PART 2: THE MOTHER WHO RETURNED WITH A STRONGER FUTURE

The voice on the other side of the phone was trembling.

“Mom… do you really not love me anymore?”

For a second, everything around me disappeared.

The traffic.

The noise.

The people walking past.

All I could hear was my son’s voice.

Leo.

My little boy.

The same child I had held in my arms when he was sick.

The same child whose first steps I had witnessed.

The same child I had chosen to leave behind temporarily because I believed it was the only way to protect him.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Leo…”

I wanted to tell him everything.

I wanted to tell him that I never abandoned him.

That I thought about him every second.

That every decision I made was because I loved him.

But then I heard another voice in the background.

“Leo, give me the phone.”

Nathan.

My heart immediately became cold.

He was listening.

He wanted to know what I would say.

He wanted to use my son’s pain against me.

So I swallowed everything I wanted to scream.

“Leo, listen to Mom.”

There was a small silence.

“Mom loves you more than anything.”

The child’s breathing became uneven.

“Then why did you choose money?”

That question hurt more than any insult Nathan had ever thrown at me.

Because I knew who had taught him those words.

I closed my eyes.

“Because sometimes adults have to make difficult choices.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I know.”

My voice softened.

“But one day you will.”

Before I could say more, Nathan took the phone.

“Are you satisfied now?”

His voice was full of arrogance.

“You got what you wanted. Money. A house. Freedom.”

I looked at the apartment contract in my hand.

The one he thought represented my greed.

“You still don’t understand anything, Nathan.”

He laughed.

“Understand what?”

I looked out the taxi window.

At the city moving past me.

At the life I was rebuilding.

“That I didn’t choose money over my son.”

A pause.

“I chose the ability to protect him.”

Nathan became silent.

Only for a moment.

Then he sneered.

“You actually believe you can come back?”

“Yes.”

“Leo is my son too.”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“Leo is not a possession.”

“He is a child.”

“And one day, he will know who fought for him.”

I hung up.

For the first time in ten years, I didn’t feel afraid of Nathan Cross.

That night, I moved into my new apartment.

It was empty.

No furniture.

No decorations.

No memories.

But it was mine.

I sat on the floor and opened my laptop.

The golden letters appeared again.

[Invest in Horizon Technology before midnight.]

[Three years later, it will become one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies.]

I stared at the message.

Then I smiled.

Maybe this strange ability was not a punishment.

Maybe it was the chance I had been given to rewrite my life.

The next morning, I made my first investment.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Every decision was calculated.

Every opportunity was carefully chosen.

Within weeks, people who once ignored me began searching for me.

The woman Nathan called useless.

The woman Margaret called greedy.

The woman they believed would collapse after divorce.

Was building something they couldn’t imagine.

Meanwhile, inside the Cross family mansion, Leo was changing.

Nathan noticed it first.

His son no longer asked when he would see his mother.

He stopped laughing.

Stopped sharing his drawings.

Stopped running toward him when he came home.

One night, Nathan found Leo sitting alone in his room.

“What are you doing?”

The boy quickly hid a piece of paper.

“Nothing.”

Nathan frowned.

He took the paper.

It was a drawing.

A small apartment.

A woman.

A child.

And underneath were three words.

“Mom’s new home.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

Because he suddenly realized something.

He had won the divorce.

But he was losing his son.

A few days later, Margaret came to his office.

“You need to stop her.”

Nathan looked up.

“Stop who?”

“That woman.”

“Your ex-wife.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

Margaret placed a newspaper on his desk.

On the front page was a picture of me.

The headline read:

“Former Mrs. Cross Invests Millions in Rising Technology Company.”

Nathan stared at the image.

Impossible.

The woman he thought would spend years struggling was standing beside investors and business leaders.

Confident.

Powerful.

Unrecognizable.

“She hid this from us?”

Margaret’s face turned pale.

“Not just this.”

She lowered her voice.

“Your father knew.”

Nathan froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“He knew who Elena Ortega really was before you married her.”

Silence filled the room.

Because suddenly Nathan remembered.

His father’s strange respect toward me.

The warnings.

The questions.

The way he once said:

“Don’t underestimate the woman who gives up everything quietly.”

At the time, Nathan thought it was meaningless.

Now he wasn’t so sure.

That night, Nathan opened the old divorce agreement again.

His eyes stopped at one sentence.

The custody clause.

The one he had forced me to accept.

The one he believed proved I didn’t care about Leo.

But below it was something he had ignored.

A legal condition.

A mother could regain custody if evidence showed emotional manipulation or parental alienation.

And suddenly Nathan understood.

The divorce wasn’t his victory.

It was his biggest mistake.

Because while he was celebrating taking my son away…

I had been preparing the future where Leo would choose the truth himself.

And the next morning, Nathan Cross received a message that made his entire world collapse.

It was from my lawyer.

Only one sentence:

“Mrs. Cross requests a formal review of custody arrangements.”

For the first time since our divorce…

Nathan felt afraid.

Because he finally realized something.

The woman who walked away with nothing…

had never lost.

She had only been waiting.
