The night before the surgery, To Van Tinh did not sleep.
She sat on the edge of the old sofa, holding the ultrasound picture in her hands.
Three tiny shadows.
Three lives that had quietly appeared in her world after the man she loved had already walked away.
She had imagined becoming a mother many times.
But never like this.
Never alone.
Never with a hospital appointment hidden inside her phone instead of a celebration with her husband.
At three in the morning, she opened her contacts.
Tran The Kiet’s name was still there.
She stared at it for a long time.
Her finger hovered over the call button.
Just one call.
Maybe he would answer.
Maybe he would be surprised.
Maybe he would come.
Maybe…
She suddenly laughed at herself.
Maybe was the word that had destroyed her marriage.
Maybe he would understand.
Maybe he would change.
Maybe if she tried harder, loved more, endured longer, he would finally see her.
But three years had already given her the answer.
She deleted his contact.
The next morning, she arrived at the hospital early.
The sky was gray, and a light rain covered the streets.
She carried only a small bag.
No family.
No husband.
No one waiting outside the operating room.
At the registration desk, the nurse checked her information.
“To Van Tinh?”
“Yes.”
The nurse looked at the file.
Then she looked at her stomach.
“You came alone?”
Van Tinh smiled.
“Yes.”
The nurse hesitated.
“Do you need someone to sign the documents with you?”
“No.”
Her voice was calm.
“I can do it myself.”
She sat in the waiting area after completing the procedures.
Around her were couples.
A husband holding a wife’s hand.
A mother excitedly showing baby clothes.
A father recording the ultrasound results with a smile.
Everyone seemed to have someone.
Everyone except her.
She lowered her head.
She told herself she was prepared.
She had already decided.
She would not look back.
She would not regret.
Until the nurse called her name.
“Miss To, please come inside.”
She stood up.
Her legs felt heavy.
But before she could enter the preparation room, a familiar voice suddenly came from behind.
“Van Tinh.”
Her entire body froze.
She knew that voice.
A voice she had heard every morning for three years.
A voice that once said:
“I will take care of you forever.”
Slowly, she turned around.
Tran The Kiet was standing there.
His hair was slightly messy.
His face was pale.
He looked like he had rushed here without stopping.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then his eyes moved down.
To her medical documents.
To the hospital bracelet around her wrist.
Then back to her face.
“What are you doing here?”
Van Tinh looked at him coldly.
The question almost made her laugh.
“What do you think?”
His expression changed.
“Van Tinh…”
She stepped back.
“Don’t call me like that.”
His eyes trembled.
“What happened?”
“What happened?”
She repeated his words softly.
“Four months ago, you signed the divorce papers.”
His lips moved.
“But…”
“No.”
She interrupted.
“You already chose.”
The hallway became silent.
Kiet looked at the documents in her hand.
Then suddenly, he noticed the ultrasound report.
His face changed.
“Three…”
His voice was barely audible.
“Three babies?”

Van Tinh didn’t answer.
But her silence confirmed everything.
For the first time in many months, she saw panic in his eyes.
“Are they mine?”
That question hurt more than anything.
She looked at him.
“Tran The Kiet.”
Her voice was quiet.
“Do you really need to ask?”
He immediately regretted it.
“I didn’t mean…”
“You did.”
She smiled bitterly.
“Because in your heart, you already believed I was someone who could disappear from your life without leaving anything behind.”
Kiet took a step forward.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She looked at him.
“Would you have stayed?”
He couldn’t answer.
Because both of them knew.
During the divorce, he had been the one who said:
“I hope you find someone better.”
He had said it calmly.
As if three years of marriage could end with one sentence.
Van Tinh held the ultrasound tightly.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want my children to become a reason you were forced to come back.”
His eyes turned red.
“They are my children too.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“They are.”
For a moment, hope appeared in his eyes.
But then she continued.
“That doesn’t mean we are still husband and wife.”
The hope disappeared.
The nurse came out.
“Miss To, it’s time.”
Van Tinh turned around.
Kiet grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t go.”
She stopped.
Not because she wanted to.
Because after hearing those words, a part of her still remembered the old Kiet.
The man who used to wait for her downstairs in the rain.
The man who promised he would never let her cry.
But memories were dangerous.
Because they only showed the person someone used to be.
Not the person standing in front of her now.
She slowly removed his hand.
“Tran The Kiet.”
“I waited for you for three years.”
“Today, don’t ask me to wait again.”
She walked toward the operating room.
Kiet stood frozen in the hallway.
Then his phone rang.
He looked down.
It was his mother, Wang Que Lan.
He answered.
Before he could speak, her anxious voice came through.
“Where are you?”
He didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the closed operating room door.
Then his mother continued:
“Don’t tell me you went to see Van Tinh.”
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Then Wang Que Lan whispered:
“She can’t have that child.”
Kiet’s expression changed.
“What did you say?”
And for the first time, he realized…
The divorce he thought was the end of their story…
was actually the beginning of a much bigger secret.
