PART 2: THE DAUGHTER HE SAVED TOO LATE

Three months passed after I filed for divorce.

Three months since I stopped waiting for Álvaro Castañeda to choose us.

And three months since I understood that the man everyone called a hero had destroyed the one person who loved him without conditions.

Lía was still in rehabilitation.

Every morning, I helped her learn how to do things differently.

How to hold a spoon.

How to write with her other hand.

How to smile when people looked at her with pity.

The doctors said she was incredibly strong.

I already knew that.

She was stronger than all of us.

One afternoon, while I was helping her practice walking with her new support equipment, someone knocked on the door.

I didn’t need to ask who it was.

I knew.

Álvaro entered slowly.

For the first time in years, he looked like a broken man.

Not the legendary sniper.

Not the decorated soldier.

Just a father standing in front of the daughter he had failed.

—Selene…

I didn’t answer.

His eyes moved toward Lía.

She was sitting by the window, drawing.

When she saw him, she stopped.

For a moment, I thought she would run to him like before.

But she didn’t.

She simply looked at him.

And that silence hurt him more than any accusation.

—My little girl…

Álvaro’s voice trembled.

Lía lowered her eyes.

—Are you here to see Marina?

The question hit him like a bullet.

Because it was the same question I had asked myself for years.

Was he here because he finally loved his daughter?

Or because Marina no longer needed saving?

Álvaro sat down slowly.

—No.

He swallowed.

—I’m here because I owe you an apology.

Lía looked at him.

—For what?

He froze.

Because there were too many things.

For missing her birthdays.

For choosing Teo’s school events over hers.

For making her feel like she was always second place.

For putting her in the line of fire.

His lips moved, but no words came out.

I watched him struggle.

For once, he couldn’t hide behind duty.

—I’m sorry I failed you.

Lía looked down at her drawing.

Then she quietly said:

—Daddy, you were always good at protecting everyone else.

A tear fell from Álvaro’s eye.

—But nobody protected me.

The room became completely silent.

I turned away.

Because that sentence wasn’t only from Lía.

It was from me too.

That night, Álvaro stayed outside the hospital room for hours.

He didn’t ask me to forgive him.

He didn’t try to explain.

Maybe because he finally understood that some wounds couldn’t be fixed with words.

But the next morning, something unexpected happened.

A news report appeared.

The kidnapping case was reopened.

The investigators had discovered new evidence.

The original operation report had inconsistencies.

And one detail changed everything.

The kidnapper had never threatened Marina’s life the way Álvaro claimed.

The angle of the weapon.

The position of the hostage.

The timing of the shots.

Everything suggested that Álvaro had made a choice before he ever pulled the trigger.

A choice based not on duty.

But on obsession.

When I saw the report, my hands went cold.

Because I finally understood.

My daughter’s injuries were not an unfortunate accident.

They were the result of a man who had spent years believing that one woman was worth protecting more than another.

That afternoon, Álvaro came to my apartment.

His face was pale.

—Selene, I need to tell you something.

I looked at him.

—You mean something else?

He lowered his head.

—Marina knew.

My heart stopped.

—What?

He closed his eyes.

—She knew Lía was in danger.

The room seemed to disappear.

—Explain.

Álvaro’s voice was barely audible.

—Before the operation, Marina told me she couldn’t lose Teo’s father and her son again.

I stared at him.

—And you listened to her.

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

The truth was already there.

After all these years, I finally saw the complete picture.

It was never about saving a life.

It was about choosing one family over another.

And now Álvaro was about to lose everything.

His marriage.

His reputation.

His career.

And the trust of the daughter who had once waited every day for him to come home.

But before I could say anything, my phone rang.

It was Lía’s doctor.

His voice sounded urgent.

—Mrs. Castañeda, you need to come to the hospital immediately.

I stood up.

—What happened?

There was a pause.

Then he said:

—Your daughter remembered something from the day of the kidnapping.

I looked at Álvaro.

And for the first time…

I saw fear in his eyes.

Because whatever Lía remembered…

could destroy the last excuse he had left.
