PART 2: THE SECRET MY GRANDMOTHER HID FOR YEARS.

The highway stretched endlessly in front of us.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

I kept both hands on the steering wheel, trying to process everything Grandma had just told me.

My parents.

My father.

The person I had trusted my entire life.

They hadn’t taken her to lunch.

They had taken her to a facility.

And they left her there.

Alone.

Grandma sat beside me calmly, holding the envelope with my grandfather’s handwriting.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t angry.

That somehow made it worse.

“Grandma,” I finally said.

“Yes?”

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

She looked out the window.

“Because I wanted to know if your father still had a conscience.”

My chest tightened.

“And?”

She was silent.

Then she answered.

“I have my answer.”

Those words hurt.

Because I knew what my father meant to her.

She wasn’t just his mother.

She was the woman who raised him.

The woman who worked extra jobs so he could go to college.

The woman who stayed awake when he was sick.

And he had repaid her by trying to remove her from her own life.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the county courthouse.

Grandma walked through the entrance carrying her handbag like she had done it a thousand times before.

She didn’t look like someone who had just been abandoned.

She looked like someone who had finally decided to fight.

At the records office, she placed the envelope on the counter.

“I need to verify ownership of a property.”

The clerk opened the file.

A few minutes later, she looked up.

“Mrs. Eleanor Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“The deed is still under your name.”

Grandma nodded.

“I thought so.”

I exhaled.

“So they didn’t get the house?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“But they tried.”

The clerk printed several documents.

As we read through them, something caught my attention.

A recent request.

A power of attorney authorization.

My father had attempted to use his temporary authority to prepare a property transfer.

My stomach turned.

“He was going to sell your house?”

Grandma folded the paper carefully.

“Not sell.”

I looked at her.

“What then?”

“Transfer.”

“To who?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because the next document revealed the name.

My mother.

I felt sick.

They weren’t just taking money.

They were planning to move the house into my mother’s name.

The house my grandfather built.

The house Grandma had lived in for forty years.

The house where my father grew up.

“They wanted everything,” I whispered.

Grandma nodded.

“They thought I was old enough to control.”

Her voice became quiet.

“But not old enough to understand.”

After leaving the courthouse, we went to the bank.

The manager recognized Grandma immediately.

When she saw the withdrawals, her expression changed.

“Mrs. Mercer, we have been trying to contact you.”

Grandma frowned.

“Why?”

The manager hesitated.

“Because there were unusual transactions.”

I looked at Grandma.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

The manager pulled out another file.

“There’s something else.”

She placed a document on the desk.

“This was submitted last week.”

Grandma picked it up.

Her face changed for the first time.

Not fear.

Shock.

“What is it?” I asked.

She handed it to me.

It was a request to change the beneficiary information on her accounts.

The person requesting the change?

My father.

The person approving it?

My mother.

The room became silent.

“They were preparing for after I was gone,” Grandma whispered.

I felt anger rising.

“They thought you wouldn’t notice.”

Grandma looked at me.

“No.”

She corrected softly.

“They thought nobody would care enough to ask.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because maybe that was what hurt her most.

Not the money.

Not the house.

Being forgotten.

After leaving the bank, Grandma pointed toward the road.

“The last place.”

I started the car.

“Where are we going?”

She looked ahead.

“To the house.”

When we arrived, I immediately knew something was wrong.

The front door was unlocked.

Grandma always locked that door.

Always.

I stepped forward.

“Stay behind me.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice was firm.

“This is my home.”

Inside, everything looked normal at first.

Then we entered the study.

Drawers were open.

Documents were scattered everywhere.

Someone had searched the room.

Grandma walked slowly toward the desk.

Then she stopped.

Because sitting in the center of the table was a photograph.

A picture of my father and mother.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

Grandma picked it up.

Her hands remained steady.

But her face changed.

“What does it say?” I asked.

She handed it to me.

Only one sentence was written:

“Once she is placed somewhere safe, the house will finally be ours.”

I stared at the words.

The anger I felt was overwhelming.

But Grandma did something unexpected.

She smiled.

Not because she was happy.

Because she finally had proof.

“They made one mistake,” she said.

“What?”

“They forgot something.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She opened her handbag and pulled out a small recording device.

My eyes widened.

“Grandma?”

She looked at me.

“I knew they were trying something.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

She pressed a button.

And suddenly, my father’s voice filled the room.

The recording was from a conversation I had never heard.

And in those few seconds, he revealed the one thing that could destroy everything he had planned.

Because my father hadn’t just abandoned his mother.

He had admitted exactly why he wanted her out of the house.
