PART 2: THE MAN WHO TURNED MY BROKEN HEART INTO A NEW BEGINNING

I stared at Nathan Cross.

For a moment, I thought I had heard wrong.

“Marry you?”

The words sounded impossible.

Nathan had always been Henry Grant’s greatest rival.

Two people who stood on opposite sides of every competition.

Henry was discipline, rules, and perfection.

Nathan was instinct, courage, and a refusal to bow to anyone.

They had fought over promotions, research projects, and even military recognition.

And now…

He was asking me to marry him.

I wiped away my tears.

“Nathan, I appreciate what you did for my mother. But I can’t accept something like this because I am desperate.”

His expression didn’t change.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He looked at the hospital corridor.

At the doctors walking quickly.

At the families waiting anxiously outside operating rooms.

Then he looked back at me.

“Because Henry forgot something important.”

“What?”

“That a marriage certificate is not what makes someone a husband.”

His voice was calm.

“Actions do.”

My heart tightened.

Because those words were exactly what I had been waiting years to hear from Henry.

But they never came from him.

Nathan explained everything clearly.

It wasn’t about revenge.

It wasn’t about humiliating Henry.

It was about giving me a way out.

With my mother’s surgery approaching, Henry could use our shared assets against me if I filed for divorce immediately.

The house.

The savings.

The investments.

Everything was tied together.

But if I became Nathan’s legal wife, I would have protection.

And more importantly…

I would no longer be the woman everyone saw as Henry Grant’s abandoned fiancée.

I looked at him.

“You planned all this?”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I just know what it’s like when someone thinks they can decide your worth.”

For the first time that night, I saw something hidden behind his cold military image.

Pain.

The next morning, my mother’s surgery began.

Professor Chen arrived personally.

The hospital staff who had been worried about payment suddenly treated my mother’s case with the highest priority.

I sat outside the operating room.

Nathan sat beside me.

He didn’t speak too much.

He didn’t make empty promises.

He simply stayed.

After six hours, the doctor finally came out.

“Mrs. Mitchell is stable.”

My legs almost gave out.

I covered my face and cried.

This time, they weren’t tears of fear.

They were tears of relief.

Nathan quietly handed me a tissue.

“You should sleep.”

I shook my head.

“I can’t.”

“You haven’t slept in two days.”

“I need to know she’s okay.”

Nathan looked at me for a few seconds.

Then he said softly:

“Emma, you don’t have to prove you are strong every second.”

That sentence broke my defenses.

Because Henry always praised my patience.

My understanding.

My ability to endure.

But Nathan…

He saw how tired I was.

Three days later, Henry finally appeared.

He walked into the hospital wearing his military uniform.

Perfect.

Calm.

Like nothing had happened.

Until he saw Nathan standing beside me.

His expression changed.

“Cross?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Grant.”

The atmosphere instantly became cold.

Henry’s eyes moved toward me.

“Emma, what is he doing here?”

I looked at him.

“He saved my mother.”

Henry froze.

“I could have helped.”

I smiled faintly.

“No.”

His face darkened.

“Emma.”

“You couldn’t.”

The silence was painful.

Because both of us knew why.

Henry had spent years saying he loved me.

But when the most important moment came…

He chose someone else.

Then Henry noticed the ring on my finger.

His eyes widened.

“What is that?”

I looked down.

A simple ring.

Nothing extravagant.

Nothing designed to show wealth.

But it represented a choice.

“My engagement ring?”

His voice became colder.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“My wedding ring.”

For the first time, Henry Grant lost control of his expression.

“What did you say?”

Nathan stepped forward.

“Emma and I registered our marriage this morning.”

Henry stared at me.

Like he was waiting for me to laugh.

To say it was a joke.

But I didn’t.

“You married him?”

“Yes.”

“After everything between us?”

I looked at him calmly.

“Henry, you said marriage was just a piece of paper.”

His face turned pale.

I continued:

“So I found someone who understands that the person holding that paper matters.”

That evening, Henry confronted Olivia.

For years, he had convinced himself he was only helping her.

That he was only being kind.

But when he finally looked at everything clearly…

He realized every choice had consequences.

The savings.

The house.

The postponed weddings.

The promises broken.

He had sacrificed his future with me for someone who never asked him to sacrifice anything.

Meanwhile, the woman he abandoned was walking away.

Not because she found another man.

But because she finally found herself.

A month later, my mother’s health improved.

My divorce from Henry was officially completed.

The military investigation into the misuse of shared assets also began.

Henry lost the reputation of being the perfect man.

Because everyone finally saw the truth.

A person could be brilliant.

Successful.

Respected.

And still fail the person who loved them most.

As for Nathan…

He never tried to replace my past.

He never asked me to forget Henry.

He only gave me space to build a future.

One evening, while we stood outside my mother’s house, Nathan asked:

“Do you regret it?”

I looked at him.

“Regret what?”

“Changing your entire life.”

I smiled.

Then I looked at the sky.

“No.”

Because for the first time in years…

I wasn’t waiting for someone to choose me.

I had already chosen myself.

And that was the moment Henry Grant finally understood:

He didn’t lose me when Nathan married me.

He lost me on the ninth day he failed to show up.
