PART 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE TWINS’ SILENCE

The auditorium remained frozen.

Everyone was looking at Valeria.

But Santiago was looking at me.

For the first time in thirteen years, the man who had walked away from me without hesitation looked completely lost.

—Elena… what did that folder mean?

I stared at him.

The same man who once signed my divorce papers while I was fighting to keep my children alive was now standing in front of me asking for answers.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

But then I saw Mateo and Daniel behind me.

My sons were no longer little babies who needed me to protect them from the world.

They were fifteen years old.

Smart.

Strong.

And they deserved the truth.

The competition director opened the folder slowly.

—Mr. Montero, our audit team found more than altered grades. Someone attempted to remove Mateo and Daniel Ríos from the competition database before the final round.

A wave of whispers spread through the room.

Santiago turned toward Valeria.

—You did this?

Valeria shook her head immediately.

—No. This is ridiculous. Someone is trying to frame me.

But the director didn’t look convinced.

—The account used to access the system was registered under an executive assistant from Solórzano Enterprises. The same assistant who manages your wife’s private projects.

The cameras moved closer.

The entire country was watching.

Valeria’s confident expression began to crack.

—This proves nothing.

Then another voice interrupted.

—Actually, it proves everything.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man in a dark suit walked into the auditorium.

Santiago recognized him instantly.

His father.

The founder of Montero Group.

The man who had not appeared publicly in years.

—Father…?

The old man looked at Santiago with disappointment.

—You spent thirteen years believing a lie because it was easier than facing what you had done.

Santiago froze.

I saw confusion cross his face.

—What are you talking about?

His father looked at me.

—Elena never told you because she promised she would not destroy your life after you abandoned hers.

My heart tightened.

Santiago looked at me.

—Tell me.

I stayed silent for several seconds.

Then I finally spoke.

—The night you signed the divorce papers, I wasn’t only fighting for my pregnancy.

His expression changed.

—What?

—Your lawyer told me you believed the doctors were exaggerating my condition. You thought the babies would not survive. You thought leaving me was the safest choice for your reputation.

Santiago’s face became pale.

—That’s not true.

I looked directly into his eyes.

—Your lawyer knew my condition. Your family knew. Everyone knew except you.

Valeria suddenly stepped forward.

—Don’t listen to her. She’s manipulating you.

But Santiago didn’t look at her anymore.

He looked at me.

—Why didn’t you tell me they survived?

I smiled sadly.

—Because the last thing you told me was that you didn’t want a sick woman and two children ruining your future.

Silence.

Mateo and Daniel were listening now.

They had heard every word.

Santiago looked at them.

His eyes filled with regret.

—My sons…

Daniel stepped back.

Not because he hated him.

Because he didn’t know him.

—You knew we existed?

Santiago opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That answer was enough.

Mateo looked away.

The boy who had just won the biggest academic competition of his life suddenly looked like a child again.

A child realizing the father he never had was standing only meters away.

Then Valeria laughed.

A cold, nervous laugh.

—Fine. You want the truth? Here is the truth.

Everyone turned toward her.

She lifted her chin.

—Yes, I knew about them.

Santiago looked shocked.

—What?

Valeria continued.

—Thirteen years ago, I found out Elena was pregnant. I knew those children existed before our wedding.

Santiago stared at her.

—Then why didn’t you tell me?

Her smile disappeared.

—Because I knew if you found out, you would leave me.

The entire auditorium went silent.

—So you let me believe they were gone?

Valeria’s eyes hardened.

—You chose me.

Santiago stepped back as if those words physically hurt him.

But Valeria wasn’t finished.

—And don’t pretend you are innocent. You wanted a new life. You wanted to forget Elena. You wanted a family that looked perfect.

The cameras captured every second.

The powerful businessman who controlled companies and newspapers stood there unable to defend himself.

Then the competition director opened the folder again.

—There is one more document.

She handed it to Santiago.

His hands trembled as he read.

It was an old medical report.

From thirteen years ago.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because at the bottom was a signature.

A signature he recognized.

His own family doctor.

And beside it was a handwritten note:

“Patient Elena Ríos and unborn twins were healthy. Information regarding their condition was intentionally altered.”

Santiago looked up slowly.

—Someone changed my medical reports.

Nobody spoke.

But everyone knew.

The lie that destroyed thirteen years of their lives had just begun to fall apart.

And when Santiago discovered who had ordered the falsification…

The person responsible was the last person he expected.
