PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE BABY.

Connor stared at Kenneth Boyd as if the man had appeared from nowhere.

But I knew better.

Kenneth did not appear.

He arrived when the truth was ready to be revealed.

The hallway remained silent.

Families waiting for appointments, nurses checking charts, and doctors passing by all seemed frozen in place.

Connor forced a laugh.

“Attorney Boyd? What are you doing here?”

Kenneth didn’t answer him immediately.

Instead, he walked toward me and handed me the sealed folder.

“Dr. Sinclair, everything you requested has been verified.”

Connor’s expression changed.

Requested?

Verified?

Those words were not supposed to exist in his world.

He looked at me.

“What is this?”

I held the folder but didn’t open it.

“Something you should have told me a long time ago.”

Melinda’s hands started shaking.

“Connor…”

He turned toward her.

“What did he mean?”

She looked away.

That was when I knew.

The woman who had spent years pretending to be my friend had finally run out of lies.

Connor stepped closer.

“Kirsten, if this is some kind of revenge—”

I interrupted him.

“Revenge?”

I looked at the stroller.

“At a one-year-old child?”

My voice softened.

“No. The baby did nothing wrong.”

That was the difference between us.

Connor wanted pain.

I wanted the truth.

Kenneth opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Financial records.

And one DNA report.

Connor saw the first page.

His confident expression disappeared.

“What is this?”

Kenneth calmly replied.

“Evidence that the story you have been telling everyone for the last year is incomplete.”

Melinda closed her eyes.

“Please…”

Connor looked at her.

“Please what?”

The baby started crying softly.

The sound broke the tension for a moment.

Melinda immediately picked him up.

And that tiny movement made something clear.

She wasn’t afraid because of me.

She was afraid because Connor was about to discover what she had hidden from him.

“You told me this was my son,” Connor whispered.

Melinda’s lips trembled.

“It is complicated.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“I asked you a simple question.”

The entire hallway watched.

The man who had proudly introduced his new family minutes earlier was now standing in front of everyone, realizing the foundation beneath him was cracking.

I remembered the day Connor left.

The day he packed his things and told me he wanted a woman who could give him the family he deserved.

He never once asked how much those words destroyed me.

He never wondered how many nights I sat alone blaming myself.

He only wanted a replacement.

A new beginning.

A picture-perfect life.

But perfect pictures often hide ugly truths.

Kenneth turned another page.

“Connor, your divorce agreement included several statements regarding infertility, emotional distress, and the reason for the breakdown of the marriage.”

Connor looked at him.

“So?”

Kenneth looked directly into his eyes.

“So those statements may have been based on false information.”

The color drained from Connor’s face.

Melinda whispered.

“Kirsten…”

I looked at her.

The woman who once knew every secret I had.

The woman I trusted enough to stand beside me during the hardest years of my marriage.

“How long?” I asked quietly.

She didn’t answer.

“How long did you know?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Since before the divorce.”

Connor froze.

“What?”

Melinda covered her mouth.

“I was going to tell you.”

“No.”

Connor stepped back.

“You knew?”

The baby bottle that had fallen earlier was still lying broken on the floor.

Nobody moved to clean it.

Because everyone understood.

That bottle wasn’t the thing that shattered.

Their entire story had.

Kenneth handed me another document.

“The original fertility records were obtained yesterday.”

I looked at Connor.

“The problem was never me.”

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked like the person I had spent seven years loving.

Confused.

Lost.

Human.

But it was too late.

Because while he was celebrating the family he thought he had built, he never realized he had destroyed the only person who had truly stood beside him.

Then Kenneth leaned closer and lowered his voice.

“There’s one more thing.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He glanced toward Connor and Melinda.

“The child’s records contain a second name listed as emergency contact.”

My heart stopped for a second.

Because I recognized the name.

And Connor hadn’t seen it yet.

Kenneth handed me the final page.

When I read it, I finally understood why Melinda had been terrified the moment she saw him.

Because the biggest secret was not about the baby.

It was about the person who had been hiding behind Connor’s back the entire time.
