PART 2: THE DAY ADRIAN HAYES LOST THE WOMAN WHO ALWAYS FORGAVE HIM

Adrian thought I was angry.

That was his first mistake.

He thought this was another argument.

Another moment when I would cry, wait, and eventually forgive him.

Because for twelve years, that was what I did.

I forgave every apology.

Every promise.

Every woman who disappeared after he swore she meant nothing.

But this time was different.

This time, I wasn’t trying to save our marriage.

I was preparing to leave it.

The next morning, Adrian returned home.

He expected to find me waiting.

Instead, he found my suitcase near the door.

His expression changed.

—Are you seriously doing this?

I looked at him calmly.

—Yes.

He laughed softly.

Not because he was happy.

Because he still didn’t believe me.

—Claire, don’t be dramatic.

That sentence.

After twelve years.

After three affairs.

After abandoning me emotionally while I carried our second child.

He still called my pain drama.

I looked at him.

—Do you remember the first time you cheated?

His face changed slightly.

—Why are you bringing up the past?

—Because you never did.

Silence.

—You apologized because you were afraid of losing me.

I walked toward the table and placed the divorce documents there.

—Not because you understood what you did.

Adrian stared at the papers.

—You already prepared this?

I nodded.

—The night you left.

For the first time, panic appeared in his eyes.

—You were serious?

I almost smiled.

—You thought I wasn’t?

He looked away.

That was the problem.

Adrian had always believed my love was unlimited.

Like a bank account he could keep withdrawing from without ever depositing anything.

Then his phone rang.

Serena.

He immediately rejected the call.

I noticed.

And strangely…

I felt nothing.

No jealousy.

No anger.

Nothing.

That was when I knew I was truly done.

—You’re not even going to ask who she was?

He looked at me.

—No.

A pause.

—Why?

I answered honestly.

—Because after twelve years, I finally know the answer.

The room became silent.

Adrian sat down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Just tired.

—Claire, I know I made mistakes.

I looked at him.

—No, Adrian.

—You made choices.

He lowered his eyes.

That sentence hurt because he knew it was true.

A mistake happens once.

A choice repeats itself.

Then he said something I never expected.

—My mother gave you money?

I nodded.

His expression changed.

—Why?

I looked at him.

—Because she knows her son better than anyone.

That angered him.

—You went to my mother behind my back?

I laughed quietly.

—Your mother sent me money because she knew I needed a way out.

—Your wife needed a way out from you.

He stood up.

—Don’t talk like I’m some monster.

I looked at him.

—Then stop acting like one.

The words stayed between us.

Heavy.

Final.

That afternoon, I went to my prenatal appointment.

Eleanor came with me.

She held my hand while the doctor checked the baby.

Everything was fine.

For the first time in weeks, I breathed.

Then the doctor smiled.

—Your baby is very active.

I looked at the screen.

A tiny heartbeat.

A tiny life.

And I realized something.

For years, I had been afraid.

Afraid of leaving.

Afraid of raising children alone.

Afraid of starting over.

But this little baby didn’t need a perfect family.

He needed a mother who was happy.

A mother who respected herself.

When we left the hospital, Eleanor stopped me.

—Claire.

I turned.

She looked emotional.

—There is something you need to know.

I frowned.

—What?

She took a deep breath.

—The money I gave you wasn’t just because I wanted you to leave Adrian.

I waited.

—It was because I discovered something about Serena.

My expression changed.

—What?

Eleanor looked around before lowering her voice.

—She didn’t come back because she still loved my son.

A pause.

—She came back because she knew something.

My heart tightened.

—What kind of thing?

Eleanor looked at me seriously.

—Something that could destroy the Hayes family.

That night, Adrian returned home early.

For the first time in years, he looked nervous.

He found me packing the last of my things.

—Claire.

I didn’t answer.

—We need to talk.

I continued folding baby clothes.

—About what?

He hesitated.

Then said:

—About Serena.

My hands stopped.

Not because I cared.

Because I knew.

Something had happened.

—What about her?

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

—She lied to me.

I turned slowly.

The man who defended her without questioning.

The man who chose her side.

Was finally discovering the truth.

—What did she lie about?

He took out his phone.

There was a message.

A document.

A photo.

Something that made his face completely pale.

—Claire…

His voice shook.

—The reason Serena came back…

A pause.

—It wasn’t because of me.

I looked at him.

Then at the phone.

And what I saw explained everything.

Because the woman Adrian had sacrificed twelve years of marriage for…

Was hiding the biggest secret of his life.

And this time…

I was not the woman waiting to forgive him.

I was the woman who already knew how to walk away.
