PART 2: THE MIXER REVEALED WHAT MY NEIGHBOR WAS REALLY HIDING.

The next morning, I didn’t confront Denise.

I didn’t accuse her.

I didn’t even mention the mixer again.

Because by then, I understood something important.

People like Denise didn’t reveal themselves when they were questioned.

They revealed themselves when they thought they had won.

So instead of arguing, I made a plan.

The first thing I did was take the mixer to a repair shop.

Not because I believed Denise would admit anything.

But because I needed proof.

The repair technician carefully examined it for almost an hour.

When he finally looked up, his expression was serious.

“This wasn’t normal wear and tear.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?”

He turned the mixer around and pointed to the damaged area.

“Someone forced the motor while it was running.”

“These machines are old, but they don’t fail like this unless something puts unusual pressure on the mechanism.”

I stared at the mixer.

My mother’s mixer.

The same machine that had survived decades of Sunday mornings.

The same machine my mother used while teaching me how to bake.

And someone had treated it like it meant nothing.

“Can it be repaired?”

He nodded.

“Yes. But it will take some time.”

I thanked him and left.

On the drive home, I kept thinking about Denise.

The ladder.

The pressure washer.

The slow cooker.

The roasting pan.

All those little things.

Every time something came back damaged, I convinced myself it was an accident.

I told myself:

She’s just careless.

She’s just busy.

She’s just not as careful as I am.

But suddenly, every memory looked different.

That afternoon, I checked my doorbell camera recordings.

I rarely looked at them unless there was a delivery.

But this time, I searched through every clip from the day Denise returned the mixer.

And there it was.

At 6:42 in the morning.

Denise walked onto my porch carrying the mixer.

She looked around.

She knew nobody was watching.

Then she placed it beside my door.

But before she left…

she stopped.

She looked directly at the camera.

For a second, I thought maybe she had noticed it.

Then she smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A knowing smile.

And she walked away.

I watched the video three more times.

She wasn’t embarrassed.

She wasn’t in a hurry.

She wasn’t afraid I would find the broken mixer.

She wanted me to find it.

That realization made my hands cold.

But I still needed to know why.

The answer came two days later.

My neighbor across the street, Linda, knocked on my door.

She looked uncomfortable.

“Are you still talking to Denise?”

I hesitated.

“Why?”

She sighed.

“I didn’t want to get involved, but I think you should know.”

She told me that Denise had been hosting a large baking event that weekend.

A neighborhood fundraiser.

And apparently, Denise had been telling everyone that she owned a vintage KitchenAid mixer that had belonged to her grandmother.

My heart stopped.

“Her grandmother?”

Linda nodded.

“Yes. She showed pictures of it too.”

I immediately understood.

Denise didn’t just borrow my mother’s mixer.

She wanted people to believe it was hers.

She wanted the attention.

The admiration.

The story.

My mother’s memories had become a decoration for Denise’s image.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the machine.

Because I finally understood why she chose that mixer.

It wasn’t just expensive.

It wasn’t just useful.

It had a history.

And she wanted to borrow that history.

That evening, I sent Denise a message.

“Can you come over tomorrow? I need to discuss the mixer.”

She replied almost immediately.

“Sure. What’s the problem?”

I smiled.

Because she still didn’t know.

The next day, Denise arrived confident as always.

She walked into my house like nothing had happened.

“I hope you aren’t still upset about the mixer.”

I placed my phone on the table.

“No.”

She relaxed.

“Good. I hate unnecessary drama.”

I pressed play.

The doorbell footage appeared.

Her smile slowly disappeared.

She watched herself leave the mixer outside.

She watched herself look at the camera.

She watched herself smile.

The room became silent.

Then I played the repair technician’s report.

“This proves someone damaged the motor while using it.”

Denise’s face changed.

“You can’t prove it was me.”

I nodded.

“You’re right.”

“I can’t prove everything.”

“But I can prove one thing.”

I looked directly at her.

“You never planned to return my mother’s mixer with respect.”

For the first time, Denise looked nervous.

Then she stood up.

“You are making a huge deal out of an old appliance.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

“I’m making a big deal out of someone who repeatedly takes what belongs to other people and acts like they are entitled to it.”

She opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

Because this time, I wasn’t the neighbor who kept forgiving.

I was the neighbor who had finally kept records.

Before she left, I said one last thing.

“By the way, Denise…”

She stopped at the door.

“The repair shop found something else.”

Her face changed.

“What?”

I smiled.

“They found traces of another substance inside the mixer.”

She froze.

And for the first time…

I realized the broken mixer might not have been her biggest mistake.

Because whatever Denise had been hiding…

was much bigger than a damaged appliance.
