PART 2: THE SON I LOST AND THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK

I couldn’t answer.

The little boy was still looking at me.

Those eyes.

Those exact eyes.

Five years ago, I imagined them countless times.

Would my child have Ethan’s face?

Would he inherit his cold expression?

Would he know that somewhere in this world there was a woman who had carried him for nine months?

I had prepared myself for everything.

Except this.

Except standing in front of him while he asked me a question no mother should ever have to hear.

“So… can I call you mom?”

My fingers tightened around the door.

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to kneel down and hold him.

I wanted to tell him that I had waited five years for this moment.

But I couldn’t move.

Because behind him stood Ethan Caldwell.

The man who had allowed his family to take my child away.

The man who disappeared from my life without leaving me even a chance to say goodbye.

I looked at him.

“What is this?”

Ethan’s expression remained calm.

But his eyes were different.

Less cold.

More tired.

“Liam has been asking questions.”

I looked at the boy.

“Liam.”

Just saying his name felt strange.

Like touching a memory that belonged to someone else.

Ethan continued.

“He knows something is missing.”

I laughed softly.

“Something?”

My voice trembled.

“His mother is not something, Ethan.”

The atmosphere changed.

For the first time since seeing him again, Ethan looked away.

“I know.”

Those two words surprised me.

Because five years ago, he never admitted anything.

He was always silent.

Always distant.

Always acting like the agreement between us was nothing more than a business transaction.

“You knew where I was.”

It wasn’t a question.

Ethan remained silent.

That silence was enough.

“You knew.”

I stepped back.

“For five years, you knew how to find me.”

“I did.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

His jaw tightened.

Because there was no easy answer.

Finally, he said:

“Because my mother told me you wanted nothing to do with him.”

I froze.

“What?”

Ethan looked at Liam.

Then back at me.

“She told me after the birth that you signed the agreement and accepted the money. She said you chose to leave.”

My heart felt like it had been crushed.

“I never said that.”

“I know that now.”

“Now?”

My voice became colder.

“After five years?”

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

“I was sick.”

I almost laughed.

“You were sick?”

I looked at him.

“And what was I?”

“You think I wasn’t scared?”

“You think giving birth and watching someone take my baby away didn’t hurt?”

Liam looked between us silently.

He didn’t understand everything.

But he understood the sadness.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“I made mistakes.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You made choices.”

The words stayed between us.

Because they were true.

People always called their actions mistakes when they regretted the consequences.

But choices were different.

Choices revealed who someone really was.

Suddenly, Liam reached out.

His small hand grabbed my sleeve.

“Are you angry because of me?”

My heart broke.

“No.”

I immediately knelt down.

“No, Liam.”

His eyes widened.

“Then why are you crying?”

Only then did I realize tears had fallen.

I quickly wiped them away.

“Because I waited a long time to meet you.”

He stared at me.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“Really.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

It was the first time I saw him smile.

And something inside me finally accepted the truth.

This child was not a contract.

Not an agreement.

Not a price.

He was my son.

Ethan watched silently.

And I could tell.

He saw it.

The connection he had taken away from me.

The next day, I went to work as usual.

I thought Ethan would avoid me.

But at ten in the morning, my assistant told me:

“Miss Harper, Mr. Caldwell wants to see you.”

I entered his office.

The same office where I first saw him again.

But this time, there was no business discussion.

Only a document on the table.

I looked down.

A custody agreement.

My expression changed.

“What is this?”

Ethan answered:

“Liam will stay with you three days a week.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because he needs his mother.”

I almost smiled.

“You finally understand that?”

His face showed pain.

“Yes.”

“Too late.”

He accepted that.

Without arguing.

That surprised me more than anything.

Five years ago, Ethan Caldwell was a man who controlled everything.

His company.

His family.

His future.

But now…

He looked like someone who had lost something important.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

I remained silent.

“I don’t even know if I deserve to ask.”

He paused.

“But I want Liam to know the truth.”

I looked at him.

“What truth?”

“That his mother didn’t abandon him.”

My eyes became wet.

Because those were the words I had waited five years to hear.

Not for myself.

For my son.

That night, Liam slept in my apartment for the first time.

He held a small stuffed animal and looked around my home.

“This is where you live?”

“Yes.”

“Can I come here again?”

I smiled.

“Whenever you want.”

He thought for a moment.

Then asked:

“Did you keep my things?”

My heart stopped.

“What things?”

“Things from when I was a baby.”

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t have anything.

The Caldwell family took everything.

The clothes.

The photos.

The hospital records.

Everything except my memories.

I whispered:

“No.”

Liam looked disappointed.

Then he said:

“It’s okay.”

“I don’t remember those things anyway.”

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because he had forgotten the years I lost.

The nights I cried.

The child I never got to hold.

But I made a promise silently.

I couldn’t change the past.

But I could protect his future.

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Mrs. Caldwell came to my apartment.

The woman who had once handed me a contract instead of compassion.

The woman who had treated my child like an heir.

She looked older now.

Tired.

But still proud.

“I need to talk to you.”

I opened the door wider.

“About what?”

She looked at me.

“About Liam.”

I waited.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Someone is trying to take control of the Caldwell family.”

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Her expression became serious.

“Because five years ago, the child I thought would save this family…”

She paused.

“May be the reason this family loses everything.”

And for the first time…

I realized Liam’s return was not only about a mother and son finding each other.

There was a secret hidden behind his birth.

A secret even Ethan didn’t know.

And Mrs. Caldwell had come to me because she needed the one person she had tried hardest to erase.

Me.
