PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED SAVING THEM

The next morning, Megan arrived at the office like nothing had happened.

That was the first thing that surprised me.

No shame.

No apology.

No fear.

She walked through the glass doors wearing the same confident smile she always had.

The same smile she used when she convinced everyone she was the victim.

When she saw me sitting in my office, she immediately closed the door.

“Olivia, we need to talk.”

I continued reading the documents in front of me.

“About what?”

She took a deep breath.

“About last night.”

I looked up.

“Which part?”

Her face changed.

“Don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Act like you don’t know what happened.”

I smiled.

“No, Megan.”

“I know exactly what happened.”

She sat down across from me.

“It wasn’t what you think.”

That sentence.

The sentence every person used when they were caught.

I put the document down.

“Then explain it.”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation.

Only excuses.

“We made a mistake.”

I looked at her.

“We?”

Her eyes moved away.

That was enough.

For six years, I had defended Megan.

When partners criticized her work, I defended her.

When clients complained, I fixed her mistakes.

When she needed opportunities, I gave them to her.

And the entire time…

She was waiting for my life to become hers.

“I need you to understand something, Olivia.”

Her voice became softer.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I laughed quietly.

“That’s the problem.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“You didn’t care enough to realize you were hurting me.”

Silence.

Then she stood up.

“Are you really going to destroy my career because of Ryan?”

I looked at her.

“No.”

I pushed the folder toward her.

“I’m going to protect my career because of what you did.”

Her expression changed.

The confidence disappeared.

She opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the case documents.

The altered reports.

The suspicious billing records.

The unauthorized signatures.

Her hands started shaking.

“Where did you get these?”

I leaned back.

“I prepared this evidence three months ago.”

Three months.

Before the betrayal.

Before the hotel message.

Before I knew the truth.

Her face became pale.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

I looked at her.

“But I didn’t want to believe it.”

She swallowed.

“Olivia…”

“I was going to handle it privately.”

I closed the folder.

“I was going to protect you.”

That hurt her more than anger would have.

Because it was true.

I would have saved her.

Even after everything.

But then she chose to destroy me.

“You were my best friend.”

Her eyes became wet.

“I am your best friend.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were someone who knew exactly where my heart was…”

“And still decided to hurt me there.”

At that moment, my assistant knocked on the door.

“Olivia, Ryan is here.”

Megan froze.

I didn’t.

“Send him in.”

A few seconds later, Ryan entered.

He looked tired.

Like he had spent the entire night preparing an apology.

“Olivia.”

I didn’t answer.

He looked at Megan.

Then back at me.

“I know you’re angry.”

I almost smiled.

Angry.

That was what he thought.

Not betrayed.

Not disappointed.

Angry.

“I came to explain.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“I don’t need an explanation.”

“Then what do you want?”

I looked at him.

“The truth.”

His expression changed.

Because the truth was the one thing he couldn’t control.

“You loved her.”

He immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why did you hide her?”

Silence.

“Why did you remember everything about her but forget everything about me?”

“Why did you drive across the city for her but tell me to take a taxi in the rain?”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

Because every question had an answer he didn’t want to admit.

Then he said something that surprised me.

“I was confused.”

I nodded.

“That’s the difference between us.”

“What?”

“When I was confused, I protected you.”

“When you were confused, you destroyed me.”

He stepped closer.

“Olivia, five years can’t disappear overnight.”

I looked at him.

“You’re right.”

“Five years don’t disappear overnight.”

“They disappear one small betrayal at a time.”

The room became silent.

Then I placed another document on the table.

Ryan looked at it.

“What is this?”

“The termination of Megan’s contract.”

His face changed.

“You can’t.”

“I can.”

“And there’s more.”

I looked at Megan.

“The investigation report will be submitted today.”

Her eyes widened.

“You promised you would help me.”

I nodded.

“I did.”

“Until you stopped being someone I could help.”

Ryan looked at me.

“You are really doing this?”

I stood up.

“No.”

“I am not doing this.”

“I am simply no longer stopping the consequences from reaching you.”

That afternoon, the entire firm learned the truth.

Megan wasn’t the talented lawyer everyone believed she was.

She was someone who survived by standing behind someone else’s work.

And Ryan…

Ryan discovered that the woman he chose had never loved him the way I did.

She loved the life around him.

The protection.

The opportunities.

The image.

A month later, I received a message from Ryan.

“I lost everything.”

I stared at it.

Then deleted it.

Because I finally understood something.

I hadn’t lost Ryan.

I had lost the illusion that he was someone worth keeping.

The woman who walked away in the rain that night was not the same woman who entered the office six years earlier.

That woman needed her best friend.

That woman needed her boyfriend.

This woman only needed herself.

And when the biggest case of my career went to trial three months later…

The person sitting beside me wasn’t Ryan.

It wasn’t Megan.

It was me.

Because the life they tried to take from me…

Was the life I had built with my own hands.
