else did you find?”

For the first time, he sounded afraid.

I locked my phone.

“Nothing you need to know anymore.”

His face tightened.

“Valeria.”

I reached for the folder beside my bed.

The divorce papers.

I placed them on the table.

He stared at them.

“You prepared this before giving birth?”

“Yes.”

“Before you even knew about Sofia?”

I looked at him.

“I prepared this because I already knew something was wrong.”

His hands shook slightly.

“You were planning to leave me?”

“No.”

I looked at Leo.

“I was planning to stop abandoning myself.”

Adrian opened the folder.

Then he saw the final document.

Custody arrangement.

Asset protection.

Everything prepared.

His expression collapsed.

“You planned everything.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I picked up my son.

“I simply prepared for the day you finally showed me who you were.”

At that moment, Adrian’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Sofia Luo.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

Her voice came through clearly.

“Adrian, why did the lawyer contact me?”

He froze.

“What lawyer?”

“The one asking about the baby.”

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

The baby.

Not just the payments.

Not just the appointments.

There was something else.

Adrian slowly turned toward me.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely terrified.

Because he realized I wasn’t the only person who had been lied to.

Sofia had secrets too.
