PART 2: THE MILLION DOLLAR SECRET HE NEVER DESERVED

Daniel didn’t call me that day.

Not because he didn’t want to.

Because he didn’t know what to say.

For the first time in three years, he was facing a version of me he had never imagined.

A woman who could leave.

A woman who didn’t need his approval.

A woman whose value was never measured by the number written on her paycheck.

But I knew Daniel.

His silence would not last.

People like him never apologized when they lost someone.

They apologized when they lost what that person provided.

And I was right.

That afternoon, my phone lit up.

Twenty-seven missed calls.

From Daniel.

From his mother.

From relatives who had never contacted me unless there was a wedding, a holiday, or a problem.

I ignored them all.

Instead, I sat in my empty apartment and looked around.

The wedding dress hanging in the closet.

The invitations stacked on the table.

The flowers that would never be delivered.

A future that disappeared in one night.

Strangely, I wasn’t crying.

Because the person I was mourning wasn’t Daniel.

It was the woman I had been when I loved him.

The woman who thought patience could fix arrogance.

The woman who believed if she worked harder, loved deeper, and gave more, someone would finally appreciate her.

I wasn’t losing a husband.

I was losing an illusion.

The next morning, Daniel came to my house.

I knew it was him before opening the door.

Because he still knocked the same way.

Three times.

Pause.

Two more times.

A habit I used to find cute.

Now it only reminded me how well I knew someone who never truly knew me.

When I opened the door, he looked different.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Desperate.

“Elena.”

I didn’t invite him inside.

“What do you want?”

He swallowed.

“I want to talk.”

“About what?”

His eyes moved toward the apartment.

“About us.”

I almost smiled.

“Daniel, there is no us.”

His expression tightened.

“Don’t say that.”

“Why?”

“Because we were together for three years.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Three years where I supported you.”

“Three years where I stood beside you.”

“Three years where I thought I was building a life with you.”

I looked directly at him.

“And three years where you secretly thought I wasn’t good enough.”

He immediately shook his head.

“No. I was wrong.”

Those words surprised me.

But not enough.

“You’re sorry because you hurt me?”

He remained silent.

I waited.

Then I asked again.

“Or are you sorry because you found out I wasn’t the person you thought I was?”

His face changed.

That was my answer.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I was stressed.”

“My friends…”

I interrupted him.

“Your friends didn’t make you say those things.”

“No.”

“Your friends didn’t make you compare me to my sister.”

“No.”

“Your friends didn’t make you look at the woman who loved you and tell her she embarrassed you.”

He had nothing to say.

Because every excuse ended at the same place.

His own choice.

Then he whispered:

“I didn’t know about the money.”

I looked at him.

There it was.

The real reason.

Not me.

Not our relationship.

The money.

“The money has nothing to do with this.”

He looked shocked.

“Nothing?”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“Daniel, if my salary was eight thousand forever, I would still deserve respect.”

“If I earned eight hundred, I would still deserve love.”

“If I earned nothing, I would still be a person.”

His eyes turned red.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“But you did.”

Silence.

Then he said the sentence I expected.

“Can we start over?”

I looked at him for a long time.

Three years ago, hearing those words would have made me happy.

Today, they only made me tired.

“Daniel.”

“Do you know what I wanted to tell you last night?”

He looked at me.

“I wanted to tell you my parents gave me a gift.”

“I wanted to tell you we could buy a bigger house.”

“I wanted to tell you that your dreams mattered to me.”

His face became pale.

“Elena…”

“But before I could share good news with you, you showed me exactly how you saw me.”

I closed the door halfway.

“The worst part isn’t that you almost lost $2.8 million.”

“The worst part is that you lost the person who would have shared it with you.”

That night, Daniel finally told his family the wedding was canceled.

His mother blamed me.

His relatives called me selfish.

They said I had humiliated him.

But none of them mentioned the five words that ended everything.

“You make me look ridiculous.”

Because everyone knew.

A woman could forgive many things.

But she would never forget the moment she realized the person beside her was ashamed of her.

One month later, I moved into a new apartment.

I invested the money my parents gave me.

I started a design company.

For the first time, my success belonged only to me.

Six months later, I received an invitation.

Daniel was getting married.

To someone else.

I looked at the photo.

His new fiancée came from a wealthy family.

She earned more than him.

She had the career his friends admired.

I closed the invitation and smiled.

Because I finally understood.

Daniel never wanted a partner.

He wanted someone who made him look successful.

And I was never supposed to be that person.

I was supposed to be someone who knew her own worth.

And the day Daniel realized he had lost me…

was the day I finally found myself.
