PART 2: THE HOMELESS GIRL WHO KNEW MY DAUGHTER’S SECRET.

I stared at the paper sticking out of the girl’s backpack.

The school crest.

My daughter’s school.

And beneath it…

A name.

“Emily Carter.”

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that name.

Not from the streets.

Not from the school.

From somewhere much closer.

Emily was the daughter of my late wife’s closest friend.

A girl who disappeared from our lives three years earlier.

The official story was simple.

Her mother lost custody.

The family moved away.

Nobody talked about it again.

But standing there, watching this teenage girl holding a torn backpack and wearing clothes that looked too thin for the winter, I realized something.

The story I had been told was incomplete.

“Emily?”

The girl’s face changed.

She looked at me like I had just uncovered something she desperately wanted to hide.

Sophie looked between us.

“Dad, you know her?”

Emily immediately shook her head.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

I looked at her.

Then at the paper.

“Why do you have my daughter’s school documents?”

Her hands tightened around the backpack.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

She looked away.

For a moment, I saw something familiar in her eyes.

The same fear I had seen in Sophie after losing her mother.

A child trying to survive something she couldn’t explain.

Sophie stepped closer to her.

“Emily helps me every day.”

I frowned.

“Every day?”

She nodded.

“She waits outside the school.”

“Why?”

Sophie looked confused.

“Because she wants to make sure I’m okay.”

That sentence bothered me.

Not because Emily was helping my daughter.

Because nobody had told me.

Not the school.

Not the teachers.

Not the counselors I paid thousands of dollars to consult.

Nobody.

“Emily.”

She looked at me cautiously.

“Can we talk?”

She immediately shook her head.

“I need to leave.”

Before she could move, Sophie grabbed her sleeve.

“Don’t go.”

The teenage girl’s expression softened.

And that was when I noticed something.

The way she looked at Sophie wasn’t like a stranger.

It was like someone protecting family.

I brought them both to a nearby café.

Emily sat near the door.

Ready to leave at any moment.

Sophie sat beside her, happily explaining a math problem they had solved together.

I watched my daughter.

Really watched her.

For months, every doctor told me the same thing.

“She needs time.”

“Grief affects children differently.”

“Don’t pressure her.”

But nobody asked what she needed.

Nobody asked what made her feel safe.

Emily did.

A homeless teenager with nothing…

Had somehow given my daughter something I couldn’t buy.

A reason to smile.

Finally, I looked at Emily.

“Tell me the truth.”

She stayed quiet.

Then she slowly pulled a folded paper from her backpack.

It was old.

Carefully preserved.

A school record.

“I used to go to Sophie’s school.”

I froze.

“Why did you leave?”

Emily looked down.

“Because someone wanted me gone.”

The café suddenly felt silent.

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The school board.”

My expression changed.

“Why?”

She looked toward Sophie.

“Because I found something.”

“What?”

Emily took a deep breath.

“Your wife.”

My entire body froze.

“My wife died two years ago.”

“I know.”

Her voice became softer.

“That’s why I waited.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Emily looked at me.

“Your wife was the only person who believed me.”

The world seemed to slow down.

“My wife knew you?”

Emily nodded.

“She was helping me.”

“Helping you with what?”

Emily looked around before lowering her voice.

“With the truth about what happened at the school.”

That night, after Sophie fell asleep, I searched through old files.

For the first time in two years, I opened the boxes I had avoided.

My wife’s belongings.

Her notebooks.

Her emails.

Her private documents.

And then I found something.

A folder hidden inside her old laptop.

The title was simple:

“Emily Carter.”

My hands went cold.

Inside were dozens of documents.

School reports.

Messages.

Financial records.

My wife had been investigating something.

Something involving the school.

Something involving students who disappeared from the system.

Then I found her final note.

The one she wrote days before the accident that took her life.

Daniel,

If something happens to me, don’t trust the first story they tell you.

Emily is telling the truth.

Protect her.

Protect Sophie.

I stopped breathing.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

My wife’s death.

Emily disappearing.

Sophie becoming silent.

The school.

Someone had been hiding something.

And my wife had gotten too close.

The next morning, I went back to the school.

This time, I didn’t arrive as a parent.

I arrived as someone demanding answers.

The principal immediately changed expression when he saw Emily beside me.

“You know her?”

I looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

“And I want to know why a former student of yours is sleeping on the streets.”

The principal became nervous.

“That situation is complicated.”

“No.”

I placed the documents on his desk.

“It’s simple.”

“You erased her.”

Silence.

Then he said something that confirmed my worst fear.

“Mr. Harrison, you don’t understand what you’re getting involved in.”

I leaned forward.

“Then explain it.”

He looked toward the door.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your wife should have stopped investigating.”

My heart tightened.

“What did you say?”

He realized his mistake too late.

I stood up.

“Tell me everything.”

But before he could answer…

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Daniel Harrison.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

“You should stop asking questions about Emily Carter.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?”

A short laugh came through.

“Ask your daughter.”

I looked toward Sophie.

She was standing in the hallway.

Holding something.

Something she had found inside her mother’s old things.

A photograph.

And on the back of it…

Was a message written by my wife.

A message that changed everything:

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means they failed to stop me.”

I turned the photo over.

The final sentence made my blood run cold.

“Your daughter was the next person they planned to take.”
