PART 2: THE ACCOUNTS THAT BROKE HIS PERFECT ESCAPE.

Daniel called seven seconds after reading my message.

I let the phone ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Only when the call reached the fourth attempt did I answer.

“Audrey.”

His voice was different.

No longer confident.

No longer amused.

“What did you do?”

I looked out the window of our bedroom.

The same bedroom where, only hours earlier, he believed he had defeated me.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You froze the accounts.”

A small silence followed.

Then he laughed.

But it was forced.

“Audrey, don’t make this dramatic.”

I almost smiled.

That was always Daniel’s favorite sentence.

Whenever he was caught.

Whenever he was wrong.

Whenever he needed me to doubt myself.

He called it drama.

“You took money from accounts you weren’t authorized to touch.”

His breathing changed.

“You don’t understand what happened.”

“No?”

I opened the folder on my desk.

Inside were copies of every transaction.

Every transfer.

Every fake authorization.

Every payment connected to Chloe Ruiz.

“I understand perfectly.”

Silence.

Then his voice became softer.

“You investigated me?”

“No.”

I looked at the documents.

“I protected myself.”

For years, Daniel thought I was the quiet wife who trusted blindly.

He never understood that my silence was not ignorance.

It was observation.

“You can’t do this.”

His voice became angry.

“The company is mine too.”

I corrected him calmly.

“No, Daniel.”

“Sterling Global belongs to the shareholders.”

“And sixty-eight percent of the voting rights belong to me.”

Another silence.

This time longer.

Because he finally remembered.

The bracelet.

The shares.

My mother’s legacy.

The things he dismissed because they came from a woman he thought was too emotional to understand business.

“Audrey…”

His tone changed.

“Let’s talk.”

“We can fix this.”

I looked at the wedding photo on the dresser.

The woman in that picture still believed she had married someone who loved her.

“I already fixed it.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means the board meeting is scheduled for this afternoon.”

His breathing stopped.

“The board?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your actions triggered a full internal investigation.”

I heard him swallow.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I paused.

“You planned this.”

“You just never imagined I would be prepared.”

That was the difference between us.

Daniel prepared a way to escape.

I prepared a way to survive.

After the call ended, I sat quietly for several minutes.

Not because I was sad.

Because I was finally accepting the truth.

The man I loved had spent months building a new life while standing inside the one I had helped create.

He wasn’t leaving because he found happiness.

He was leaving because he thought he could steal everything and walk away.

But he forgot one thing.

The person he underestimated was the person who knew exactly how to bring him down.

At 9:00 AM, the board meeting began.

Daniel arrived with Chloe.

He still tried to look confident.

A man who believed he could explain his way out of anything.

Until the first document appeared on the screen.

Unauthorized transfer.

Then another.

Then another.

The room became silent.

One board member looked at Daniel.

“Can you explain why company funds were redirected to a personal account connected to Chloe Ruiz?”

Chloe immediately stepped forward.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

Her smile disappeared.

“This is fraud.”

Daniel stared at me.

Not with anger anymore.

With disbelief.

Because he finally understood.

The woman he thought he had left powerless…

was the person sitting at the head of the table.

Then the final document appeared.

The one Daniel never knew existed.

A hidden audit report my mother had created years before she retired.

A report designed to detect exactly this type of betrayal.

The room went completely silent.

Because the report showed something even worse.

Daniel’s plan had started long before that night.

He hadn’t just stolen from me.

He had been preparing to remove me from my own company.

And someone inside Sterling Global had been helping him.

I looked at the name on the document.

My hands tightened.

Because I knew that person.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside me for years.

Daniel smiled faintly when he saw my expression.

Because he thought he had finally found my weakness.

He was wrong.

The truth wasn’t going to destroy me.

It was going to destroy everyone who thought I would never fight back.

And the person who betrayed me was about to learn the most painful lesson of all:

Never mistake someone’s kindness for weakness.
