PART 2: THE NIGHT ALEXANDER RETURNED AS A FATHER.

Alexander remained on his knees beside Sofia.

For years, I had remembered him as the man who walked away.

The man who chose pride over family.

The man who disappeared when our marriage ended and convinced himself that distance was easier than facing his mistakes.

But seeing him now…

Seeing him look at our daughter’s injuries…

I saw something I had almost forgotten.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Who did this to you?” Alexander whispered.

Sofia’s lips trembled.

“Dad…”

She looked afraid.

Not of him.

Of everything that would happen next.

Alexander noticed.

His expression became colder.

“Who made you afraid to tell me?”

Nobody answered.

But he already knew.

He stood slowly.

The same man who had arrived wearing a wrinkled shirt now looked completely different.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

“Elena.”

I looked at him.

“Call your lawyer.”

I nodded.

“I already did.”

That surprised him.

“You knew this would happen?”

I looked at Sofia.

“No.”

My voice became quiet.

“But I knew I would never let my daughter suffer the way I did.”

For a moment, we just looked at each other.

Because we both remembered.

Our marriage.

His mother’s constant criticism.

The way I was always told to be more patient.

More understanding.

More forgiving.

I had spent years shrinking myself to keep peace.

And now my daughter was standing at the beginning of the same nightmare.

But this time, she would not face it alone.

Thirty minutes later, my apartment was filled with people.

A lawyer.

A doctor.

A private investigator Alexander had called before he even took off his coat.

Sofia sat wrapped in a blanket while the doctor carefully documented every injury.

When the doctor finished, his expression was serious.

“These injuries are consistent with repeated physical assault.”

Alexander closed his eyes for a second.

The words hurt him.

But they also confirmed what he already knew.

Someone had hurt his child.

Someone had believed they could get away with it.

Then Alexander’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?” I asked.

He turned the phone around.

Javier.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Alexander answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Then Javier’s nervous voice came through.

“Mr. Brooks, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”

Alexander’s eyes hardened.

“A misunderstanding?”

“Yes. Sofia became emotional. My mother was only trying to teach her how to be part of our family.”

My hands tightened.

Teach her?

That was what they called it?

Alexander looked at Sofia.

Then back at the phone.

“Your mother brought six women into a locked hotel room on my daughter’s wedding night.”

Javier immediately became defensive.

“I wasn’t there.”

Sofia looked up.

That sentence broke something.

Because he wasn’t denying it.

He was only denying responsibility.

Alexander noticed too.

“You were outside the door.”

Another silence.

Javier stopped speaking.

Alexander’s voice dropped.

“You heard her screaming.”

No answer.

“You knew.”

Still nothing.

Then Alexander said something that made the entire room freeze.

“You have ten minutes to tell your mother to surrender every document related to my daughter’s condo.”

Javier laughed nervously.

“Or what?”

Alexander’s expression didn’t change.

“Or tomorrow morning, every person involved in what happened tonight will have their names attached to a criminal investigation.”

The call ended.

Sofia stared at her father.

“Dad…”

Alexander turned toward her.

“I’m sorry.”

Two simple words.

But they carried years of regret.

“I should have been there.”

Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I needed you.”

Alexander looked down.

“I know.”

The room became quiet.

Because sometimes apologies cannot erase the past.

But sometimes they are the first honest thing someone says in years.

The next morning, Carmen Robles arrived at the police station wearing the same confidence she had worn when she entered the hotel room.

She believed money and reputation could protect her.

She believed Sofia was just a young woman who could be pressured into silence.

She was wrong.

Because waiting for her was not just a frightened bride.

It was Sofia’s parents.

A legal team.

Medical evidence.

Security footage from the hotel.

And a man who had spent decades building powerful connections but had never used them until someone hurt his child.

When Carmen saw Alexander standing there, her expression changed.

“You.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Yes.”

She forced a smile.

“This is a family matter.”

Alexander’s face remained cold.

“No.”

He glanced at the file in his hand.

“This stopped being a family matter the moment you decided my daughter’s body was the price of owning her property.”

Carmen’s confidence disappeared.

But she still had one weapon.

A secret.

A secret about Javier.

A secret she believed would protect her family.

And when Alexander discovered what Carmen had been hiding about her son’s finances…

He realized the attack on Sofia was never only about the condo.

The condo was just the beginning.
