PART 2: THE WIFE WHO STOPPED WAITING

The lawyer’s words remained in Gabriel’s mind long after the call ended.

“He’s trying to get rid of you.”

For years, Gabriel had believed Emily would always be there.

No matter how late he came home.

No matter how many dinners he missed.

No matter how many times he chose work over her.

Emily always waited.

She always understood.

She always forgave.

That was why he never imagined the day she would simply stop.

Three days later, Gabriel received a package.

No sender.

Only his name.

Inside was a small box.

His mother’s wedding ring.

Gabriel froze.

It was the ring his mother had worn for more than forty years.

The ring Emily had removed from his mother’s hand after the funeral because his father asked her to keep it safe.

Beneath the ring was a letter.

Not long.

Not angry.

Just Emily’s handwriting.

“Gabriel,

I returned everything that belonged to the Cross family.

Except this.

Your mother gave it to me before she left.

She told me something I will never forget.

She said: ‘Emily, don’t waste your life waiting for someone who doesn’t realize he is being loved.’

I didn’t understand what she meant before.

Now I do.

I hope one day you understand too.

Emily.”

Gabriel sat in his office for a long time.

For the first time, he remembered all the moments he had ignored.

Emily waiting outside his company during storms because she wanted to surprise him.

Emily learning his mother’s medication schedule better than any doctor.

Emily canceling her own plans because his family needed her.

Emily standing alone at the hospital when his mother was sick.

And him…

Always him.

Too busy.

Too important.

Too convinced that love was something that would never disappear.

His phone rang.

It was Natalie.

He stared at the screen.

For weeks, he had chased the comfort she gave him.

The attention.

The admiration.

The feeling of being understood.

But now he suddenly realized something.

Natalie had only known the successful CEO.

The powerful man.

The man everyone wanted something from.

Emily had known the exhausted, angry, imperfect man behind everything.

And she still chose him.

Until she couldn’t anymore.

He answered.

“Natalie.”

Her voice immediately became soft.

“Gabriel, I heard about the divorce.”

Silence.

“I just wanted to say… maybe after everything settles down, we can…”

“No.”

The word came out before he could think.

Natalie stopped.

“What?”

“No.”

“Gabriel, I thought…”

“I know what you thought.”

His voice was tired.

“But I was wrong.”

A long silence followed.

Then Natalie asked:

“Was it because of Emily?”

Gabriel looked at the empty chair across from his desk.

The chair where Emily used to sit when she brought him lunch.

“Yes.”

“Because I finally understand what I lost.”

Natalie’s voice changed.

“Are you blaming me?”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“No.”

“I am blaming myself.”

That was the first honest thing he had said in a long time.

Two weeks later, Gabriel finally found Emily.

Not because someone told him.

Not because he forced anyone to reveal her location.

Because he stopped trying to control everything.

He found her in a small coastal town.

She was sitting in a quiet art studio.

Painting.

The same thing she had loved before marriage.

The dream she had abandoned while building his life.

When she saw him, she froze.

But she didn’t run.

She didn’t cry.

She simply looked at him.

“Why are you here?”

Gabriel stood there without his usual confidence.

Without his title.

Without his excuses.

“I wanted to apologize.”

Emily looked back at her painting.

“For what?”

The question hurt.

Because there were too many answers.

“For missing your calls.”

“For making you carry my family alone.”

“For making you believe you were less important than everyone else.”

“For choosing someone else when you were the person who never stopped choosing me.”

Emily was silent.

Then she said:

“Do you know what hurt the most?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Not Natalie.”

“Not the trip.”

“Not even the divorce.”

She turned around.

“The worst part was knowing that if my mother had not told you, if your father had not yelled at you, if everyone had not discovered the truth…”

“You would have continued.”

Gabriel couldn’t deny it.

Because she was right.

Emily continued:

“I spent years hoping you would notice my sacrifices.”

“But I realized something.”

“What?”

“I shouldn’t have to disappear for someone to finally see me.”

Those words hurt more than anger.

Because they were true.

Gabriel lowered his head.

“Is there any chance?”

Emily looked at him.

A long time passed.

Then she answered:

“I don’t know.”

Not yes.

Not no.

Just honesty.

And for the first time, Gabriel understood that he had no right to demand anything from her.

Not forgiveness.

Not another chance.

Not her love.

Months later, the divorce was finalized.

Emily kept her independence.

Her art.

Her peace.

Gabriel changed.

Not because he wanted Emily back.

But because he finally understood the kind of person he had become.

The man who had everything…

And still lost the one person who gave him something money could never buy.

A home.

Years later, Gabriel visited Emily’s first major exhibition.

One painting caught his attention.

A woman standing alone beside the ocean.

Not broken.

Not waiting.

Free.

The title was:

“The Day I Stopped Waiting.”

Gabriel stood there for a long time.

Because he finally understood.

Emily had not left because she stopped loving him.

She left because she finally started loving herself.
