PART 2: THE DAY ALEXANDER REALIZED HE HAD LOST ME

Alexander stood in the doorway holding the glass strawberry keychain.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The man who had once been the center of my world was standing there looking lost.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Lost.

And somehow, that hurt more than his cruelty ever had.

“Why is this in the trash?” he asked again.

I looked at him calmly.

Because that was the one thing he never expected from me.

Calm.

For years, Alexander knew exactly how to handle my emotions.

If I cried, he ignored me.

If I argued, he called me dramatic.

If I asked questions, he told me I was insecure.

But now?

There was nothing for him to fight against.

“I threw it away because it wasn’t mine anymore.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?”

I looked at the keychain in his hand.

“The first time I saw that strawberry, I thought it was special.”

I paused.

“Because I made it special.”

His expression changed slightly.

“I spent hours choosing every detail. I wanted something small that reminded you of us.”

I smiled faintly.

“But apparently, I wasn’t the only woman who received that reminder.”

“Isabella…”

“No.”

I interrupted him softly.

Not angrily.

Not bitterly.

Just tired.

“I spent three years trying to prove I was worth choosing.”

The room became quiet.

“I changed my schedule for you. I gave up opportunities because you needed support. I waited for dinners that never happened. I defended you when people whispered about your late nights and your mysterious meetings.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“And every time I felt something was wrong, you made me believe I was the problem.”

Alexander lowered his gaze.

For the first time, he had no immediate response.

“I was depressed, Alexander.”

My voice became quieter.

“Do you know what the worst part was?”

He looked at me.

“I wasn’t depressed because my life was difficult.”

I swallowed.

“I was depressed because I felt completely alone while being married.”

Those words hit him.

I could see it.

But I was no longer waiting for him to understand.

That version of me was gone.

He stepped closer.

“Isabella, I know I made mistakes.”

Mistakes.

That word almost made me laugh.

“You call it mistakes?”

He stopped.

“You didn’t forget an anniversary. You didn’t accidentally hurt my feelings.”

I pointed toward the door.

“You made me feel like I was competing with everyone else for the attention of my own husband.”

Alexander’s face changed.

Then he noticed the papers on the bed.

The divorce documents.

His eyes froze.

“What is that?”

I didn’t answer.

He walked closer and picked them up.

The color drained from his face.

“You filed for divorce?”

“Yes.”

The word came out so easily.

And that seemed to shock him more than anything.

“You didn’t even tell me?”

I looked at him.

“When would you have listened?”

Silence.

A painful, honest silence.

Then his phone rang.

The name on the screen appeared.

Sophie.

He immediately turned it over.

But I saw it.

And so did he.

A few months ago, that small action would have destroyed me.

Tonight, it meant nothing.

“You should answer.”

His eyes moved back to me.

“No.”

I smiled slightly.

“Why?”

He didn’t respond.

Because he finally knew.

Because suddenly, he was the one afraid.

“I need to explain.”

“No, Alexander.”

I shook my head.

“You need to explain because you don’t want to lose something.”

He stared at me.

“But when you had me, you didn’t think I was worth explaining things to.”

The room felt heavy.

Then something unexpected happened.

Alexander sat down.

Not as a CEO.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as the powerful man everyone feared.

Just as a tired husband who had finally realized the person beside him was disappearing.

“I thought you would always be there.”

I looked away.

“That was your biggest mistake.”

He covered his face with his hands.

“I thought giving you things meant I was showing love.”

I glanced at the keys to the rooftop studio sitting on the table.

A beautiful gift.

A meaningless apology.

“You gave me things because it was easier than giving me yourself.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Is there anything I can do?”

I looked at him.

And strangely, I didn’t feel angry anymore.

I just felt empty.

“No.”

His eyes lifted.

“No?”

“No.”

I took my phone and pressed the button.

The divorce papers were officially sent.

A small notification appeared.

Sent successfully.

Alexander saw it.

And something inside him broke.

Because for the first time in three years…

He understood.

This wasn’t a threat.

This wasn’t another argument.

This wasn’t me trying to make him jealous.

I had already left.

I had left long before I walked away.

The next morning, something happened that shocked the entire Whitmore family.

Alexander canceled his meetings.

He canceled interviews.

He canceled a billion-dollar negotiation.

Everyone thought it was because of the company.

But the truth was different.

For the first time in his life, Alexander Whitmore was fighting for something money could not buy back.

The woman who had loved him when he had nothing.

The woman who had stood beside him before he became powerful.

The woman who no longer needed him.

And when he finally arrived at my apartment with a truth he had been hiding for years, I realized the story between us was far from over.

Because Alexander had one last secret.

And this time…

It wasn’t about Sophie.

It was about the reason he had pushed me away in the first place.
