PART 2: THE WIFE WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

The first thing I heard was silence.

Not peace.

Not comfort.

A silence filled with fear.

I opened my eyes.

But I was no longer in the operating room.

I was standing in the hallway.

My body was still inside that room.

My hands were cold.

My heart no longer beat.

Yet I could see everything.

The doctors fighting for me.

The nurses lowering their heads.

The small blanket they placed over my son.

My son.

The child Alejandro asked about every night when he thought I wasn’t listening.

The child he abandoned without hesitation.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask him why.

Why did he choose another woman?

Why did he save a scratch instead of his wife and his unborn child?

But my voice no longer existed.

Then I saw Alejandro walk out of Isabel’s room.

He looked like a completely different person.

The confidence was gone.

The cold expression disappeared.

For the first time in years, he looked like a man who had lost control.

“Where is Camila?”

The doctor looked at him.

“General Rivas…”

Alejandro grabbed his arm.

“Where is my wife?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Because everyone already knew.

Finally, the chief surgeon spoke.

“She passed away.”

Alejandro froze.

“No.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that’s impossible.”

The doctor looked at him with disappointment.

“She needed the blood you authorized us to give to someone else.”

Alejandro’s face turned pale.

“I thought…”

He stopped.

Because there was no excuse.

Not anymore.

He knew exactly what he had done.

The doctor continued:

“Your wife was carrying your child.”

That sentence destroyed him.

For the first time, I saw tears in Alejandro’s eyes.

But I felt nothing.

Because those tears came after.

After the choice.

After the decision.

After he had already taken everything from me.

A nurse approached him.

“General, there is another problem.”

Alejandro looked up.

“What?”

She handed him a folder.

“Before surgery, Mrs. Camila left a medical authorization document.”

His hands trembled as he opened it.

I knew what it was.

Before every high-risk pregnancy appointment, I had prepared emergency documents.

Not because I expected betrayal.

Because I was responsible.

The nurse continued:

“She requested that if anything happened to her, all medical records, recordings, and personal files be delivered to her lawyer.”

Alejandro stopped breathing.

My lawyer.

The person I contacted two weeks before the dinner.

Because even before the shooting…

I had noticed things.

The way Isabel looked at my pregnancy.

The way Alejandro defended her.

The way he always found reasons to forgive her.

I had hoped I was wrong.

I wasn’t.

The next morning, Alejandro received the first package.

Inside was a copy of every message between him and Isabel.

Every conversation.

Every meeting.

Every time he told her:

“I owe you everything.”

Every time she replied:

“Then prove it.”

But there was something else.

A recording.

A conversation from three days before the dinner.

Isabel’s voice filled the room.

“She is pregnant again.”

Alejandro answered:

“I know.”

“Then why are you still with her?”

Silence.

Then Alejandro said:

“Camila is my wife.”

Isabel laughed softly.

“But you don’t love her.”

Another silence.

Then:

“I don’t know.”

I watched his face collapse.

Because sometimes the truth hurts more when it comes from your own mouth.

But the recording wasn’t finished.

Isabel spoke again.

“After what happened to my husband, you promised you would take care of me forever.”

Alejandro replied:

“I promised.”

“Then make a choice.”

The recording ended.

Alejandro sat there for a long time.

And finally understood.

The woman he sacrificed his family for…

Had never loved him.

She loved what he represented.

His power.

His protection.

His guilt.

That afternoon, Isabel was taken away for questioning.

The investigation started immediately.

The waiver Alejandro forced my hand to sign became evidence.

The medical records became evidence.

The blood authorization became evidence.

Everything he thought he controlled became the proof that destroyed him.

Weeks later, Alejandro stood alone in the empty house.

My plants were still on the balcony.

My books were still on the shelf.

The baby clothes I had bought were still inside the closet.

He touched one small blue outfit.

And finally broke down.

But I was no longer there to comfort him.

No longer there to say:

“It wasn’t your fault.”

No longer there to forgive.

Because I had spent my entire marriage making sure Alejandro never had to face the consequences of his choices.

Until the day he chose someone else over me.

That was the day I stopped protecting him.

Months later, my lawyer opened my final letter.

The letter I wrote before the surgery.

The one Alejandro was never supposed to read.

It contained only one sentence:

“General Rivas, you spent your life saving strangers because you believed you owed them something.”

“But when the person who loved you most needed you…”

“You decided she was the sacrifice.”

“And that is the one decision you will have to live with forever.”

Alejandro read those words alone.

And for the first time…

The strongest man in the military region had nothing left to fight.

Because he had won every battle outside.

But he lost the only person who truly stood beside him.

Me.
