PART 2: THE DAY MARCUS HALE LOST THE WOMAN HE THOUGHT WOULD NEVER LEAVE

I walked away.

That was the first thing Marcus Hale never believed I could do.

For two years, he had watched me stay.

He watched me return every gift.

Reject every apology.

Refuse every attempt to make our marriage look normal.

But he never truly believed I would leave.

Because in his mind, I was still the woman who loved him more than herself.

The woman who had protected him.

The woman who had sacrificed everything.

He forgot one important thing.

Even the strongest person has a limit.

That night, I did not look back.

Not when Vivian cried.

Not when Marcus ran toward her.

Not when he shouted my name.

I sat in the taxi with my suitcase beside me and watched the rain cover the window.

For the first time in two years…

I felt like I could breathe.

The next morning, the news spread quickly.

Everyone expected me to fight.

Everyone expected Elena Hale to create another scene.

After all, that was the story Marcus had allowed people to believe.

The unstable wife.

The violent woman.

The person who couldn’t control her emotions.

Nobody knew what happened before that day.

Nobody knew what he had done.

And I decided something.

I would no longer waste my life proving my pain to people who had already chosen not to see it.

My lawyer arrived at my apartment before noon.

“Are you sure about the agreement?”

I looked at the document.

Marcus would keep everything.

The houses.

The investments.

The company shares.

The family fortune.

Everything.

My lawyer frowned.

“Elena, you understand you could fight for compensation.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“After everything he did?”

I looked at my right hand.

The hand that once filled concert halls with music.

The hand that would never be the same again.

“I don’t want anything that connects me to him.”

My lawyer was silent.

Then he nodded.

Because he understood.

I wasn’t leaving because I had lost.

I was leaving because I had finally won something more important.

Myself.

Three months later, Marcus called me for the first time.

I almost didn’t recognize his voice.

The confidence was gone.

The arrogance disappeared.

“Elena.”

I said nothing.

“I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

A long pause.

“About us.”

I almost smiled.

Us.

That word sounded strange coming from him.

“Marcus, there is no us anymore.”

His breathing changed.

“You can’t just erase ten years.”

“No.”

I looked out the window.

“I can’t erase ten years.”

“I can only stop letting those ten years destroy the rest of my life.”

He became quiet.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Vivian lost the baby.”

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I felt sadness.

Not for him.

Not for Vivian.

For the child who never had a chance.

“I’m sorry.”

Marcus swallowed.

“That’s all?”

“What else do you want me to say?”

“I lost everything.”

I almost laughed.

Because only then did he understand.

He thought losing Vivian’s child meant losing his future.

He never realized he had already lost the person who stood beside him for years.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“You didn’t lose everything.”

“You lost me.”

The line went silent.

Six months later, I returned to the stage.

Not as Elena Hale.

Not as someone’s wife.

Just Elena.

My first performance after my injury was in a small theater.

Nothing compared to the places where I had performed before.

But when I sat at the piano…

My hands trembled.

For a second, memories came back.

The pain.

The hospital.

The humiliation.

The night Marcus destroyed the thing I loved most.

Then I played.

Slowly.

One note.

Then another.

And when the final sound disappeared, the entire room stood up.

I cried.

Not because I was broken.

Because I finally understood.

Marcus had tried to take my identity.

But he failed.

A year later, I saw him again.

At a charity event.

Marcus looked different.

Older.

Tired.

He approached me carefully.

“Elena.”

I turned.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at my hand.

The same hand he had destroyed.

“You can really live without me.”

It wasn’t a question anymore.

It was a realization.

I smiled slightly.

“Yes.”

His eyes lowered.

“I thought you needed me.”

I shook my head.

“No, Marcus.”

“You needed me.”

He looked at me.

And for the first time, he understood.

The company.

The reputation.

The perfect image.

All of it had survived because someone believed in him.

Someone protected him.

Someone loved him.

But that person was gone.

I walked past him.

No anger.

No hatred.

No desire for revenge.

Just peace.

Because the greatest punishment wasn’t seeing Marcus regret losing me.

The greatest punishment was knowing…

I had finally stopped caring whether he regretted it or not.
