PART 2: THE DAY JULIAN REALIZED I WAS REALLY GONE

Julian stared at the resignation email on my phone.

For the first time in seven years, he looked genuinely confused.

As if he had never imagined that I could walk away.

—Emma… what are you doing?

I looked at him calmly.

—Leaving.

His eyebrows tightened.

—Because of what happened today?

I almost smiled.

Because even now, he still didn’t understand.

It was never about the crab noodles.

It was about every small moment that told me where I stood in his life.

Every time he lowered his voice when talking to me because someone might hear.

Every time he avoided standing too close to me in the hallway.

Every time he introduced Serena with pride while pretending I was just another employee.

Seven years of being loved in secret had slowly turned into seven years of being hidden.

—You think I’m quitting because of a bowl of noodles? —I asked.

Julian didn’t answer.

I continued.

—I’m quitting because I finally realized I was the only one trying to protect this relationship.

His expression changed.

—Emma, that’s unfair.

—Unfair?

I looked at him.

—Do you remember the day I interviewed here?

His face froze slightly.

Of course he remembered.

That was the day everything started.

—You told me you couldn’t hire me because you didn’t want rumors.

I laughed softly.

—But then Serena got the position.

Julian frowned.

—That’s different. She was more suitable at that time.

I nodded.

—Maybe.

I didn’t argue.

Because after all these years, I finally understood something.

The truth didn’t need to be forced.

People always revealed their choices.

And Julian had chosen.

Again and again.

That afternoon, the entire company knew I had resigned.

Some people were surprised.

Others whispered that I had finally given up trying to get close to Director Hayes.

I packed my belongings quietly.

A small box.

A few notebooks.

The old coffee cup I had used every morning for five years.

Nobody knew that cup was a gift from Julian.

Nobody knew that years ago, before we became a secret, he had stayed late at the office just to help me finish a difficult project.

Nobody knew there had been a time when he looked at me like I was the only person in the world.

But that version of Julian disappeared slowly.

And I was tired of waiting for him to come back.

When I walked past Serena’s desk, she smiled.

—Emma, are you really leaving?

I stopped.

—Yes.

She tilted her head.

—Because of today?

I looked at her.

For years, I had called her my best friend.

The person who knew everything about my relationship with Julian.

The person who knew exactly how much I had sacrificed.

Yet she still sat beside him at meetings, accepted his attention, and pretended not to notice how everyone misunderstood the situation.

—No, Serena.

I picked up my bag.

—Because of seven years.

Her smile disappeared.

That night, Julian came to my apartment.

I wasn’t surprised.

He stood outside my door, still wearing the expensive suit from work.

But for the first time, he looked exhausted.

—Why didn’t you tell me you were this unhappy?

I opened the door slightly.

—Would you have listened?

He became silent.

That answer hurt him because he knew it was true.

—Emma, I know I made mistakes.

I looked at him.

—You keep calling them mistakes.

He lowered his eyes.

—What should I call them?

I answered quietly.

—Choices.

The word hit harder than anger.

Because mistakes happened accidentally.

Choices showed what someone truly valued.

Julian took a step closer.

—What do you want me to do?

I looked at him for a long time.

Seven years ago, I would have answered immediately.

I would have asked him to choose me.

To tell everyone about us.

To hold my hand in public.

But now…

I didn’t want those things anymore.

Because love that had to be begged for was already broken.

—I don’t want anything.

His face changed.

—Nothing?

I shook my head.

—I wanted you to notice without me asking.

The silence between us became unbearable.

Then Julian’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

It was Serena.

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

Even now.

Even standing at my door.

Even knowing he was losing me.

Part of him was still afraid to ignore her.

I smiled sadly.

—Answer it.

Julian looked at me.

—Emma…

—Go ahead.

He didn’t move.

For a second, I thought maybe he would finally choose differently.

But then the phone rang again.

And he picked it up.

That was when I closed the door.

The next morning, I received an unexpected message.

Not from Julian.

From the company’s legal department.

They wanted to meet me immediately.

I thought it was about my resignation.

But when I entered the conference room, the lawyer placed a folder in front of me.

Inside were documents I had never seen before.

My eyes stopped on one page.

My name.

My project.

My original design.

And below it…

Serena’s signature.

I looked up.

The lawyer’s expression was serious.

—Miss Jiang, we discovered something during an internal review.

My hands tightened around the papers.

—What kind of something?

He took a deep breath.

—The promotion decision made last year may have been based on stolen work.

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The reason Serena always seemed one step ahead.

The reason Julian always defended her.

The reason my efforts disappeared while hers were praised.

But there was something else.

A final document was attached.

A document with Julian’s approval signature.

And the date was from three years ago.

The same year he told me he couldn’t hire me because of “company rules.”

I stared at his signature.

And for the first time…

I wondered if Julian hadn’t just ignored my pain.

Maybe he had known the truth all along.

And he had chosen to stay silent.
