PART 2: THE SECRET I HID BEFORE WALKING AWAY FROM ADRIAN

Adrian stood in front of the fire, staring at the ashes of the diary that once held every piece of my heart.

For a long time, he said nothing.

The man who could negotiate billion-dollar contracts, who could control an entire room with a single look, was standing there completely speechless.

Because for the first time, he was seeing something he never expected.

Not my anger.

Not my jealousy.

Not my tears.

My goodbye.

“Clara…”

His voice was different.

Almost uncertain.

I looked at him calmly.

“What?”

His eyes moved toward the burning pages.

“Why would you burn that?”

I smiled slightly.

“You already knew what was inside.”

His expression changed.

Because he did know.

He remembered the day he found my diary years ago.

He remembered laughing softly when he saw how much I loved him.

At the time, I thought that moment was embarrassing.

I thought he was laughing because he found my feelings too obvious.

But now I realized something.

He wasn’t laughing because he loved me.

He was laughing because he knew he was loved.

And he never thought he could lose it.

“I never asked you to stop loving me,” Adrian whispered.

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

“You just made sure I had to.”

The room became silent.

Outside, rain began tapping against the windows.

For years, I had waited for this moment.

For him to finally ask why I changed.

For him to finally notice that the woman who used to run toward him had stopped moving.

But now that he was standing in front of me…

I felt nothing.

That scared him more than anger ever could.

“You’re leaving.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was a realization.

I lowered my eyes.

“Yes.”

His face tightened.

“Because of Evelyn?”

I almost laughed.

“No, Adrian.”

I touched my stomach unconsciously.

“Evelyn was never the reason.”

His eyes followed my movement.

And for the first time that night, he noticed.

The loose clothes.

The strange eating habits.

The way I avoided the dress.

The way I protected my body.

His expression changed.

“Clara…”

I didn’t answer.

His voice became softer.

“Are you sick?”

I looked away.

“No.”

Then silence.

A terrible silence.

Because he was smart.

Too smart.

And slowly, he understood.

His face lost all color.

“You’re pregnant.”

I didn’t deny it.

Adrian took a step backward.

Like the words physically hit him.

“How long?”

“Almost two months.”

His eyes widened.

“Two months?”

I nodded.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

I looked at him.

“Would it have changed anything?”

That question destroyed him.

Because he knew the answer.

Two months.

Two months carrying his child while believing she was preparing to leave him.

Two months going to hospital appointments alone.

Two months hearing him say another woman’s name with the same lips that once promised forever.

“Clara, why?”

His voice cracked.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I stared at him.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

I paused.

“Of becoming like my mother.”

He looked confused.

“My mother stayed in a marriage where she was not loved because she thought a child would fix everything.”

I touched my stomach.

“I promised myself I would never bring a child into a home where one person had to beg to be chosen.”

Adrian looked devastated.

For the first time, he wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t explaining.

He was listening.

“I thought you would always be there.”

Those words came out quietly.

And somehow, they were the cruelest words he had ever said.

Because that was exactly the problem.

He thought I would always be there.

So he stopped trying.

“I was there,” I whispered.

“Every day.”

My eyes became wet.

“But you only noticed when I stopped.”

Adrian walked closer.

“Clara, I made mistakes.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He stopped.

“Don’t call them mistakes.”

My voice remained calm.

“Mistakes happen once.”

I looked at him.

“You made choices.”

That sentence left him silent.

Then his phone rang.

The screen lit up.

Evelyn.

He stared at the name.

Then slowly turned the phone off.

I noticed.

But I didn’t feel satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Because a few months ago, that small action would have meant everything to me.

Now it meant nothing.

“Tell me what I can do,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Nothing.”

His face changed.

“Clara…”

“I spent years asking you to choose me.”

I picked up the divorce papers from the table.

“Now I’m choosing myself.”

Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.

The butler entered hesitantly.

“Sir…”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

The butler looked uncomfortable.

“Miss Moore is downstairs.”

Adrian froze.

“She says she needs to speak with you.”

For a moment, I thought he would leave.

The old Adrian would have.

The man who always ran toward Evelyn.

But he didn’t move.

Instead, he looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Real regret.

“Tell her I’m not available.”

The butler left.

I looked at him.

“You don’t have to pretend.”

“I’m not pretending.”

His voice was low.

“I finally understand.”

I said nothing.

Because understanding was not the same as repairing.

The next morning, the entire Blackwood family received shocking news.

Adrian canceled his engagement rumors with Evelyn.

He stepped away from several public appearances.

And for the first time in years, the powerful CEO of Blackwood Corporation disappeared from the spotlight.

Everyone wondered why.

But nobody knew the truth.

The man who had everything had finally realized the one thing he couldn’t buy back.

The love of the woman who had already decided to leave.

And when Adrian found out the real reason Evelyn had returned after all these years…

He discovered that the woman he had sacrificed his marriage for had been hiding a secret of her own.
